African Americans warn of rift if Mfume sidelined

I guess I should stop reading right wing hate sites because this is really getting to be a tired Republican refrain here in Maryland and I'm willing to bet everywhere the Republicans have put an African American candidate on the ballot. African Americans are going to abandon the Democratic in droves because they don't feel like they are getting represented enough is their refrain. I don't know a polite way to say this, so I'm just going to say it. African Americans aren't stupid as the Republican party seems to think them to be.

Let's be realistic, all the Maryland Democratic candidates running for governor chose African American candidates to be on their tickets. They represent a little over a quarter of the voters and they are taken very seriously by the Democratic party. But in the end these decisions are made at the ballot box and by the cruel mathematics of fundraising. Personally I'm leaning heavily towards voting for Mfume in the Primary as a matter of principal since Cardin has yet to show the kind of fortitude I expect from a Senator of the great state of Maryland. But in the end, it's going to be the votes that are made.

African Americans represent 40% of the vote in the Maryland Democratic party, if they are truly voting as a block they can decide who the next Democratic Senatorial Candidate will be, but the reality of the situation is that they aren't voting as a block, they are voting for who they think is the best choice to represent them just like all the rest of the Democrats in the party. And like the rest of the Democrats in November, they are going to for the most qualified person for the job, and pretty much all of us know that it isn't Michael Steele. The guy is so unqualified for the job, he would be nothing but a rubber stamp for the radical right wing policies of the Republican party. And it doesn't matter your race, it's bad for America and Maryland for the Republicans to have another Rubber Stamp in the Senate. So even though I don't like Cardin, I'd suck it up and protect my country and my state and vote for him anyway if he wins. Just like the same people that do like him, would suck it up and vote to protect our country by voting for Mfume if the election goes the other way.

The Republicans are desperately trying to create the illusion that there is some sinister conspiracy against African Americans by the Democratic Party. Yet anyone that can turn on a TV saw how the Republican party feels about the subject, by watching the Katrina footage. The Southern Strategy is no secret, it's a fundamental belief of the Republican to embrace racism. It's what defines the Republican party and African America support of Republicans reflects that. Could the Democrats do better? You're damn right they could! But it's sort of the choice between the guys that are trying to do better and the guys that are trying to kill you. I know which one I would pick and I don't think that anyone has that big of a challenge to come to same conclusion in November.
