Severna Park Fourth of July Parade

Well I did another parade today and got an offer for another in Annapolis, but at that point I knew I was too cooked to risk it. This was no where close to as relaxed as the one I did on Memorial Day. This time there were A LOT more people than parade marchers and instead of it being a short hike it was a brutal force march. Ok, it wasn't that bad, but I thought it was going to be about a mile and it turns out the spot where I thought the parade was going to end, was actually the first street change the parade would take for the day. My one mile parade rapidly turned into 3 to 5 miles hike in 90+ degree heat. I didn't march for a candidate this time, so there won't be any pictures. I marched for the Young Democrats. On that front it was actually a pretty interesting exercise. Most people seemed to be surprised that we existed at all. I know for a fact that the Young Dems have been very active the last couple of years. Evidently we haven't been doing anything in the Redder parts of the County, but well we can sure fix that.

One thing I sort of enjoy about these events is that I get to meet the people that I've heard about.

Jeff Gauges - He's running for for Register of Wills. Definitely a great guy, I met him at my first District 33 meeting. He still hasn't put up a website yet, so I'm going to have to lean on him about that.

Jim Corwin - He's running for the Congressional Seat in the MD-1. Dr. Corwin is a great guy and great candidate. I don't live in the MD-1, but he's one of my favorite candidates.

Doug Gansler - He's running for Attorney General and he had a good number of people marching with him. I've gotten to know a lot of his campaign people, so they came around to say hello to me.

George Johnson - Well I marched for him before, so it's no secret I like him. He's a great guy and he always seems to have a fire engine. The little boy in me can't resist a fire engine! Anyway, he's running for County Executive, once again I know a lot of his crew, so they always talk to me.

Craig Reynolds - Craig is running for Delegate in my district. He's running a powerful grass roots campaign. The guy is a human dynamo, he was everywhere on both side of the parade route shaking hands and talking to his students. I swear the guy should be running for the MD-3 seat he knows so many people! He's very inspirational to watch in action, if only we had a couple hundred more just like him!

Rose Forrest - She's going to be a powerful candidate, I think her and Craig are going to provide a devastating one-two punch that the Republican party isn't going to easily recover from.

Of course, I got to talk to all the Young Democrats and I guess I should mention them, because nearly all of us are candidates for office these days. Andrew Pruski, Stephen W. Thibodeau, and Jennifer Miller. Oh and along the parade route, we came across John Schneider who is also running for DCC, but he's technically the DFA President for Anne Arundel County!

Now all the candidates that I remember, that either weren't there or I didn't get a chance to talk too. Thomas Fleckenstein, Jacqueline Allsup, Dennis Callahan (btw, the plane pulling the banner very interesting), Frank Weathersbee, Patricia Weathersbee, John Sarbanes, Mishonda Baldwin, Ben Cardin, Kweisi Mfume, and I'm sure I left out someone. It was hot, cut me a break!

One non-political group that deserves serious recognition for their great service. The Severn River Lions Club. I want to give a very special thanks to their hard work at the end of the parade. They were there handing out popsicles to everyone as they finished the parade! It's rare such an organization just gets immediately on my good side, but they won me over with that kind of advanced planning. Once the Young Dems were in the parking lot, Craig Reynolds also went the extra mile and gave us all some of the ice water he had for his crew of helpers. He's such a great guy, always working to help everyone out. Definitely the definition of what we need in Annapolis.
