Who Doesn't Wear Their Sealbelt?

I saw two separate seat belt check sites in Columbia today and surprisingly they actually had people pulled over! Who is that stupid? I've heard all the lame excuses from people who don't wear their seatbelts and they are just that...LAME!! It amazes me in this day and age there are still people out there who don't wear their seatbelt. The mind reels.

My grandmother used to do that back in the day when she was still driving, although her excuse wasn't lame, it was just the honest truth...she was lazy and she'd tell you as much, but if she rode in my car she had to wear a seat belt or I wouldn't take her anywhere. My mom's rule growing up was that the car didn't move until all seat belts were fastened and that's my rule as well. If you don't want to fasten up you can get out and walk, not only for insurance purposes, but it's common sense and if that isn't enough for you then it's my car and that's my rule!

A large number of those who are dead in the crash reports I read every day at work. Down in the South some people believe the "rural" myth that a seat belt will kill you in a roll over. Speaking as a person who has lived through a roll over the only thing a person has to think about is the sun roof if they are tall. My head went through mine because it was only 3" from the top of my head when I sat in my old SUV. Without a seat belt I would have been a statistic on a Mississippi section of US-72 that would never have been reviewed by the the state DOT. On my Saturn I have lowering seats I'm 5" from the sun roof and I have a closeable cover over it.

I remember the Georgia Speaker of the House fighting mandatory seatbelts for years. We joked that it was because he was too fat to fit into his -- he was a very big man.

My brother indoctrinated me about seatbelts when he started driving. He got stuck carting me around, but he (like your mom) wouldn't start the car till I was buckled in. Now I couldn't imagine not wearing one. It's just common sense, kind of like motorcycle helmets, but there are people who are too dumb to wear those too. Maybe it's natural selection at work. ;)
