Windows Security Upgrade Set for Launch
Service Pack 2 for XP is almost ready to come out. I meet this service pack with a combination of dread and relief. On the one hand it's actually some physical proof that Micro$oft has started to take seriously the fact that it's one of the most insecure software packages on the planet. But my concern is that it's another 3E strategies (embrace, extend, exterminate) that they are famous for. For example, the Micro$oft firewall, I've never been able to take the notion seriously. Mainly because it's Micro$oft, the idea of them doing anything with security is laughable at best. Personally I use a shareware firewall ZoneAlarm, that's how little faith I have in Micro$oft's ability to do anything correctly. I worry that this release with all it's hype is going to be an excuse for Micro$oft to stifle their competition even more by having their firewall react negatively to competitors software. McAffee does something similar with their product, it coughs on ZoneAlarm restricting it's access and then almost demands that you install their firewall product immediately. I declined because I don't trust them either. Why does an anti-virus company think they can do a firewall anyway? I would rather depend on one that is free and updated regularly than the standard corporate worldview of we'll fix it when we fix it and you'll pay us either way.
