Getting Back To Normal
Things with Alexis are getting back to normal. She's still a little grumpy, but her mood has improved 1,000% since Jamison got home last night! I was amused when we were getting her ready for bed last night and she was acting up a bit. Jamison turned to me and said "THIS is better than before?" I just laughed and told him "Which part of the past few days were hell on earth confused you?!!!?!?" I don't think he grasped the magnitude of her anger or her actions toward me up until that point.
Anyway, this morning we ran to BJ's to get some fruits and veggies. We came home and I cleaned out the fridge and got everything put away and then we ventured out for lunch. I spent the majority of the afternoon cutting out blocks for my beach quilt. I decided to go with a quilt as you go/raw edge flannel quilt with smaller crabs! I even threw in a few turtles on the corners via some flannel with embroidered turtles because I wanted to! It's going to be really cute! I actually hope to get the majority of it done tomorrow, we'll see how it goes!
There are 32 15 inch blocks (4 different fabrics, 3 make up the pattern and one helps make up the border). There are also 16 6 inch X 15 inch blocks (8 navy, 4 with turtles) that round out the border. And there are a total of 16 blue crabs, 2 per the 8 blocks whose material looks like waves. I also had to cut out 32 13 X 13 and 16 4X13 batting blocks. It's going to be cute and it should come together quickly! Click on the extended entry below to see a rough layout of the quilt and the various aspects of the blocks. Keep in mind this is a very rough layout given Alexis was walking all over it and the blocks were sliding around on the hardwood floor! I just spread it out on the dining room floor to get an idea of what I was working with!
But anyway, that's what we've been up to today. I've been working on the beach quilt, Alexis have been playing and "helping" me out, all while checking to make sure Jamison hadn't disappeared again and Jamison has been relaxing and playing a video game. It's very nice to all be back together! :O)
Now tomorrow all I have to do is start sewing! :o)

The Soundtrack Of Our Lives For the Past Few Days!
"Grumpy", Music for Aardvarks and Other Mammals by David Weinstone
If you want to be a grump that's ok,
But could you be a grumpy kinda further away.
It's not that I don't love you,
Because you know I do,
Sometimes I'm grumpy too.
And if you want to be a nudge that's ok,
But could you be a nudgy kinda further away.
It's not that I don't love you,
Because you know I do,
Sometimes I'm nudgy too.
And I think I understand,
Exactly what it is you're going through,
Oh when your oatmeal's lumpy and your socks are all bumpy,
What's a poor kid to do?
And if you want to be a pesk that's ok,
But could you be a pesky kinda further away.
It's not that I don't love you,
Because you know I do,
Sometimes I'm pesky too.
And I think I understand,
Exactly what it is you're going through,
Oh when your oatmeal's lumpy and your socks are all bumpy,
What's a poor kid to do?
Oh if you want to be a grump that's ok,
But could you be a grumpy kinda further away.
It's not that I don't love you,
Because you know I do,
Sometimes I'm grumpy too.
Now if that doesn't sum up this week nothing does! ;o)

The End Is Nigh
At 8 o'clock in the morning this is already the worst day we've had since Jamison has been gone! Alexis awoke around 6:20 and immediately started crying and that's pretty much what it's been like since then, except for the little while she talked to Jamison on the phone before he had to get ready for his day, but when he had to go that just made her even more mad about the whole situation!
Jamison is supposed to arrive early this evening back in Maryland, and truth be told that time can't come soon enough! Alexis is currently in the bathtub, with no water, refusing to get out. I gave her a bath this morning because she didn't get one last night because of her fits and she won't get one tonight because we need to go pick up Jamison, though at the rate she's going Jamison may be taking a cab home from the airport, we'll see how things go as the day progresses!
Anyway, she didn't want to get into the tub, and now she doesn't want to get out! Instead she'd rather lay there and cry and bemoan the fact that her life sucks. And rest assured I'm well aware it sucks, but come on kid! Crying isn't making it any easier on any of us! She sticks her head up every once in a while to make sure I'm grasping the suckitude of her situation. I ask her if she's ready to get out and she disappears back over the side to cry some more and then repeats the whole situation! It's the most pitiful cry you've ever heard in all of your life! And of course she throws in the "Help me! Help me!" crap along the way. I can just imagine what someone would think if they heard the whole situation. I'm sure it would involve me being mean to her and being a horrible mother, but oh well.
So I sit here on the edge of my bed watching and listening and I pray that she snaps out of this soon! I have a feeling when Jamison gets home it will go one of two ways...1) She'll immediately be happy and that will be the end of that or 2) She gets worse to punish him for leaving. I'm afraid I fear the latter, but I guess we'll see all too soon. Regardless once Jamison gets home I'm having a big old Lemon Drop! I've more than earned one!

