They Kick You When You're Down
Children have an innate sense of when you are sick or down and they proceed to kick you repeatedly. I woke up this morning with a sore throat, a fever and just general blahness and Alexis has taken advantage of it at every turn! Apparently Alexis can get in trouble when she is NOT quiet too! I was working on getting a new user set up at Lose This Weight and she was watching The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and singing along with Pooh. In the past the rule has always been if she's making noise you know she isn't up to anything, but boy was I wrong! I had brought down a brand new package of wipes this morning and laid them on the table. Alexis picked them up and I didn't think anything about it because she likes to squish the package. Well sometime while my back was turned on her she actually figured out how to open the package and proceeded to ruin the whole pack by rubbing them on everything in sight. So I made her throw them away and then sit in her timeout chair. On the plus side I don't need to dust now, on the minus side well you get the picture! It's going to be a very long day. When Jamison gets home I'm going back to bed!

Well, at least she was just cleaning with them while she was removing them from the package. Marilyn put all the wipers "inna potty" the last time she got hold of them. Fortunately I caught her before she tried to flush them.

Potty Training Irony
Alexis sat on the potty for 1 HOUR and then I made her get up, because let's face it 1 hour of sitting on the bathroom floor is as about as thrilling as watching paint dry. So I gave her a couple of stickers for being good and sitting on the potty and sent her on her way. 20 minutes later she wet her pull-up...the potty training gods are NOT amusing!! We'll try again after lunch and before her nap. I just keep telling myself that once we get this down NO MORE DIAPERS EVER!! I just have to focus on that wonderful thought! :o)
NOTE: This is NOT an invitation for potty training advise. I don't care how your child potty trained because every child is different. This is just a documentation for posterity sake.

Valentine's Cupcakes
When I asked Alexis what she wanted to make for Jamison for a Valentine's treat she immediately said cupcakes, because my girl is all about cake! So we had to run to the store to pick up something else and while we were there I picked up the stuff to make the cupcakes. I checked everything we needed for the cupcakes for dairy EXCEPT for the cake mix, which it turns out has milk in it. So I got a recipe online and adpated it with non dairy ingredients and they are to DIE for! I'll be making these for Alexis' birthday party this year! She helped mix everything up and add the sprinkles! :o)
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup soy margarine
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 3/4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 cup lactose-free milk
Preheat oven to 350 F. Sray a 9x9 inch pan with non-stick spray or line a muffin pan with paper liners.
In a medium bowl, cream together the sugar and butter. Beat in the eggs and then stir in the vanilla. Combine flour and baking powder, add to the creamed mixture and mix well. Stir in the milk until batter is smooth. Pour or spoon batter into the prepared pan.
Bake for 30 to 40 minutes in the preheated oven for 9X9 Cake or 20 to 25 minutes for cupcakes or until toothpick comes out clean.
Makes 1 dozen cupcakes.

I have a egg-free/dairy-free baking mix recipe that I use to make cakes, pancakes, waffles, muffins, biscuits etc. By varying the amount of sugar and water/soy milk/rice milk and adding other ingredients it works for just about anything. (Except cookies.) I can send it to you if you like.
Posted by: cjmr at February 15, 2006 9:04 AM
Thanks, but I think we're set. I'm just adpating my current recipes so the taste doesn't change. Jamison is not big on change and most often refuses to try anything new. This way things still taste the same so it isn't an issue.

She Never Ceases to Amaze Me
There are some days that you know no matter what happens you'll always remember. When I'm old and gray, with whatever ailments I might have, looking back on my life, I know I'll remember this morning. I've been working at my desk on work things, email, the blog and books ideas and Alexis has been playing next to me on the floor with her new Princess tea set. The heating system cut on and Alexis happened to be sitting next to the register on the floor and it amazed her and she said "Wow!" With that one simple word my heart melted and as I watched her playing next to the French doors, letting it blow her hair around from the air coming out of the register I realized that as simple as it was it was, it was one of those defining moments that I'll remember and cherish long after she has forgotten.

Apparently You Can't Get A Minute To Yourself
When Alexis is quiet and you're in another room you know it's time to go check on her. So what before my wondering eyes did appear today when I went to check on my darling silent minion but a BLOODY FINGER!! Alexis had taken it upon herself to "help" unload the dishwasher and she cut her finger on a knife. It amounted to the equivalent of a paper cut, but when you walk around the corner and your child is trying to hide their finger from you because they know they are in trouble and you see BLOOD you freak the hell out!!! You start imagining a severed finger or a cut so deep you can see bone! Your mind immediately sees the worst! She was so quiet because she knew she wasn't supposed to unload the dishwasher alone, let alone EVER touch a knife! When she realized her ruse was up THEN she started to cry. Want to know why? It wasn't because her finger actually hurt, it was because she knew she was in trouble and "Mommy was sad"!! We cleaned it up and put on a bandaide, which she keeps taking off, and she'll look at her finger and say "Oh gosh!!" Oh gosh is right my little hellion!! You're lucky you didn't cut your finger off!! I swear, some days I can assure you I DON'T GET PAID ENOUGH FOR WHAT I DO!!!!
I now return you to your regularly scheduled Daffodil Lane.

