"Christians" protest actions that play down Christmas' religious nature
This bothers me on so many levels. Notice I put the word "Christian" in quotes here and above because REAL Christians don't act this way! America was founded on religious tolerance and that tolerance has evaded our nation as of late. Now if we don't understand something, or if it is different than we are, we lash out at it! That is just wrong! I grew up in a Christian church who did not celebrate Christmas as Jesus' birth. Want to know why? I'll be happy to tell you. Where in the Bible does it say that Jesus was born on December 25th? If it's there by all means point it out to me. Didn't think you could find it. So on we go!
I was brought up believing that Jesus' birth should be celebrated everyday, not just some arbitrary date in December. In fact (and I'm not going to get into here except for this sentence) Christmas is based historically as a celebration of the coming of winter, but that's another story all together. That being said let me say this, Christmas should be celebrated the way YOU want to celebrate it. If someone else chooses to celebrate Christmas differently or even chooses to not celebrate it that is THEIR prerogative. Ramadan, Chanukah, Kwanza or the Solstice it doesn't matter. As Americans it is our right to celebrate whatever HOLIDAY we want to without pushing our views on everyone else. So saying Happy Holiday's doesn't take away from anything. It simply ensures that everyone is covered. It doesn't take away from your celebration and these people that are getting all up in arms over nothing need to simply get over it!
This time of year is for joy and love. Stop trying to start a fight at every turn! You can't beat someone into believing what you do. It just doesn't work! All this type of thing does is push people further and further away from these people who are "Christians". Get over it and let everyone celebrate the way they want. This less than Christian attitude is not what God had in mind and trust me he isn't looking down from heaven and smiling on your actions! I know it comes as a completely foreign idea to you but He doesn't want you to act this way.
Merry Christmas! Happy Chanukah! Happy Kwanza! Happy Ramadan! Happy Solstice! Regardless of what holiday you celebrate we here at Daffodil Lane wish you a very Happy Holiday with lots of joy and love.

Dianne, I'm with you that people can celebrate whatever they want, whenever they want. It's a free country. And I applaud your upbringing in celebrating Jesus' birth every day.
I part ways with you when you describe Christmas as a historical celebration of the coming of winter. Yes, Christmas was declared by Pope Julius I to be on December 25, which happened to coincide with other pagan holidays - and I wouldn't be surprised if he did that on purpose. In the Greek Orthodox Church (in which my wife was raised), they celebrate Christmas on January 6th. However, the holiday "Christmas" has always been about the birth of Christ, no matter when he was actually born.
So if people want to celebrate a winter holiday without acknowledging Christ's birth, that's fine and dandy. However, I suggest they call it something other than "Christmas", as that would be a misnomer.
Also, I'm not sure that America was founded on religious tolerance. It was actually founded on Judeo-Christian principles, with the freedom for its citizens to practice whatever religion they want, without governmental interference.
So to everyone: however and whatever you celebrate, I hope that your holidays are full of joy and peace.

I thought this was kind of an interesting article explaing why Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of Dec. For the record, I'm not necessarily posting this to refute anyone else. I just thought it was interesting.