Dianne, is it possible she is sick? I don't know how you would manage to take her temp but ear infections or cutting molars could really make her miserable. If not then just ignore her, ha easy for me to say here in Ar. right. As long as she doesn't get attention maybe it won't be worth it to keep up her fits. Doesn't have to be positive atention, just any kind. In the meantime I will say a little prayer for you!
Posted by: Pat J. at July 14, 2006 12:06 PM
She's not sick, she's just mad! She doesn't like being away from Jamison and believe me I don't encourage her fits. I ignore her for the most part when they are happening, especially when we are at home. She is just a very persistent, very stubborn little creature!

It's Going To Be A Long Night
Oh My! Alexis is beside herself. She's had a rough day, followed by an even rougher evening. I was making her clean up before we came upstairs, which we do most nights, and she just had a meltdown! She refused to finish the job, to which I informed her she could do it now or do it in the morning, it didn't make a difference, but she would finish picking up her coins! She actually fell asleep on the floor, which is not something Alexis ever does, while avoiding picking up the coins, and she woke up to start screaming as we came upstairs and proceeded to scream for 30 minutes non-stop before I finally went into her room to get her because I couldn't take it anymore! That doesn't bode well for the rest of the evening! She should have been asleep about an hour ago, given she didn't take a nap, but she's currently sitting next to me on my bed and she says she's sleeping with me. I'll believe that when I see it, given she's not a sleep with you kind of kid. More likely I'll fall asleep and she'll start climbing on me. It's going to be a long night!

So Excited
Alexis has the potty down so pat you don't even have to ask her if she needs to go anymore. If she needs to go, she goes in and does her thing and then tells you about it after the fact through her grand celebration of having gone to the potty! The thing is, after the 50 millionth time you've done it, and you've done it so well, it's hard to have a celebration every time you go to the potty...Or at least it is on my part! Alexis is fully ready to celebrate and dance around each and every time she goes.
On a funny/weird note, the kid has superior bladder control! Seriously, I've seen adults that don't have the bladder control this kid has! She refuses to go to the bathroom when she's out in public. Maybe it intimidates her, or maybe she just doesn't think it should be done...Who knows? But she never has an accident. She always holds it until she gets home. She amuses me something with her idiosyncrasies, but then again we all have them I guess. I'm just glad her bladder appears to be made of steel!

She's Over It...
Can you tell? She told the lady at the fabric store that "Texas is dead" whatever that means. Thank goodness Jamison comes home tomorrow! Of course we get to repeat the drama in two weeks when he goes to Pittsburgh overnight, but at least that won't be as long of a trip! I'm not sure this is what I signed on for! ;o)

It's Official...She's Grumpy!!
It's official...Alexis is grumpy! And I'm not talking about your average, kind of grumpy young girl, I'm talking all out, hell on wheels, she doesn't like the situation, G-R-U-M-P-Y and she's not afraid to let you know she's not happy with the situation!!!
It's hard to believe by looking at her that this child is ever grumpy, but oh my!
It all started at Arundel Mills. At first it was just your run of the mill kid whining, which is annoying in and of itself, but you can work with that, and usually make it subside. I told her if she stopped whining I'd get her a cookie and that seemed to work for a bit, but not for long!
We stopped in to get her a map puzzle so she could see where Jamison was in terms of where she was. We have a big piece of fleece that has a US map on it, but she gets frustrated with it because she wants it to stay flat when she picks it up and of course a big piece of fleece is like a blanket and it just folds up. So we got her the puzzle and she wanted it to ride in her stroller, which was no big deal, but then suddenly she decided she wanted to change direction and go back in the direction we came from, and I explained to her that that wouldn't work given the cookie place was up ahead and from that point on things were no holds barred on her part...She went into out and out Super Grump Mode, complete with kicking, screaming and the dreaded "Help me! Help me!" crap!! So I scooped her up and put her into her stroller, which did not go over well, buckled her in and we tore off toward our car. Now keep in mind you're always on the opposite side of the mall than where you want to be when something like this happens. That's just how it works when your child is embarrassing the living daylights out of you!
On the way to the car we made one stop to get a blue striped hat I had seen that I wanted for the beach and they just happened to have it on sale for 75% off! I figured after putting up with her antics all morning long the least Jamison could do was buy me a pretty hat for the beach! ;o)
Doesn't that hat just scream sun and sand?? Thanks honey! ;o)
Anyway, after that I put the Screechy Peachy one in the car and we came home. She is currently in her room for her nap and let's hope she takes one, because she desperately needs one, though I'm positive most of her grumpiness has nothing to do with sleep and more to do with her general displeasure with Jamison's absence!!
When we got home I got her out of her car seat and sent her to the porch, and of course she didn't want to go and she started pitching another fit, so I had to use the Mommy voice, which never goes over well. And then once we got inside the whining just finally made me snap!
"For the love of God Alexis, stop whining and do the right thing!!!"
*Blink, Blink* "I don't know what you are saying Mommy. What does God have to do with whining?"
"Just...Stop....NOW!!!"
"But Mommy. I don't know what you are saying. Does God whine too?"
I just keep telling myself Friday is almost here....Friday is almost here! I really don't know how people do this in and out every day on their own. My hat goes off to you! Alexis is in such a state with Jamison being gone that I'm at my wits end! And taking her places to make the time go faster obviously isn't going to work, because as long as she's pitching duck fits I'm not taking her sorry little butt out in public!
I thought about letting her swim this afternoon, but the mosquitoes are horrible and she would be eaten alive! Maybe I'll look up the pool's schedule and see what it looks like, though that would involve going out in public and right now I'm not sure that she is fit for public consumption!
Is it Friday yet?

