Bipartisan Bill for Net Neutrality Passes, 20-13
Given how corrupt and vile your average Republican is, it's a complete surprise to see them struggling across the divide to stand up for American freedoms. Evidently their bribes from the Telecos weren't large enough to justify selling out the American people this time. Of course this was just a committee vote so this isn't over yet.
If you're not aware of the Net neutrality debate, here are the basics. The Republican leaning Telecos want to control what you can get access to on the Internet, so they can cut off the rising power of the on-line communities in political discussions. The Telecos have created legislation that basically allows them to no longer guarantee access to sites according to the international standards of the Internet. Instead they would be able to cut you off from any information that they didn't feel you needed acces. It's a similar system to what the Chinese use to oppress their citizens access to the Internet.
It's so funny how the Republicans have chosen to approach this, claiming that the Democrats are trying to "regulate" the Internet. The Internet was always regulated by standards setup by the people that created it, they are doing nothing but maintaining the existing system so the Republicans can't kill off all innovation. Now most smart people already knew that, but we all know how dumb your average Republican is, they happily jump on board anything against regulation. Funny in light of all the catastrophic failures that have come to define Republican efforts to deregulate industries, I think they would have learned by now. But they're Republicans, they can't learn so no point in waiting for them too. I'm sure we will be seeing something like the Republican ads saying CO2 is good for us for allowing ourselves to be marched into Prison camps. We've all always been oppressed, why would we change now??
