Looking For Ideas
I've been thinking about trying to find a job that I could do from home for a while now. Now that Alexis is a bit older it would be nice to have some extra money coming in, but I have no clue where to start! I am thinking about putting Alexis into a morning preschool this fall so that would free up 2 to 3 mornings a week and of course I could always hire a babysitter if need be to make it easier on all of us, but being that I want to be home for her because she needs me and that is the most important aspect of my life right now, so I want to work from here so if she needs me, she has me. I know that's not unheard of in today's world, but I don't know how to find what I'm looking for!
Would any of you have any ideas on the subject of how to find a job working from home or know someone that would? I would think in the environmental field someone would have such an option, given it would be environmentally prudent, but I haven't found anything as of yet. I have no clue where to start looking! I'm checking with everyone I know!
I'm not talking about sales or anything like that. That's not me! But I know there are other types of jobs out there! With a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Management there has to be something out there? Editing? Web development? Something! I'm good at all these things and I learn quickly!
I know you guys are brilliant, so share the ideas! If someone gives me a lead or an idea for something that turns into what I'm looking for I will send you a small token of my regard! So come on people....Lay the ideas on me! I await your responses with baited breath! :O)

Well, back when I only had Alex, I used to teach after-school science enrichment courses for Hands On Science Outreach in the Howard County schools. Not actually an in-home job, but it was fun and paid reasonably well for a couple-hour-a-week job. I don't know if they're in the schools around your area.
I know what you mean about not wanting to do sales, though. I think I'd rather dig ditches than do sales!
Have you ever thought of teaching classes in quilting/knitting/cooking/gardening? Or maybe a organic gardening design business?

Sorry, I have no clue what happened with that link.

I guess I should have also specified during the day hours, preferably before 3 pm. By the time the end of the day rolls around Alexis really needs me, especially on the days she doesn't have a nap.
As for teaching a class, I'm not good at that. I did teach preschool years ago, but I am deathly afraid of speaking in front of people older than the age of a child. I'm extremely shy. I do fine one of one, or with friends, but group activities make me extremely nervous to the point of panic and the thought of teaching a class makes me feel ill just thinking about it! That's why something computer related, or in a web environment would be fantastic for me! The anonymity is my cup of tea. That is why I did so well in online classes, because I wasn't afraid to participate because it wasn't face to face. If that had been an in person sort of thing it would never have happened! I would have faded into the background.
Thanks for the ideas. It gives me something to think about.

Dianne, Hello there, I am Jamison's Aunt Joyce, I am married to his Uncle Tony (his momma's twin), you might try medical transcribing...I understand there are needs for it out there and you are able to work from home. You can set your own schedule, during day time or after Alexis has gone to bed!! I really enjoy your site, especially the pics of Alexis!!
Best of Luck, sweetie

Thanks Joyce! I hadn't thought of that. Definitely something to think about! :o)
Glad you enjoy the website. It's a way to keep everyone up to date on Alexis. :o)

I have a friend who does medical transcribing as a second job and she does very well at it.
Also, have you ever thought about selling your crafts, sewing and such through this blog? I have several blogger friends that do that, and to be quite honest your stuff is nicer? That way you could do what you love and make a little money at the same time!

Then again there is always typing research papers for those who can't type. You have an in at the University, so you might know someone who needs a book or a research paper done.

That's an idea Darlene. I'll have to think about that one for a while. I don't know if anyone would be interested, but maybe I can come up with some ideas and do an informal poll or something as to what kinds of things people might be interested in buying.
Donna, I'll look into that. I know at UMUC they discourage that sort of thing (typing for others) because they feel like at the college level you should do it yourself, but maybe I can find another school that doesn't prohibit the notion.

Have you thought about enviromential permit preparation?
Posted by: Royal at July 31, 2006 3:14 PM
I don't know much about environmental permits. I studied them in brief, but not enough to actually prepare them. I think you have to be certified for that too. I'll have to check into it and see.
