Happy 50th Smurfs!
BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- The Smurfs -- led by Papa Smurf and Smurfette -- kicked off a year of 50th birthday celebrations Monday with Smurfberry cake and sasparilla juice. The late cartoonist Pierre Culliford -- best known by his pen name, "Peyo" -- first introduced the tiny blue figures in a comic strip in October 1958. He called them Schtroumpf; they became known worldwide as the Smurfs.
The Smurfs, forest dwellers who live in little white-capped mushroom homes, developed their own "Smurf" language in which nouns and verbs were interchanged.
Their debut on U.S. television in 1981 launched their global rise to stardom and made the Smurfs a household name. A Smurf is a Pitufo in Spanish, a Schlumpf in German, Nam Ching Ling to the Chinese, a Sumafa in Japan and Dardassim in Hebrew.
My sister and I used to watch the Smurfs every Saturday morning as children. Alexis and I have even caught the show a few times and she seems to like them too.
Happy Birthday Smurfs!

I was in the mood to google people I knew from UAH and Lo! I find Jamison. Maybe you don't remember me. But probably you do. I used to hang out with Chris Bond. Cindy Green and Kim Poll were my roommates. You might have been a little scared of me. No shame in that, as it is still a pretty common occurance. Would love to see a picture of your little girl. Mostly for comparison, I have a Catherine that is about two months older than yours. She's a feisty little red-headed queen of everything. Merry Christmas. Angel

Congratulations Mr. Gore!
(CNN) -- Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for their work raising awareness about global warming. The Nobel committee cited them "for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change."
"Through the scientific reports it has issued over the past two decades, the IPCC has created an ever-broader informed consensus about the connection between human activities and global warming," Ole Danbolt Mjoes, chairman of the Nobel committee, said in making the announcement.
"Thousands of scientists and officials from over 100 countries have collaborated to achieve greater certainty as to the scale of the warming."
The Nobel committee praised Gore as being "one of the world's leading environmentalist politicians."
He is probably the single individual who has done most to create greater worldwide understanding of the measures that need to be adopted," said Mjoes
Congratulations go out this morning to Mr. Gore! Keep up the good work sir!

Pretty! And thanks for the fix -- I don't think we're going to get much in the way of colors this autumn (if it ever arrives!) -- it's been too hot and, especially, very dry all summer. :-(

I was kind of surprised to see the color here myself. We've been in the 80's and 90's. It's way too hot to be fall! But I think we're supposed to get cooler in the next few days. Now if we could just get some rain!

Happy Third Blogaversary To Us!
Three years, 7,343 entries, 8,971 comments and several million visitors later we're still going strong! What started out as a way to share news about Alexis, discuss things that mattered to us and generally blow off steam, has evolved into what you see today, which some like and others don't, but as the years have passed I've learned that you can't please everyone 100% of the time and there is no point in trying. What you see is what you get. You have to be true to yourself and if people don't like you for who you are then it's their loss.
Anyway, all of this to say that over the past few years we've made some very good friends because of this blog (especially, but not limited to, Monica, Kathy, the folks over at Night Bird's Fountain, Ebony Mommy, Shana, Tanyetta, Qusan, Cheri and family, RedHat and London Southern Belle, as well as various non-blogging commenters, people we already knew, etc.) and I want each of you to know that we have really enjoyed getting to know you and hope to continue to get to know you more as the years go by!

Yesterday was Maryland Day!!!
Maryland Day is a legal holiday in the U.S. state of Maryland. It is observed on the anniversary of the March 25, 1634 landing of settlers in the Province of Maryland. On this day settlers from The Ark and The Dove first stepped foot onto Maryland soil, at St. Clement's Island in the Potomac River. The colony was granted to Cæcilius Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore two years prior by Charles I of England. In thanksgiving for the safe landing, Jesuit Father Andrew White celebrated mass for the colonists, perhaps for the first time ever in this part of the world. The landing coincided with the Feast of the Annunciation, a holy day honoring Mary, and the start of the new year in England's legal calendar (prior to 1752).
The holiday began in 1903, the date chosen by the state board of education to honor Maryland history. In 1916, the legislature authorized Maryland Day as a legal holiday (Chapter 633, Acts of 1916).
Well you learn something new everyday I guess. Usually these kinds of things would be covered in an elementary civics class, but I had Arkansas and Georgia Civics, I wasn't in school when I came to Maryland. I'm not sure what the appropriate celebration is for Maryland Day, somehow it seems a little ouster for drunken debauchery or anything fun like that. I suspect a moment of silence will suffice. ;)

