In Our Front Yard
Ok, I don't really know where to begin with this one but bear with me because here it goes! This morning Jamison, Alexis and I all left the house around the same time. He headed off to work and Alexis and I headed off to the grocery store to pick up a few last minute items. I put Alexis into her car seat from the passenger side of the back seat and headed around the back of the car toward the driver's door. When I got to the back of the car I noticed a flyer rolled up in a plastic bag behind one of my tires. I picked it up and it said "Missing" but when I realized it had something in it (rock salt perhaps? I'm not sure and these days you can't trust anything!) I dropped it on the ground and got in my car. I wiped my hands off with a baby wipe and called Jamison to see if he could explain to me why there would be rock salt inside the brochure or if he had an idea what else it might be. As I was backing out of the driveway I noticed that there was another flyer laying right in front of our Kerry/Edwards sign and from what I could see of it it said something like "Too White" or "Too" something or other. I didn't get out of the car to actually look at it so I couldn't tell for sure. I told Jamison about that one and hung up.
As Alexis and I drove to the grocery store it dawned on me that the other flyer had been lying right underneath my Anti-Bush bumper stickers. And I started to worry a bit so I called Jamison back and he said to look at the other one and not touch it when I got home and then call him and we would figure out what to do from there. So when we got back from the grocery store I went over to the other flyer and kicked it with my foot and could see that it said "Too White To Be Hate Crime Victims" and I really freaked out! I called Jamison back and we decided I should call the police department. So I unloaded the car, put the groceries away, got Alexis some Just Peas and popped in Blues Clues so I could run upstairs and look up the number for the police department. The number had been disconnected! Disconnected? Why the hell would you disconnect the police department's phone? And why wouldn't you provide another number? I mean this was hardly a 911 emergency so I wasn't about to call that! So I called Jamison and told him I couldn't deal with it right now since I needed to go back downstairs with Alexis. So he took over.
He ended up calling the County Commissioner's office and they told him "Yes we know, it happened all over the county last night. There is nothing we can do about it." Nothing you can do about it? Hate literature is being thrown onto my front lawn and there is nothing you can do about it?!!!!???!? "It's private property, yadda, yadda, yadda!" I really hate it when bad people bend the rules so that it suits them. Freedom of speech is all so lovely right up to the point where people like these barbarians use it to disparage others and spread their hate just because they are different than they are!
So when Alexis went down for her nap I did a little research online and found the not so lovely group that is responsible for this drivel. And it turns out they have an "office" just up the road in Baltimore. I won't name them by name because I'm not promoting a group of complete idiot racists even though I am dissing them. As they say "there's no such thing as bad publicity" and in someone's warped mind out there that might surf on in from God knows where they might find their message ok even though obviously it's not! But needless to say they are a nationally funded and organized hate group whose evilness has been noted by even the Southern Poverty Law Center. Some even characterize this "organization" of hatemongers as terrorists.
So what to do? There is nothing we really can do unless they destroy our property which really stinks! I do know this: we were the only house on the street who got the nasty literature dumped onto our front yard and we are the only house on the street who still have up political signs. I don't think it had to do with the fact it was Kerry per se since this hate group's website is down on all politicians, both Democratic and Republican alike, but I do think this motivated our house being picked. I'm not taking down my sign and I'm not taking my bumper stickers off my car either. They make a statement and I'm not going to be intimidated by a bunch of racist idiots!
Oh the world we brought Alexis into. Ignorance abounds and that is very sad indeed.

That is horrible! I'm being to think that humanity has lost grasp of the concept of "Self-Control," which includes the notion of not forcing ones opinion on another.

Since it was a group effort, are the police expecting trouble? Surely, the patriot act covers terrorism in this country, and this is a form of terrorism.

They don't expect any trouble. They say it's just "free speech" being exercised.

Seems as though they had to trespass to place their flyers though.

I agree with PMP. How can they be excercising free speech when they are crossing onto your property line to do so? I would call the the police department directly and tell them you want them to do random drive-bys in all of the areas that were targeted since they actually did cross onto private property.

This is horrible! I agree with Wendi and PMP. It seems like they should do something about the trespassing issue.

Ah but that is where they are creative. What was inside the little bundle was actually gravel to weight it down so they could throw it onto our property and they never had to cross the line. They are brilliant in their evilness.

Hmmm. Criminal littering? I don't know what constitutes criminal littering. I know if the cops are chasing you because you have drugs and you toss them out the window they can get you for criminal littering. Don't know if this would count though. Certainly I would consider it litter, and they were littering your yard.
