Heavy underdog Florida annihilates Ohio State 41-14

Yesterday, I received a lot of grief at work, because I said that Ohio State was going to get beat. I went on to say there was only one legitimate conference in the United States and it is the SEC. This morning yet again I am proven correct. You can't take someone who plays three real games a season and claim they are number one. Teams in the SEC are among the best in the nation and nearly every weekend the teams of the SEC go about trying to clobber each other. When you play against good teams a single bad play can turn a game without being a reflection on the quality of the team as a whole. Our records will always be worse than those who effectively spent 3/4's of their seasons running nothing more than televised scrimmages with the other bad teams in their conference. The best other conference record is equal maybe to a 7-4 season in the SEC. We've got to get rid of the BSC and move to a playoff arrangement in college football. That will clear up any confusion on who the real contenders are in the NCAA football once and for all.

Having said all that the Florida Gators are the most reviled team in the SEC, one of the best teams money can buy to boot. I was cheering for both teams to lose, I just hadn't figured out how to make that happen. What makes it worse is that their fans rival all the other worst fans in the SEC, they will be incorrigible today and I know like 10 of them. So I'm going to start taking headache medicine now.

I was with you for the first paragraph, but then you committed blasphemy.
Sinner! Florida is hated in the SEC for one reason, we win and win and win, even when we aren't supposed to, most of the time that is. You've been out of the South for too long. SEC football is the South.
Somebody needs to do a story about the millions in lost revenue from Ohio State "championship" t-shirts. Was thinking of getting one once they "fall of the truck" and put on the back..wait a second, Florida 41 OSU 14 or something like that.
Say what you want about Bush, but leave Florida alone....Gator Bait!

I guess I'm one of those "incorrigible Florida fans"..hehehe

It's a glorious day!

I know what you're thinking...Jamison is going to talk about the Democratic take over of the legislative branch and you would be absolutely wrong! While that's a very nice thing, because of the vile blue dogs and New Democrats, that's really not going to be a victory for me in the purest sense.

No ladies and gentlemen this is a glorious day for an entirely different set of reasons. The kind of things that transcends half hearted victories against the forces of darkness...No this is a glorious day because it is a clear demonstration that crosses party lines of a universal truth.

Notre Dame is now officially the most overrated team in college football! They suffered their 9th straight bowl loss last night to LSU. There is no other team in college football that gets more breaks and preseason hype in college football. Enough already! Yet every week, Notre Dame is given coverage as if this will be the game they rise to some previous glory that very few people who keep up with football can even remember anymore. It's over! Stop dreaming about it and get back to locker room, prehaps practice football for a little bit.

And to those moronic commentators from the Arkansas game. Arkansas tried three ways on Sunday to lose that game and that isn't reflection on the SEC. It's a reflection on the fact that Arkansas is a momentum team and as soon as they lose it they just make things worse. There are really only two football conferences in this country there is the SEC and what we'll lovingly refer too as the "others". One game will not change that reality in college football. The best teams in the country are in the SEC and on any given Saturday, anyone in the SEC can mop the floor with the best of the best in the "other" conferences. Our records are never as good because we play against real teams every week of the season rather than spending our time touring these backwater conferences and no name teams. I mean Troy State could have won that game that Arkansas flubbed, because they would have been serious about the game and came to play instead of to lose. In another couple of years Troy State will be kicking the butts on a regular basis of the "other" conferences.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we play football in the SEC, every other conference is about tailgating. End of story. End of discussion. Have a nice day!

Arkansas wins the SEC Western Division title

Honestly these are the games that teams in the SEC usually lose big time. They get their minds into the next game instead of playing the game they are at and they get beat. Actually Arkansas won a game earlier this year against Auburn because they were focused on winning the next weeks game against Florida and Arkansas came to play football today. Next week we get to take one the overrated LSU team on our way to Atlanta. But as my dad always says and is the ultimate truism about the SEC, on any given week any team can be a national champion. Where the other conferences have a small handful of decent teams, the SEC is cram packed full of great teams. Unfortunately we tend to suffer a lot of injuries and agonizingly close defeats, which causes our teams to always appear lower on the listings, where you have a Ohio State or Michigan that really only have one maybe two good teams in their conferences, so they are always fresh and untested against real teams.

