McDonald's: Fries Have Potential Allergens
CHICAGO - Not long after disclosing that its french fries contain more trans fat than thought, McDonald's Corp. said Monday that wheat and dairy ingredients are used to flavor the popular menu item — an acknowledgment it had not previously made. The presence of those substances can cause allergic or other medical reactions in food-sensitive consumers.
McDonald's had said until recently that its fries were free of gluten and milk or wheat allergens and safe to eat for those with dietary issues related to the consumption of dairy items. But the fast-food company quietly added "Contains wheat and milk ingredients" this month to the french fries listing on its Web site.
The company said the move came in response to new rules by the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration for the packaged foods industry, including one requiring that the presence of common allergens such as milk, eggs, wheat, fish or peanuts be reported.
First they have more transfats than they first admitted and now they have potential allergens they've never admitted were there. We rarely eat at McDonald's, in fact I can count on one hand the number of times Alexis and I ate there last year alone (2) and Jamison flat out refuses to eat there at all, so even though there are dairy ingredients he wouldn't have to worry about it anyway. Fast food in general is bad news, but this kind of thing could really put a damper on things!

Thanks for posting this article! My nephew has several food allergies including dairy and wheat, and he's fond of McD's. I know my sister-in-law thought she was letting him have safe treat once in a while. I passed the article along to her. So thanks!

I would think that eating out with serious food allergies would be difficult! So far with Alexis she hasn't had any food allergies. So we are lucky with that! :o)

Apparently you have to be very sensitive to dairy or wheat for it to be an issue because Alex has never had a problem with them.

I don't know how much of my nephew's allergies are projected from my sister-in-law, she is a little on the hypochondriac side if you know what I mean.

I had a kid when I taught preschool that was supposedly severely allergic to milk and nuts. One day I caught him sneaking some cheese out of another kids lunch and I freaked out. I was afraid he'd die on the spot by the way his mom went on about things. So I took it away from him and tried to get ahold of his mom but coulsn't so I monitored the situation until he left that afternoon and nothing happened. I told his Aunt what had happened just in case something were to pop up later, though I was pretty sure at that point we were out of the woods and she immediately looked at me as if I had 3 heads. "Why would it matter if he ate cheese?" I was stunned! "His mom told me he was severely allergic to dairy and nuts." She was horrified! "I'm so sorry she told you that. She's crazy! This kid isn't allergic to anything. She's just trying to get sympathy from people. She has serious issues!" It was very weird to say the least.

My SIL is always sick and supposedly has allergies herself and I'm sure she projects a lot of it onto Jonah and the poor kid has had enough to deal with without adding more to it. But you can't tell her anything. They had all of the carpeting ripped up in the house and had hardwood put down because of allergens, I could go on and on!

Ummm, we ripped up all our carpeting (except for the stairs) and put down Pergo because of allergens. It really helps for dust, mold, and pet dander allergies. Given all the disgusting stuff that was under the carpet and pad when we removed it, I wouldn't be surprised if it was healthier for non-allergic people, too.
And yeah, it is difficult eating out with severe food allergies--I can't even go into restaurants that primarily serve seafood, and when I go into a new restaurant I have to ask about every item on the menu to make sure it doesn't have nuts in it and find out what kind of mushrooms it has. I prefer to eat places that I've already been through that process a couple of times.

I think Joanne was just pointing out some people do it for attention rather than actually having real, severe allergies.
As for hardwood floors, I'd rip out my carpet in a heartbeat and put down all hardwoods! But I hate carpet. :o) LOL

Sorry, my mother-in-law doesn't 'believe in' allergies and thinks it's all for effect. So I get kind of touchy about that.
