DNA in Urine Can Reveal Disease
I'm a big fan of non-invasive medical technology and this one takes the cake folks! This company Xenomics discovered that they could detect markers of certain kinds of diseases. They are going to go into clinical trials in 2007, so it's very close. It appears that they can detect a wide range of bad things. The cancers are a bit tricky, but they are working to narrow them down. The most important one of course is the fact that it will provide a way around the dreaded Amniocentesis. There are few more terrifying procedures in modern medicine and I'll be happy to see it relegated to dust bin of history. With this you'll be able to identify the gender with 100% certainty (the Chinese have a blood test that works off the same principal) and detect any genetic disorders without posing any risk to the baby. I say put that research first, but the big money is never put into protecting women and children, it's always into cash cows of communicable diseases. But it's on the to do list. Hopefully they will move it up the list since one in two hundred attempts causes a miscarriage.