Slightly Grumpy, But Done!
Today was slightly grumpy, but thank goodness it's done! Alexis is in bed asleep, given she didn't have a nap, it was an early night and I plan on being in bed by 9 myself. I'm exhausted!!
Anyway, Alexis was a bit clingier than usual today, but that's to be expected too. She misses Jamison and though she realizes he's in Texas and we've explained why, I don't think she quite gets it, but she got to talk to him for a little while before she went to bed, so that was good too. But today is done! Woo hoo!!

Airport "Fun"
Right about now Jamison is boarding his delayed flight (or should be anyway) to Dallas. Alexis had never actually been in to the airport before, and I was very shocked at how much different it looked due to renovations since the last time I had been there myself!
We took Alexis up the observation lounge and I snapped a few pictures of Alexis and Jamison in the "plane" with my camera phone, thus the lack of quality.
So far Alexis doesn't understand the whole situation. I think she expects Jamison to walk around the corner at any moment. Given that this is the first time she's been away from him overnight ever, I guess that's to be expected. We came home, had some dinner, gave her a bath and now she's watching Pooh's Grand Adventure and will be heading to bed sometime soon.
Tonight can go one of two ways...1) She sleeps through the night and is mad as all get out in the morning when she discovers Jamison isn't here or 2) She wakes up through out the night trying to figure out where he is and gets mad then too. I'm hoping #1 will happen. We'll see.
So for now, as far as Alexis and I are concerned Dallas sucks. And I'm pretty sure if you asked Jamison he would tell you the exact same thing.

Leaving On A Jet Plane
I came out of the bathroom to find this:
"What are you doing in there?!!?!?"
"I go to Texas with Daddy on the plane!"
"That would be a bumpy ride!"
"What are you saying Mama?"
"Nothing...Nothing at all!"
This so is not going to go over well with her when we drop him off at the airport late this afternoon! It's going to be a long 4 days. I just keep telling myself 4 nights and then we'll pick him up on Friday evening...3 nights and then we'll pick him on on Friday evening...4 nights and then we'll pick him on on Friday evening! Please let the time pass quickly!

The Drama Meter Is On High Today!
Alexis hasn't had a nap since Thursday. And she hasn't slept well at night since then either, because of lack of sleep is a vicious cycle. Consequently her drama meter is on high and I mean HIGH! I'm telling you, teenagers have NOTHING on this kid!!
"Mommy where did Daddy go?"
"He went outside to mow the grass."
"Oh Mommy! The grass! It's so sad! I miss Daddy!"
"He's outside! He'll be back inside as soon as he finishes mowing the grass!"
"I don't know Mommy. He's so far away!"
If she thinks the front yard is far away, what's the kid going to do when he's in Texas next week?!!?!
It's going to be an early night for little miss Drama Queen. She won't be happy about it, but then again with all the drama, who would expect her to be!