Posted by: Yolanda at February 9, 2006 9:49 AM
She LOVES to unload the dishwasher! We let her help us by putting things away that on her level like the lids for the pots and pans and the silverware. But she knows she isn't supposed to do it by herself and she knows that knives and scissors are off limits! Thus the allure I'm sure. She figured out how to unlock the dishwasher by herself so she thought it was be nice to help. She's sweet, but she's a handful! LOL :o)

Shower
Alexis LOVES to take a shower! It's her new thing. And it's MUCH easier than a bath! So when she asks to take a shower instead of a bath we're all for it, especially on nights like tonight when she hasn't had a nap and is past screechy! We stand outside the shower and make sure she gets wet and then help her with the shampoo, soap and stuff like that. Then move the shower head around to make sure she's all washed off. She's growing up so fast! :o)

"Mommy's Buying a Monster!"
This morning I ran to the grocery store to pick up a few non-dairy things for my "can't be sick" husband and I decided to get a lobster. I've been wanting lobster for about a month now and just kept forgetting to get one while I was at the store. When we were in the sea food department I saw that tank and said to myself "Self get a lobster!" So I asked the nice lady to get a lobster out of the tank for me and she got him all weighed and bagged up. Alexis was AMAZED!!
"Mommy what's that?"
"That's a lobster Alexis."
"The "monster" is moving Mommy!"
"Yes Alexis the LOBSTER is moving."
"Cool! Hold me?" (Translation: Can I hold it?)
"Yes you can hold it, but be very careful. He will move!"
"The Monster has eyes!"
"Yes the lobster has eyes."
"I pet him!"
And so the conversation went. Then the funny part...not that it wasn't funny up to that point, but anyway. Alexis would tell everyone we passed in the grocery store about the lobster.
"Mommy's buying a monster! I'm holding it! It's so cuuuuuuuuuuuuuutttttttttttteeeeeeeeeeeee!"
See when Alexis says the word cute it comes out with about 2,000 syllables. One lady was so charmed by Alexis she would ask her where the "monster" was each time we saw her.
"Where's the monster?"
"Shhh!!! He's hiding!"
Or
"Shh!!! He's sleeping!"
When we got up to the front of the store and were checking ourselves out she asked Alexis where the monster was again.
"Mommy put him on the scrolly thing!" (Translation: The check out belt.)
The lady laughed and told Alexis she had made her day. Sometimes reality is so much better than anything you could ever make up!
So I'm having steamed "monster" for lunch. What about you?

I used to like "monster"--that was pre-pregnancy #1. Now eating anything crustacean would send me to the ER.

Posted by: Jamie at February 6, 2006 2:41 PM

Every child has a "You're crazy!" look or as I like to call it their "Go to Hades!" look and they perfect it at a young age! Believe it or not Nelson already has one! "Mommy's Sad!"
Alexis didn't take a nap today (who would have thought?) and thus is reaching the end of her screechydom. I'm currently in the process of making her dinner. A few minutes ago she came into the kitchen carrying her pitchfork and had the mother of all meltdowns. Quite appropriate with the pitchfork no? I promptly gave her a stern admonition and sent her to her time out chair. Now she's sitting in that chair whining and saying over and over again "Mommy's sad!" Gee Alexis you think? Someone is getting ready to eat dinner and go straight to bed!!!! Do not pass go! Do not collect $200!

"No Pwease!"
We've been working with Alexis to say "No please" when something happens that she doesn't like. I started this a month or so ago when it became apparent to me that a lot of "well meaning" adults are actually quite cruel to children by harassing them mercilessly, when in fact they are the ones that should get a grip on reality not the child!
Anyway, so instead of Alexis pitching a fit, we've been teaching her to simply say "No please!" or "Stop please!" and then if whomever is bothering her doesn't do as she says then I say something to them about it because it's ridiculous to pick on a child! This seems to be working quite well, except for now whenever Alexis doesn't want to do something she says "No pwease!" or "Stop pwease!" So now we are working on helping her to understand that sometimes there are things you don't want to do (i.e. bathing, eating, going to sleep) that you have to do anyway because they are what's best for you.
Last night Alexis didn't want to go to bed and she kept saying "No pwease! No pwease! NO PWEASE!!" When we explained to her that she had to go to sleep and how it is alright to say "No please!" when someone is touching you or tickling you or being mean to you and you don't like it, sometimes when Mommy and Daddy do things "No please!" doesn't work because we are doing what's best for you. She looked stunned and told me, "But Mom I'm using my words!" I had to suppress a laugh at that one. "Yes you are using your words and it's very good that you are, but you still have to go to bed!"
Isn't parenting fun? LOL ;o)

You know, I've seen drawings like that in fancy museums and art gallery websites with prices in the five- and six-figures.
You go, girl!

Yeah, I was looking at it for a bit and it appears to be her abstract baroque fusion attempt at Mary holding the baby Jesus. Who knew she would start with fusion art style??? I mean look at this image is it not the exact same source? I told her to start with a still-life, but kids these days they just go for the controversial subjects immediately.

More Knifty Knitter
My head feels fuzzy, but I made Alexis a hat anyway. I think it turned out cute. I used the next size up loom for this hat.

I love that pink fuzzy yarn. I was looking at those knitting wheels in Michael's yesterday, but decided I was already spending enough on the craft materials I was buying for Alex's school projects. What can you make with them other than hats and scarves?
Hope you guys are feeling better this morning.
BTW, I tagged you for a meme.

It's actually two yarns put together. A soft, pink, fuzzy yarn and a loopy pink yarn. I thought it looked good together. :o)

Is it easy to do the double yarn thing with the Knifty Knitter? I love the double yarn effect, but have a hard time knitting or crocheting with double yarn when using standard needles/hooks. I keep dropping half a stitch.

I thought it was easy, but then again I don't have trouble with two yarns on regular needles though. I always use bamboo needles and I rarely if ever drop stitches. They seem to work much better than plastic or metal needles. The looms are plastic, but I haven't dropped a stitch yet. They are pretty user friendly.