I also want to give some words of encouragement to the crushed Bama fans that read the blog. I'll admit that I was cheering for Auburn because past indignities visited on Arkansas by Alabama. I'd normally say it has something to do with the obnoxious nature of the fans, but the reality SEC is filled with obnoxious fans for every team so there really isn't any that are much worse than the others. Actually strike that, Florida team fans are the worse, actually I think they are the reason that most of our fans have gotten so obnoxious. But next year, I promise I'll be neutral in Ironbowl game.

Well mostly I guess it would depend on who's loss in the Ironbowl would make for a more interesting SEC contest.

Freshman Mustain to start at QB for Arkansas

Stupid politics!! Who would schedule something so insignificant during the College Football season? On Saturday night as I was doing the political event, a lot of us were whispering about the new SEC season. Actually there were some Kansas folks there that didn't realize it wasn't really football unless SEC teams were playing, but hey it's a learning curve. ;) Evidently I didn't miss very much during the first real weekend of football. Arkansas got their butts handed to them by Southern California. In our defense we are in a rebuilding year or 5, actually I think Arkansas has been rebuilding since I was a little boy, but let's not get bogged down in the details of it. ;) They've got a new awesome freshman QB that's going to lead them to victory, bumping off their Junior QB that had trouble performing against Southern California. In his defense Southern California is actually ranked, so it's not like we were expecting to blow them out. We will be traveling during the next game when Mustain gets to start, so I won't see that game either.

On other teams, surprise, surprise Tennessee pulled off a victory against a higher ranked team. One of my buddies is a Texas fan and they blew out their opponent during their first game. Somehow Notre Dame is ranked again without any record to speak of, but that's been going on since I was a little boy as well, so no surprise there.
Alabama barely won their first game, so that doesn't bode well for their season. They've been terribly undermined since they had to start following to recruiting rules, I don't know if they are long for this world. ;p Vanderbilt had a good quarter against Michigan, which is always cause for celebration. Despite my disdain for the Florida teams, the scourge of decent SEC teams everywhere are still being allowed to play and of course they are all ranked for reasons that confound the imagination. They still have the best players money can buy and they've yet to punished for their bad behavior.

Texas Grabs No. 1 Rank After Rose Bowl Win

I've got to say something about this and I've been giggling about it all day. Let me first and foremost say I'm not a Texas fan at all. Texans have always worked very hard to get on my bad side, so it was really hard to support anything related to them, but USC had the biggest heads in College Football and it just had to end. Now I know what everyone is going to say about this, the third quarter bad call by the referees gave the game to Texas. Bad calls are what make College Football, so I don't want to hear any of that talk. I mean look at any Alabama game and you'll see a hundred bad calls and a clear explanation of their "comeback" season. I mean how did they make it into the top 10??? Sacrilege!!! Does Penn State play football in America?? How did they get in the top 5?? I've never heard of them playing a real team. Sort of like TCU? Do they play in America? Someone should check these teams that are playing these made up schools that no one has ever heard of and how they are getting into the national rankings. It's so annoying all the fake conferences. If you're not playing SEC teams how do you know if your any good? Per our normal a 1/3 of the top 15 are SEC teams. Now if we could only get a playoff system in place the College football would be even more interesting.

Iron Bowl

I was going to ask America again to help Alabama's opponents again today. But I decided to watch the first 10 minutes of the game before I said anything. Wow! I knew Alabama's team was nothing more than a momentum team, much like most of the teams in the SEC, but this is ridiculous! I don't think I've seen a team in such a state of self destruction in my life.