What Do You Do On A Rainy Day?
Why jump in puddles of course! Our ground is still saturated from the rains last week, so when we had some rain today it immediately made inviting little puddles in our backyard, perfect for jumping in! And Alexis did just that!
Click on the extended entry below to see how to have some puddle fun!
First you splash a little with your feet:
Then you do a little dance:
Then you pause to look cute:
Then you look cute some more just for good measure:
And last you just jump right in...Feet, hands and all!
And that's how you have rainy day puddle fun! :o)

Tanyetta, Jamison's dad is a Vietnam vet and I have a friend who just got back from Iraq and one that is going to the Gulf in October so I take harsh comments a bit on the personal side. I think it's one thing to disagree with the war in Iraq, but it's another thing all together to disrespect hard working, honest soldiers who work hard to protect our country. I admire you husband for his hard work and I thank him for his service. :o)

We're babysitting Charlie while Amber and her family go on an overnight trip. So far, so good. Alexis is beside herself with glee, but they are getting along ok. Alexis chases him, he hides, then he comes out and bats at her feet and then she chases him, and then he hides....Well you get the picture. Three Year Checkup
Alexis had her three year check up this morning and everything went swimmingly! The doctor said that Alexis was well ahead of the curve, which I'm sure they say to all parents, but it made me happy none the less! She did seem to be very impressed with Alexis' letter, number and color skills. She also was impressed with her drawing of faces and the fact that she's potty trained. She's in the 90th percentile for height at 29 39.5 inches and in the 70th percentile for weight. And the great part about this visit was there were no shots! Yeah for no shots! I can't handle them, so Jamison has to come along and do that part of the visit when they do occur. I can't stand seeing a needle go into anyone, let alone my darling little girl! Alexis did a very good job so she was rewarded with a new bear, a new Veggie Tales DVD and lunch with Jamison. Other than the fact she didn't take a nap, it's been a very good day! :o)
Update: That was a typo on Alexis' height. It should be 39.5 inches tall instead of 29. Thanks to Jamison for catching my mistake! :O)

Now How Did She Do That?
Alexis was upstairs driving me nuts clinging to me, so I told her to go play in the basement and surprisingly she went with no fuss. I could hear her happily playing and singing before she ventured back upstairs about 40 minutes later. There was no silence, no crying, which usually indicate she's up to something, just happy playing noises, but when she got back upstairs she now has two little nasty scratches on her right cheek. I asked her what happened and she looked at me like I was nuts and said "I don't know what you're saying Mommy!" Which usually in Alexis speak means she's up to something and she wants you to think she doesn't understand what you're asking her, because she thinks that way she won't get in trouble. So I checked downstairs and nothing is out of place and nothing idicates she did anything that was face scratch worthy, so how in the world did she scratch her face and not know it happened?!!?!? Or if she knew how it happened what the heck was she doing that she doesn't want me to know about? Whatever it was it must not have hurt that much or I would have heard about it!

The Beginnings of a Fairy Ring
With the rain came the mushrooms as well, and I can handle the mushrooms! In fact we've got the beginnings of a Fairy Ring! It's starting to arc and everything!
Never heard of a Fairy Ring? Check it out here. They play heavily into Celtic mythology and into Fairy culture.

My First Play Dough
Today I let Alexis play with play dough for the first time and as you can see she tackled it with as much intensity as she does everything else!
I let her pick which color she wanted to open and she chose orange. She loves squishing it and taking it in and out of the container! I think I've found a new way to keep her occupied for a little bit! ;o)

Click on the extended entry below to see what she got! She's absolutely thrilled! :o)
A Ballerina Bunny
And an insulated lunch tote! Alexis calls it her "purse"!
"Where are you going?"
"I'm going to see Darwene! I wike Darwene...She's sweet!"
She is currently carrying them both around with her everywhere she goes! Thanks Aunt Dar! It's a big hit! :o)

Garden Update: We Have Veggies!
With all this rain the garden has been growing like gangbusters! The cucumber vines have sprouted a foot since the rain started! The tomato plants have done the same! And we've gotten our first ripe tomato and zucchini! In fact Alexis insisted on eating the tomato for breakfast!
Click on the extended entry below to see some zucchini and tomato pictures. I'll post a most in depth garden update later in the week! :o)
The lemon is just there for perspective...I didn't actually grow the lemon! :o)
And here's the tomato:
And another shot of Alexis enjoying her tomato!
I love it when it's time to harvest your own veggies! :O)

Our main crop this week has been weeds. Those and grass. By the time it stops raining we may need a scythe instead of a mower.

The sun is momentarily shining here right now, but from the looks of the radar that won't last long.
Our grass is growing like ganbusters too! I'm hoping it will start spreading into the bare areas faster, which it has started to do! :o)

I was out cruising the net, I was thinking of doing a short film and so I typed the word "beautiful" into the google field for images. I came across a picture of yours and then got hooked into looking at the whole site. Your children are adorable and your photography is in some cases stunning. Thank you for putting these up. Very sweet.

