NASA, Rice University to Work on Power Cables
This is going to be a great project for America if Rice can pull it off. The current major problem with power generation in the US is that we are losing 70+ percent of the electricity we generate in transmission from one place to another. We don't lack generating capacity, we really lack transmission capacity. So improving conduction by 10 times could really yield massive improvements for the nation as a whole. The weight issue is unique to aircraft, but lighter is better just in cost of transport, so it's not like there won't be gains for earthly applications as well. I agree with Smalley that it won't be an easy exercise, but if they can get the SWNT to a useful production level, the profits to us all will be massive. I wish them lots of luck and I'll keep an eye on their work as much as I can.