Not the Good Old Days

Someone sent me a link to a news story about a couple of UT football players legal woes in light of a fight they participated in at a fraternity party. I hadn't heard about it and I had the startling realization (well, maybe not startling) that I couldn't give a rats ear about UT football anymore. This has been coming on for years now I guess. Each year I feel more and more disconnected from the old thrill of watching the UT football games and each year I end up watching fewer and fewer of them, to the point where I am now that I don't care one way or the other. It's just not thrilling to me anymore. You have a bunch of spoiled brat athletes (well most of them anyway) who think they can literally get away with murder because they play football and the Vols rule! They think they are above everyone else because they are put up on a pedestal. It's really quite disgusting when you think about it. So this football season I probably won't watch any of the games at all because I can think of better things to be doing with my time. If I catch a score here and there that's cool, but I have to say I think my UT football days are over. Who would have thought?

Tennessee's Recruiting Class Among Best

I audibly sighed at reading the headline. I can already predict that this year's college football season is going to be intolerable. So I decided to make sure that we wouldn't be at odds at least until the SEC championship or so. And low and behold when I pulled up the Tennessee 2005 schedule what do I see listed as if it were guaranteed to happen, the SEC championship game! It's a blatant slap in the face of the toughest conference on the planet! I confronted my wife and her sorry excuse was that everyone put it on their schedule, it was just a marker. So I checked Arkansas, LSU, Alabama, Georgia, Florida State, Gators, Auburn, and Ole Miss. None of them had it on their schedule. Seven months till the season starts and they are already talking trash.

Questionning this is like me asking you if you are going to praise TiVo, or order your own "special" pizza...or watch Tech TV? Which I would never ask, because I know you're going to do those things. Some things are as inevitable as breathing...like the Vols and playoffs. Why fight it? Come over to the Dark Side.

Posted by: Darlene at February 3, 2005 3:31 PM

I don't watch Tech TV anymore. Comcast bought them and I haven't been back since.

But there is nothing special about the Vols that gives them the right to think they are going to SEC championships, they just aren't that good a team.

The only way you'll hear me cheering for Tennessee is if the other team is from Florida. And then it will be half hearted at best. Actually I'm getting to the point where I'm going to start thinking of Tennessee as the Northern most Florida team in the SEC.

Posted by: ManDrake at February 3, 2005 3:55 PM

Oh no. You've become one of THOSE people...the kind of person who you could tell them the sky is blue and they'd say you are wrong...the kinda person who wants to be different just for difference sake. You're wife loves the Vols...so you gotta hate them...with no real justification behind your fascade. I've had brief glimpses that you were headed in this direction, but alas, I had thought better of you. ;0)

Posted by: darlene at February 4, 2005 8:51 AM

Actually I am getting less and less into UT football as the years go by. This season I missed a lot of games, which I could have watched, but choose not to. I did see some of them though. Jamison's always been an Arkansas fan. Since he grew up there I can't fault him for that. :o)

Now the Bama fans in my family are just insane! But that's a story for another day! ;oP

Posted by: Dianne at February 4, 2005 9:20 AM

I'm sorry I was raised to appreciate well played college football where the teams were basically evenly matched. Where games were decided by heart of the players, spurred on by the fans. The notion that games go the highest bidder so to speak and that you basically have nothing but a handful of great teams that do nothing by beat everyone until they run into another well paid team, meaning you get a couple of decent football games a season, just doesn't appeal to me. What makes the SEC great is that on any given day any teams in the conference could beat any other team. That's what makes it the best one. It's not the optimizing your stadium structure to increase noise levels to deafen visiting teams. It's not recruiting the best players from other states to make a dream team. It's about playing football, running the trick play, and developing skills. I know alien concepts to people that just want to win, but it's why I'm different.

Posted by: ManDrake at February 4, 2005 9:39 AM

Anyone seen the new issue of Lindy's SEC Football? You must have, I have it in Iraq for Pete's sake. Gators are picked to win the SEC East and SEC. Will UT or South Carolina have any players not in jail for the season opener?

