Mandatory evacuations to begin Sunday morning in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered a mandatory evacuation of the city beginning 8 a.m. Sunday but urged residents to consider escaping "the mother of all storms" before then.

"You need to be scared," Nagin said of the Category 4 hurricane tearing along Cuba's western coast. "You need to be concerned, and you need to get your butts moving out of New Orleans right now. This is the storm of the century."

The city's west bank is to evacuate at 8 a.m.

Nagin said the city had evacuated roughly 10,000 people Saturday on buses, trains and planes, in addition to the thousands who left on their own. Buses from collection points would continue running until midnight and resume at 6 a.m. Sunday, he said.

"This storm is so powerful and growing more powerful every day," Nagin said. "I'm not sure we've seen anything like this."

I'm not sure if New Orleans can survive another direct hit given they aren't completely back on their feet from Katrina, but I do know one thing...New Orleans has an indomitable spirit that can not be denied. If anyone can stand up after this is over I'd put my money on New Orleans every time!

Over 40 Million People Tuned In To Hear Obama

At least 40 million Americans watched Senator Barack Obama accept the Democratic nomination for president Thursday night, a record for convention viewership that exceeded even the expectations of his aides.

The historic speech by the first African-American presidential nominee of a major political party reached 38.4 million viewers on 10 broadcast and cable networks, Nielsen Media Research said Friday. PBS estimated that an additional 3.5 million had watched its prime-time coverage.

The ratings dwarfed the audience for the Summer Olympics and the season finale of “American Idol” in May, and added to what was already a sense of buoyancy within the Obama campaign that the night had gone better than planned.

Despite Republicans’ advance ridicule of the enormous venue, Invesco Field, and the set, an elaborate, columned backdrop, Democrats went to bed having heard terrific reviews of the final night of their convention. Indeed, the backdrop, initially derided as resembling a Greek temple — playing into the Republican line of attack that Mr. Obama’s supporters had deified him — turned out to be something of a hit; television reviewers and commentators praised the overall staging.

Barack Obama gave an amazing speech! It helped me to remember how things should be and feel hope for the first time in a long while. I wasn't the only one that felt this way...Apparently a lot of people are seeing a new hope for our country.

Gulf Residents Evacuating Ahead of Gustav

BELLE CHASE, Louisiana (CNN) -- As Hurricane Gustav intensifed on its projected path to the Gulf Coast -- ravaged in 2005 by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita -- residents packed and fled inland.

In Plaquemines Parish, where Katrina roared ashore as a Category 3 storm days after its initial landfall in Florida, Parish President Billy Nungesser called for a mandatory evacuation beginning Saturday at noon (1 p.m. ET).

"As soon as it's safe to come back in, we will reopen the parish," he told CNN on Saturday. "We hope they take that warning."

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jinal said more than a dozen parishes have declared states of emergency, adding that several coastal parishes began voluntary evacuations Friday and would begin mandatory evacuations on Saturday around noon (1 p.m. ET).

Gustav neared Cuba's western tip Saturday, packing winds close to 120 mph. The storm could reach the U.S. Gulf coast late Monday or Tuesday, as a Category 3 or strengthen to a Category 4, the National Hurricane Center said.

3 years ago Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, New Orleans and Mississippi in particular. And it looks like another one might be heading to New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast now and who know where Hanna is going to loop?

There are rumors that it wasn't happening and now that it is again. Who knows! All of the original cast are doing the voices, except for SMG, which I must say sadly doesn't surprise me.

Now Isaac Hayes?

(CNN) -- Soul singer and arranger Isaac Hayes, who won Grammy awards and an Oscar for the theme from the 1971 action film "Shaft," has died, sheriff's officials in Memphis, Tennessee, reported Sunday.

Relatives found Hayes, 65, unconscious in his home next to a still-running treadmill, said Steve Shular, a spokesman for the Shelby County Sheriff's Department.

Paramedics attempted to revive him and took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 2 p.m., the sheriff's department said.

No foul play is suspected, the agency said in a written statement.

Rest in peace Mr. Hayes. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.

RIP Bernie Mac

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Bernie Mac, the Emmy and Golden Globe nominated actor and comedian who worked his way to Hollywood success from an impoverished upbringing on Chicago's South Side, died Saturday at age 50.

"Actor/comedian Bernie Mac passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital," his publicist, Danica Smith, said in a statement from Los Angeles, California.

She said no other details were available and asked that his family's privacy be respected.

The comedian suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body's organs, but had said the condition went into remission in 2005. He recently was hospitalized and treated for pneumonia, which his publicist said was not related to the disease.

I had heard that he had pneumonia recently, but I was still shocked to see this headline. Rest in peace Mr. Mac...You may have been crude at times, but I enjoyed you for the most part. Our thoughts are with his friends and family.
