Election Day for the Netroots

Well today is the day! There are two major Netroots supported candidates up for election today. So keep your fingers crossed folks! In the CA-50 Busby is running for the seat of disgraced Republican criminal Duke Cunningham. This has become a race of desperation for the Republican party. They have a massive registration advantage in the district, yet they've had to spend 10 million now trying to motivate the Republican base to vote. The right wing noise machine is also in full force in the race as well, trashing Busby at every opportunity, trying to maintain the sinister structure of corruption that has come to define the Republican party. I'm still not overly hopeful at this point in the race, polls have Busby at 49% support. But there are some things working against her, the Governor's race has turned extremely ugly on the Democratic side and that is likely to be a drag on Busby because people will just not vote. Add in Republican hate for this country and the desire to see it destroyed and I think her numbers will be closer to my original guess of 44% to 46%. But hopefully today I will be proved wrong. Anything above 46% is a defeat for the Republican party.

The second big race is the Senate race in Montana. Jon Tester is the Netroots support candidate verses the establishment Democrat Morrison. Morrison is suffering heavily from his own ethical problems, which would make him easy prey in a red leaning state combined with the right wing noise machine. Tester has gained a lot of support from Democrats in the last couple of weeks, and he's pulled ahead in the polls, but this close to the election anything could happen. Burns is a vile representation of everything that the Republican party is. He's knee deep in the most hideous corruption scandals in Washington and he's so obstinate that he doesn't have any concerns because the Republicans of Montana support corruption and criminality because it's a part of the make up of the Republican mindset. While I'm confident this is mostly true of Republicans nationwide, I wouldn't put even money on it out West. When I lived there, there use to be a sense of national pride and independence that transcended political party. Now you never see that down South or in any other of the places where the Republican have a strangle hold over the region, but I really find it hard to believe that the frontier types would tolerate this kind of behavior. I could be absolutely wrong about them, I've been proven completely wrong by the levels of corruptions that define the Republican to this day and how strongly the minions on the ground love the constant acts of criminality and efforts to undermine the very fabric of our society. Their hate for our country knows no bounds and or limits, they just want it destroyed no matter the cost. I just never could imagine that kind of sinister behavior become so ingrained in a people who were once so dedicated to making America a better place. But there is no time to figure out what went wrong, we've got to save America from this cancer that is the Republican party.

I guess Mr Tester won? So there's a victory for netroots. I'll give some stuff from polipundit.com about CA-50 below (note: right wing site, but quite enlightening). To boil it down:
In yesterday's election there was a Repub, a Dem and another candidate to the right of the Repub on immigration (Xenophobe?). The results were roughly
Repub 50
Dem 45
Xen 5
In the Pres election of 2004 the results for CA50 were roughly
Repub 55
Dem 45
See a pattern? All that work in CA-50 and truly, not much to show.
I live in CA, in an area heavily inhabited by illegals. In the media the issue is framed like this:
"Hardworking, noble brown-skinned immigrants under attack from racist right wingers." In reality, things are less cut and dried. The illegals are mostly good people, of course. Where I live there are tons of progressive Dems who rant about upping the minimum wage and support a living wage. Yet they have no qualms about exploiting poor Mexicans to clean their toilets. It is not just rich Repub business owners who dump their workers onto emergency rooms and food banks. Also, here in CA a huge percentage of the people in jail are illegals. This causes overcrowding and early release of other prisoners. Some of these other prisoners are not just victims of police harrassment. Some are really bad guys who are a danger to have out on our streets.
Anyway, just wanted to let you know that this is not a simplistic issue at all. Instead of racism, the dominant force is more exploitation. The exploiters come in all political stripes. They wind up dumping the burden of caring for people with no safety net onto the rest of us. Kinda like "taxation without representation."
Hope you enjoy the Tester victory!

Here's the polipundit report--
Bilbray is a former lobbyist for the Federation for American Immigration Reform, and is a virtual poster-child for the Tom Tancredo wing of the GOP.

On the other side was Francine Busby, a pro-illegal Democrat, who hammered hard on the “Republican culture of corruption” theme. If there is one district where this might have worked, it is CA-50, where disgraced former Congressman Randy Duke Cunningham resigned, leading to this special election.

The tough-on-illegal-immigration stance won. Bilbray seems to have won about 50 percent of the vote (latest results here)

Busby appears unable to break the 45 percent threshold, which is about what Al Gore and John Kerry won in this district. Add to that the fact that Democrats had contested statewide primaries yesterday, likely leading to high Democrat turnout, and you begin to appreciate the importance of the 45 percent threshold.

About 4 percent of the vote went to a candidate who was to the right of Bilbray on immigration!

Turn out was low in the California yesterday. Around 38%, the Democratic infighting suppressed the turnout.