AP drops poll from BCS mix

Well it's about time. I can think of few more broken things in Football than the BCS. It has become readily apparent to even the most simple minded fans that the BCS is nothing but a scam to ensure that select schools always end up in a bowl game no matter their playing record. It's time to scrap the BCS and fire anyone that supports it. We need a play off series in college football like every other damn sport on the planet, no matter how much the BCS people are managing to steal by making these back door deals. The notion that an undefeated team from the SEC wouldn't get a shot at the title goes beyond a travesty of justice, and travels rapidly towards a crime against humanity. No sane minded organization should associate themselves with the BCS or their broken system.

SEC, ACC to review tapes of Clemson-South Carolina fight

Personally I blame this all on Spurrier, just the idea that he's coming to South Carolina has debased the players so much that they are starting to emulate Florida teams style of play. I'm told by old school Gator's fans that Spurrier spends more time on the golf course than coaching, that it's really just the nature of the recruiting in Florida schools that builds the great teams. For those of you that don't follow the SEC, recruiting violations are pretty much the standard conference wide, but Florida teams have taken it from an idea to an art form. So depending on the year, some percentage of the conference is in trouble for some violation or another. And depending on who tells on whomever else, arrest warrants are issued by the opposing team to have them thrown in jail. It's just the nature of the game in the SEC. Which is also why we have some of the best football teams in the nation, mind you every team in the SEC is a momentum team, which means a single mistake turns them into a glorified bunch of paper weights, but if they ever actually played up to their potential they would easily rival or surpass any of the so called "pro" teams. I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts that we will see some hand slapping and this event will be forgotten.

Holtz to Retire, Clearing Way for Spurrier

Spurrier is the living embodiment of the kind of people that shouldn't be coaching football! He's so obsessed with winning that he will destroy any number of players in the process. While this kind of attitude is great in Florida, I don't think the rest of the country shares that cutthroat, throw away the kids attitude that he's used to. He doesn't have what it takes to coach in the NFL because let's face it those guys get paid and therefore have to think about their futures. So when he tells them to go throw away their lives they just have to laugh at him. South Carolina would be much better off if it found the worst coach in college football and gave him the job than to let a cancerous monster like Spurrier into their program.

Could this be fear because South Carolina is suddenly going to start winning the SEC? ;)

I was surprised that he took the job there, especially since he'll be coaching against his former team and alma mater. For the record, I think he's a jerk as well. ;)

Posted by: InsaneIdiot at November 20, 2004 7:50 AM

I have to weigh-in on this one. While in the past I would have agreed, whole heartedly that Spurrier (or "Coach Superior" as we liked to call him) embodied everything that was wrong about college football, I think there are at least a few indications that being such a looser in the NFL has humbled the man. What do you think? When first asked about the Florida coaching position right after they fired Zook, he responded to a reporter, "I don't think it's appropriate for me to comment about that right now. It's not something we need to discuss." Then, a few weeks later (WAY before anyone was REALLY talking about the USC job) when he was asked if he would consider coaching there, his reply was (something to the effect of, not a direct quote), "Last time I checked, that job wasn't open."

(4) Auburn 38, Arkansas 20

Well we showed up to play 2 quarters again, against an SEC team, and we promptly got our butts handed to us. I'm not sure what the game plan was going into this game, but it was terrible. Personally I think this is the problem with having seniors on the team at all. They tend to get lazy and unmotivated much more quickly than the younger guys. It's only when they are losing by a lot that they decide to start paying attention to the game. To be beat by a no-name team like Auburn is a major embarrassment. And it's not like Auburn was playing fundamentally better football, they were just playing football while Arkansas was going through the motions.

I really can't comment much since Penn State has really gone downhill, but to say that the number 4 ranked team in the nation is a no-name? Face it, Arkansas is looking like the doormat of the SEC.

Posted by: InsaneIdiot at October 18, 2004 8:04 PM

Dianne mentioned this morning that we may be the doormat, but at least we aren't Ole Miss. I checked it out, and actually even Ole Miss is doing better than us this year. Only Mississippi State is doing worse in the SEC West, and Kentucky in SEC East. It's grim dark days to say the least.

