Allan Lichtman, Democrat for U.S. Senate

I found the presentation by Mr. Lichtman disturbing. Not that he said anything that would be offensive to me, but for the realization that while I'm an idealist, I suddenly realized that my idealism doesn't spread to people anymore. Allan has a powerful reformer message, he wants to clean up Washington, he wants to change the way things run there. He's working diligently to get around a party structure that has become corrupt and unresponsive. And yet as he hit every single one of my high point concerns, I realized that I couldn't believe he could pull off what he was proposing. By removing the taint of corporate money from his campaign, he'd cut himself off from the funds necessary to beat Steele in the fall. Mind you Republicans won't even blink twice about corrupt corporate money, it's their bread and butter. They don't care what it costs the American people for them to use that money, they just want to win at all costs. Worse than that he used a Republican meme to justify his candidacy. It just goes to prove how deeply the cancer that is killing our country runs in all of us. Beyond that he's a brilliant guy, with vast experience on a wide range of issues. He's energetic in a way that I've failed to see in a lot of political candidates. His website is great and he utilizes blogging technology effectively, which is also completely missing from standard candidates. He's a great and personable fellow, but he didn't manage to convince me.

How does the quote go? "In normal times, evil would be fought by good. But in times like these, well, it should be fought by another kind of evil. " I've calculated the strength of the Republican enemy and I don't think good can win this battle. So we need another kind of evil. Will it bring progress or change to our country? Probably not, but right now leaving the things the way they are means the destruction of our way of life. A different kind of evil buys us precious time to build the infrastructure for real change that saves my daughters future from the doom that is ahead on our current course. It's as simple as that for me. The cruel calculus of what can be achieved verses what needs to be achieved. I have nothing that tells me that Mfume or Cardin will be any worse than the man they are trying to replace, I suspect the former will be a step up and the latter will be a major step backwards, but I know Republicans holding the seat will effectively end any chance of this country making forward progress in my life time. So I'm willing to roll the dice on the front runners.