Alexis Takes a "Nap"
I was listening to Alexis sing and talk through the baby monitor instead of napping and when it was almost time for her to get up she started the fake crying, which grates on my nerves so! I ignored it for a minute or two hoping it would stop and then she did stop and said most indignantly, "I'm crying in here!" Now that cracked me up and I started to laugh. Then she said, "Mommy, I so cry! Can't you hear me?"
The kid is funny...But she still needed a nap! ;o)

Could it be time to get rid of the baby monitor? Now that she has become aware of it and understands its function to a level that she is using it as a paging system for you.
Posted by: Royal at June 23, 2006 3:28 PM
That isn't an option. We sleep with the doors closed and the fans running, so if she got sick or something happened in the middle of the night we'd never know it, because she couldn't get out of her room.
And as for her understanding the baby monitor, she doesn't really. She just talks in general. For it to be a paging system we'd have to go to her everytime she says "Come here" and we don't. It doesn't work at her will, it works at ours.
There is no magic age to get rid of the monitor, it's simply a tool to help parents listen to their children.

Reflection
It's hard to believe, but tomorrow Alexis turns three! Three years...Wow! Some days it seems like just yesterday we brought her home, so tiny and sweet. Others it seems like it's been centuries! But through it all, despite the bad days here and there, life with Alexis has been an adventure! She continues to amaze me everyday! She's sweet, she's smart, she's loving and she's very intuitive to what goes on around her. We truly are blessed with her.
When I was pregnant with Alexis, I was not one of those "Oh my gosh! Pregnancy is so wonderful!" people. I was tired, I was cranky and I detested anyone looking at me or touching my stomach! I was more of the "Oh my gosh! Get this kid out of me already!" type people. I didn't like being pregnant, but I have to admit it was worth it when I heard that first little mad cry! She was not pleased that they were messing with her! She came into this world and Jamison took over. I was tired and he knew what to do, so he did it...I could see her and I knew she was alright and that was all I needed at the moment. That knowledge filled my heart and I knew Jamison was more than capable of doing what she needed. I had carried her for nine months and now he got to take care of her for a bit and he was ready, willing and able! He's an amazing father and has been since the minute she drew her first breath!
One of the things that I was adamant about was that we leave the hospital as soon as we could. We had discussed it with our OBGYN and she told us beforehand as long as Alexis and I were ok, we could leave the day she was born if we wanted to. I think she thought I'd change my mind, but I didn't. And when she finally came to see me late that afternoon I asked her if we could leave. Alexis was born just after 1 am and we headed home that same day around 6 pm that evening and I didn't regret it one bit! I just wanted to go home and take a shower and be in my own house, with my own things, in my own bed!
During the evening we realized that Alexis was having an adverse reaction to her formula when she hurled all over Jamison twice. And Jamison bless his heart stayed up with her that night and let me sleep. He was in contact with our pediatrician, who won major kudo points that night for reassuring him that everything was going to be ok, with both me and with him. And anyone that knows Jamison, knows that it's next to impossible to win him over that quickly! We ended up taking Alexis into their office the next morning and once we got her on the soy formula she was just peachy and we never had any other problems in that area.
Another thing that we instituted was a 2 week period where no one visited. Everyone told me "You'll want someone there to help you take care of the baby!" to which I always responded "That's why Jamison has two weeks off from work!" Jamison and I both had a lot of experience with babies before Alexis came along and I knew myself well enough to know that I did not want anyone telling me what to do with my child, especially when you're still feeling icky from birth. When I'm not feeling well I get grumpy fast! And it's best just not to go down that path. Again, it was another decision we never regretted! It was nice to be just the three of us settling into a schedule before anyone descended upon us.
And now here we are three years later and Alexis has grown and changed so much! We've conquered potty training. We've gotten rid of her pacifier. We've transitioned to a big girl bed! She has left toddlerhood behind and is rapidly approaching being a little girl! What an adventure the past few years have been. Just think how much things will change in the next three!

"I Made Letters!"
"Mommy look...I made letters!" Alexis told me as I put the lasagna for dinner together.
"Wow Alexis! Good job!" I told her a bit amazed at what she had been doing right next to me while I wasn't looking at her.
"I know!" she told me very proudly.
"What do your letters say?"
"Dey say Mommy and Daddy and Wexis!" she told me very excitedly.
I've been working with Alexis on recognizing and writing her name lately. Through this process she realized that letters line up to spell words. I did not realize however that she had gotten the concept this well until she told me to look at her letters! She actually intuitively realized that the letters on the piece of paper were the same as the letters on her fridge magnets! Not bad at all! :o)