As for the team rankings, the BCS is a joke there is no way to take their rankings seriously. We need to go to playoff setup so that we can actually see who the decent teams actually are.

Posted by: ManDrake at October 19, 2004 10:35 AM

You're not kidding about grim, dark days. I still can't believe Penn State has fallen into irrelevance.

It's hard to believe that all the bowl owners greed gets to override good sense and greater ticket sales. It's like they can't see the dollars for all the dollars kind of problem. Maybe we need to get a new commissioner or something to get the NCAA on the right track. What's happening now is a travesty of justice to say the least.

Now normally I wouldn't even speak of the Big Ten, but I know Tom and Miguel are partial to them and when I saw the score I knew they would be hurting today. I think this paragraph covers everything that needs to be said on the subject really:

"The loss was costly for the Nittany Lions (2-2, 0-1), who lost their top two offensive weapons in the first quarter when quarterback Zack Mills injured his right shoulder on Penn State's first series and his replacement, multitalented Michael Robinson, suffered a concussion."

Ouch! That's actually worse than what happened to Alabama. Maybe next year guys, keep your chins up.

Posted by: ManDrake at September 26, 2004 9:07 AM

My boss is a Gator's fan and he told me that they had the same problem 5 or 6 years ago and they went on to a winning season. So maybe there is some hope for your team after all. Of course, Florida teams cheat a lot more than your average football teams, so it might not be as easy for Penn State to pull it off fairly.

Posted by: ManDrake at September 27, 2004 12:58 PM

Speaking of cheating...what was up with that horrible call in the 4th quarter of the Tennessee/Gator game?

Posted by: InsaneIdiot at September 27, 2004 1:00 PM

I was asleep at the time, so I only know what was in the recap on Yahoo. What call? And was it for or against Florida, because determines how bad a call it was. ;)

Posted by: Dianne at September 27, 2004 1:14 PM

It turns out that a Tennesse player slapped a Gator upside the head. Then the Gator retaliated and slapped the Tennessee player. One of the referees watched both players do this, but the Gators were the one who were penalized. This allowed Tennessee great field position for their last second field goal. It's a shame you didn't watch the game...it was a good game. :)

Posted by: InsaneIdiot at September 27, 2004 1:51 PM

Arkansas 27, Alabama 10

Well Arkansas won, which is not surprising given Alabama's problems this season. My real issue had to be that Alabama trots out an untested quarterback and Arkansas didn't start blitzing him until 4th quarter! It's a tradition in the SEC to welcome a new quarterback to the SEC by making him eat dirt for his first game! You know the standard welcome to the SEC, we actually play football here, if you're not ready to play yet go to some other conference, hello. Instead they allow Alabama to rush unopposed for 3 quarters without even trying to silence the source of the problem. I was so disappointed in Arkansas' performance, it was pitiful, Alabama is a no name team with a rank amateur as coach. Does anyone really think they can take that kind of game to the Gators and expect to win next week? Someone needs to wake up in Fayetteville and get focused on winning real football games instead of goofing off for 2 quarters of the game.

hahaha... Olivia has an official Razorback cheerleader outfit that i have to take her to JCpenny to get her pixes in! LOL

Posted by: ellen at September 26, 2004 5:41 PM

I want to get a UT cheerleader outfit for Alexis. Jamison's dad got her some new Arkansas stuff when he was there last week that they'll bring up with them at Thanksgiving.

I've got a fairy flower costume that is her "Halloween" costume that I am going to take her to have her picture taken in.

Posted by: Dianne at September 26, 2004 5:45 PM

Hehe, you may have to "create" an outfit where the right side is Arkansas and the left is Tennessee. I believe that's what Bobby Bowden's wife does when Clemson plays FSU.

Posted by: InsaneIdiot at September 27, 2004 5:35 PM

OK you guys! It is Wooooo Pig Sooie!

Olivia's Arkansas Grandma!

