Naughty and Nice Friday

As always we’ll start with the bad and get it out of the way. This week’s bad person is Arlen Spector for complete abandonment of his principles by supporting the nomination of Samuel Alito. Mr. Alito stands for many things that Mr. Spector himself admits to being against and he should be ashamed of himself!

And now for the much more pleasant good side of the fence…this week’s nice person is Barbara Fox Mason. Ms. Mason is profiled in the January 2006 issue of Washingtonian Magazine as one of the Washingtonians of the Year 2005. All of those listed are worth mentioning, but Ms. Mason caught my eye because of her dedicated work with low income children. She is the founder of the Child and Family Network Centers which strive to prepare children from low income families to make it in the academic world.

Among their other services they provide screenings for visual, hearing and learning problems. They also provide social work services for the families of their students if needed. They teach English as a second language classes, as well as focusing on literacy. Her program brings mothers into the classroom as paid aids in a program they call the Paid Parent Program. Ms. Mason thinks that this not only helps the child, but also helps the mother develop solid parenting skills, while encouraging them to rise above their situation and make something of themselves. They are proud of the fact that many of the teachers within the center actually started out within the Paid Parent program and went on to get their diplomas and educate themselves.

Ms. Mason does most of the fundraising for the center, whose waiting list is very long. Each year she must raise roughly $2.5 million to keep the program up and running. With a sparkle in her eye and smile on her face she meets the challenge head on. Barbara Fox Mason truly is a wonderful individual and that’s why she’s the nice person of the week.

Until next week.

May the good Lord bless her, and hopefully kick the guy in the butt.