Christmas Eve Conversation
After months of asking Alexis what she wanted Santa to bring her and her not telling me anything, I just got things I knew she would enjoy. I got her arty things and learning toys that I knew she would have fun playing with.
Then on Christmas Eve when I was putting her to bed she dropped the following hint:
"Mommy, in the morning when we open our presents Santa is going to leave me a Pirate patch in my stocking. He's going to leave you a Mommy Pirate patch in your stocking too!" she told me very excitedly.
"He is?" I asked all while my mind started kicking into gear on how I was going to come up with Pirate patches on Christmas Eve!
"Yes! Santa loves me!" she told me very certain of that fact.
"Yes he does," I assured her. "We'll see what he brings you in the morning."
So I put her to bed and I got to work making "Alexis and Mommy" pirate patches. It's amazing what you can do with a sewing machine, a manila folder and some elastic. If you have access to her Flickr photos then hop on over and see a picture of her with her patch. She was thrilled!
Luckily she asked me for something I could do at the last minute on Christmas Eve. I should be thankful she didn't ask me for something that Mommy Santa couldn't make, like say a castle or an airplane or such! ;o)

Yup... I'm excited!!! (ops sorry about that I didn't know the 1st one posted) I walk around singing 'it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas' and 'let it snow, let it snow, let it snow' but then again I'm torn between wanting it to snow and not. I want it to is the worse way... but then again not becasue I know I won't get to enjoy it with Marcus... he'll have to work in it. But I'm excited!

Gingerbread Ornaments
I finally got a chance to get the gingerbread ornaments painted this morning!
My favorites are the snowmen:
And of course the "Pissy" Gingerbread Men and Women:
What? You'd be pissy too if someone took a bite out of your head! ;o)
They all turned out cute! When Miss G gets up from her nap we'll put some ribbon on them and get them hung.
I'm off to string popcorn! :O)

Yeah It's Early And I'm A Stickler For Such Things, But There Is A Good Excuse In This Case
I usually put up my Christmas tree and decorate for Christmas on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, but this year I put it up before Thanksgiving even though I don't think you should do such things. Alexis and I spent the afternoon (or rather a couple of hours) decorating the tree so we can use it as a backdrop for the Alexis Papa "Santa" picture.
Hop on over to Flickr to see some pictures of Miss G and "her" tree! ;o)

Halloween From Years Gone By
Check out the pumpkin my grandfather carved back in the 80's. I asked my Mom to have my father scan it in for me so I could attempt one myself, but lost my nerve. Maybe next year! ;o)

Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday! To Me, Me, Me! ;o)
Thanks for all the birthday wishes yesterday! We are planning to set off on a few "Birthday" Adventures over the next few days, but we'll talk about that later. For now let's talk cake! Ice cream cake!
I had never had one before, so Jamison got me one and let me tell you I'm hooked! What's not to love? It's the best parts of cake and ice cream....You've got your ice cream and you've got your icing, and as far as I'm concerned the icing is the best part of the cake anyway and ice cream, well most people love ice cream! So you put the two together and voila...You have the perfect birthday cake!
So overall we had a nice dinner and some ice cream cake. Or at least Alexis and I did, since Jamison can't eat ice cream, but he hung out with us and that is all that counts. Check out Flickr for some pictures of me and Alexis with the cake. :O)
Now off to our "Birthday" Adventure for the day! More later. ;o)

I think this pretty much sums it up for me:
"My Friend, on Your Birthday,I Have So Many Wishes for You
I wish for you to have people to love,
people in your life who will care about you
as much as I do,
blue skies and clear days,
exciting things to do,
easy solutions to any problems,
knowledge to make the right decisions,
strength in your values,
laughter and fun,
goals to pursue,
happiness in all that you do.
My friend,
I wish for you to have
beautiful experiences each new day
as you follow your dreams."
-Poem by Susan Polis Schutz.
Happy Birthday Dianne!