Posted by: Pat Johnson at September 30, 2004 5:17 PM

LOL Jamison wouldn't tell me how to spell it right!! LOL He grew up in Arkansas. Usually it's a big rivalry at our house between Arkansas and Tennessee but since they don't play each other this year it works out nicely. :O)

Posted by: Dianne at September 30, 2004 6:20 PM

Well if we squash the Gators their might be an issue, because Arkansas will up for the national championship. Then all bets are off. ;)

Posted by: ManDrake at October 1, 2004 11:08 AM

Oh please...they aren't even ranked! LOL But I'm all for you beating the Gators. I'm all for anyone beating the Gators...unless it's Bama then I don't want either of them to win! LOL :O)

Posted by: Dianne at October 1, 2004 11:10 AM

Okay you folks, what is the origin of the word
Sooie, sooey, etc.?

Posted by: Richard at April 17, 2005 5:08 PM

I've heard it all my life, never really considered the source of the word before. It's how you call pigs in the South. I don't know that it's a real word or not.

If it doesn't let me know, and Grandpa will get one next week when he is in Batesville, Great Aunt Ruth will get one this week, or if its an emergency we will send Jason to West Memphis to get one today. If that doesn't work, I will go get her one. Can't have the Razorbacks under represented next the Smokey. Love the Overalls. Maybe I can find her some Razorback Red ones.

Hopefully we'll get some respect when the rankings come out next week. I mean second rate hacks like LSU are top 10 but they can't crush an unranked team? I mean even a second rate team like Alabama can beat an unranked team, they aren't an Arkansas level team, but at least they can show up to the game and do a little work. Even Tom's little Penn State team won against an unranked team. So basically everyone is better than LSU.

Posted by: ManDrake at September 5, 2004 3:12 PM

The t-shirt fits. It's actually still a little big so she's set on Razorback gear for a while. :o)

Tennessee VS. UNLV

For some reason UT's football game with UNLV is on Sunday instead of Saturday. I don't remember a Sunday game since before I was at UT.

Check out UT's football page for all the details.

I'll have a picture up on Sunday of Alexis in her UT duds. Go Vols!!

That's because Booms Day is Saturday. So they put the game on Sunday. Can you imagine the crowd and the parking if both of them had been going on at the same time?!?!?!

Posted by: DARLENE at September 3, 2004 2:53 PM

When did they switch Boom's Day to Saturday??? They used to have it on Labor Day, Monday evening. Everything is going to hell in a hand basket! LOL

Doesn't look good for Tennessee or Arkansas. ;)

Posted by: InsaneIdiot at August 19, 2004 12:51 AM

I'm not going to lose sleep over it to be sure. When I hear that there are only 4 returning starters, I hear the losers that we had last year are gone. Trust me, our team needed some new blood that's for sure. Our QB is pretty good, but I have to say I was disappointed in his stats, because Arkansas usually plays about 2 or 3 Overtimes every couple of weeks. He should have much better numbers than that.

Football Season is almost here!!

I must say I am VERY thankful that UT FINALLY got rid of Pickle Boy (Casey Klausen for those of you out there that wonder who the heck I'm talking about!) I don't know who he paid or how much he paid to be on the team but he sucked! Big time! Thank God he's gone! Unfortunately one of the names being bantered about for starting quarterback is Casey's little brother Rick, but fortunately Rick is a MUCH better player asleep than Casey ever thought about being awake! But fifth-year senior C.J. Leak appears to have the inside track on the starting job. I like him. The times I've seen him play I was very impressed. He's not the type to freak out when they start coming for him. He can tuck the ball and run instead of falling to the ground like pretty Pickle Boy Clausen screaming, "Oh my God they're going to hit me! Not the face! Not the face!" We also have some key returners such as T Michael Muņoz (Sr.), RB Cedric Houston (Sr.), LB Kevin Simon (Jr.), LB Kevin Burnett (Sr.), and P Dustin Colquitt (Sr.)

Anyway, check out the Sports Illustrated write up here or the official site here.

Yea, football season! Penn State fight songs, College Gameday on ESPN, Fantasy Football and the Tampa Bay Bucs...it's the most wonderful time of the year!

Posted by: InsaneIdiot at August 12, 2004 11:45 AM

Penn State is higher ranked than Arkansas?? Are they nuts, I had never heard of Penn State before Miguel started whining about them. Arkansas was 9-4 in a serious conference last year, Penn State was in a no name conference and still had a 3-9 season. It's a joke the rating system they use. What's really offensive of course is that all three Florida teams are in the top 10. I mean look at their records 10-3, 8-5, and 11-2. I mean it's hard to take that seriously when you give them 9, 6, and 5 place respectively off of those kinds of records in joke conferences that they are in. I mean let's have a reality check here, they aren't that good. Arkansas doesn't play Tennesse this year, so that will probably be good for family peace, well we might have to beat them in the playoffs, but we'll burn that bridge when we get to it.

Posted by: ManDrake at August 12, 2004 12:54 PM

I agree that the rating system sucks, but I find it hard to believe you've never heard of Penn State! That is just wrong on so many levels. You've never heard of head coach Joe Paterno? The coach with the 2nd (and soon to be 1st) most wins in division 1A football, having passed Bear Bryant a couple of years ago! By the way, I'm cheering my team, not whining about them (even if their record has been bad the past few years).

The Big Ten conference is a no name? There were more Big Ten teams in bowl games than there were SEC teams, although I will say that the SEC won 2 out of the 3 games played against the Big Ten. Also, I noticed that Arkansas LOST to the Gators! LOL!!! (Is friendly trash talk allowed for football?)

Posted by: InsaneIdiot at August 12, 2004 1:21 PM

No name conference?! Take a look at your top 25: Numbers 8, 12, 15 and 23 are all Big Ten. If you look further, 26 and 28 are Big Ten also. That's more than half the conference in the top 30! Penn State plays 4 of these teams this year, all in a row.

Miguel and I were at the 1994 Citrus Bowl where there were about 75% Tennessee fans. The overwhelming chants of Rocky Top sure went away as PSU walloped UT 31-13. A good day, I'd say.

As for PSU's recent past: Lisa and I went on our honeymoon in 1999 when the Nittany Lions were 9-0, and prepped for a National Championship run. When we got back, they were 9-3, and were lucky to get into the Alamo Bowl. It's been a rough 5 years since then...

Posted by: Tom M. at August 12, 2004 1:27 PM

Is there anything but friendly trash talk in football discussions? It's not like anything we say could effect the outcome, no matter how much we yell at the TV. ;)

So what I'm hearing from you Tom is that when you got married your team started lossing and hasn't stopped since. Sounds to me like you caused a curse on your team. ;)

Posted by: ManDrake at August 12, 2004 2:41 PM

You know, I chalk it up to cosmic balance. I definitely married above myself, so the karma is working against my alma mater! :)

Posted by: Tom M. at August 12, 2004 4:10 PM

And who was it that won the the 1999 National Championship???? That's right....FLORIDA STATE!!!!!

Posted by: Wendi at August 12, 2004 4:27 PM

Cheap shot, Wendi - I would have liked a PSU/FSU game that year to see who was better.

Posted by: Tom M. at August 12, 2004 4:46 PM

Yeah, well if Penn State didn't play anyone but cupcake teams, we could have one the National Championship too. Besides, until there is a playoff system, I'm will always place a little asterisk by anyone who wins the title (even PSU's).

Posted by: InsaneIdiot at August 12, 2004 5:07 PM

I was just giving you a hard time - you know I root for PSU too :) I would have liked that game too. I always have told Miguel I would stand by him no matter what, unless Florida State played Penn State, then I would wave to him from across the stadium!

Posted by: Wendi at August 12, 2004 5:15 PM

HA! You'd wave at both of us and Matthew, Thomas and Isabella - don't worry, we'd console you afterwards. ;)

Posted by: Tom M. at August 12, 2004 6:15 PM

I don't think so!!! Matthew is already learning how to do the chop!!!

Posted by: Wendi at August 12, 2004 6:18 PM

Noooooooo! Miguel, it is your solemn duty to stop this immediately! :)
