50 Things About Me
I found this on Leann's blog and decided to give it a whirl!
1. Do you like blue cheese?
Absolutely!
2. Have you ever been to Yellowstone Park?
No, but I want to go there and it's on my list of things to do.
3. Do you own a gun?
Heavens no!
4. What are your favorite songs?
I don't have just one. I like a little bit of everything when it comes to music from classical to jazz to rock to pop to rap to new age to folk to inspirational. I just like music in general!
5. Do you get nervous before doctor appointments?
Not for regular checkups, but if I am sick then I do because I'm worried needles may be involved! I don't do needles!
6. What do you think about hot dogs?
I like them occasionally. I like them with cheese, onions and mustard and sometimes chili.
7. Favorite Christmas song?
Greensleeves (Though I would argue it's not really a Christmas song, though it is often lumped in with Christmas music.)
8. What do you prefer to drink in the morning?
Water or green tea. Mostly water though.
9. Can you do push ups?
Yes, but who wants to?
10. What was the name of your first pet?
Duke. He was my parents German Shepard and I adored that dog. Harassed him too, but he adored me as well and was very protective of me.
11. What’s your favorite piece of jewelry?
My engagement and wedding rings. I also like a pair of earrings that Jamison bought me with my birthstone (opal) and Lex's (pearls).
12. Favorite hobby?
Cooking, reading, writing and quilting.
13. Favorite trait of spouse?
He adores me and really listens to what I am saying.
14. Do you have ADD?
I think everyone has ADD to an extent, but mine is not severe. Jamison on the other hand... ;oP
15. What one trait do you hate about yourself?
I don't think it's healthy to hate anything about yourself and that was a hard, hard lesson learned!
16. What’s your middle name?
I'm going to pass on this one. I hate my given middle name and my legal middle name is my maiden name. If you know me then you know what it is, if not then sorry. :o)
17. Name 3 thoughts you are thinking at this exact moment?
1. I need to vacuum AGAIN!!
2. I need to mop AGAIN!!
3. I want a robot to clean for me! ;oP
18. What did you buy yesterday?
Nothing
19. Favorite vegetable?
Cucumbers, which I guess technically are a fruit, but since most people label them a vegetable there you go.
20. Current worry right now?
I try not to worry, but lately that's easier said than done...Rising costs worry me a lot.
21. Current dislike right now?
Summer heat/humidity...Is it fall yet??
22. Favorite place to be?
North Carolina Beaches
23, What did you do to bring in the New Year?
Slept.
24. Name three people who will complete this?
Given I'm not sending it to anyone... ;oP
25. Believe in God?
Yes, but I don't believe in the vengeful, hateful version that some try to portray. God is good and kind and loves everyone. God is not spiteful and hateful and determined to smite us all from on high.
26. Do you have an unusual skill?
I can take just about any ingredient and make something edible out of it.
27. What shirt are you wearing?
A red Old Navy t-shirt that Darlene mailed to me. I LOVE this shirt!
28. Do you like sleeping on satin sheets?
Don't know...Never have.
29. Can you whistle?
Yes
30. Favorite color?
Blue
31. Would you be a pirate?
What kind of pirate are we talking here? I kind of like the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything! ;oP
32. What songs do you sing in the shower?
Whatever comes to mind when I'm in there. I love the acoustics in the shower!
33. Favorite girl’s name?
Alexis! ;oP
34. Favorite boy’s name?
Jackson
35. What’s in your pocket right now?
A tissue.
36. What made you laugh last?
Alexis
38. Worst injury you’ve ever had?
I injured my ankle very badly playing basketball when we lived in Alabama and was on crutches for 2 months. That sucked!
39. Who is your loudest friend?
Darlene, but she's a loud happy and we're loud together and she makes me smile.
40. Do you like where you live?
I love where I live.
41. How many TVs do you have?
Three
42. How many dogs do you own?
None.
43. What would you do if you hit a deer while driving?
Cry.
44. What is your favorite book?
Oh wow...There are so many. I don't think I could name just one.
45. What is your favorite candy?
Caramel.
46. Favorite Sports Team?
I'm not really into sports that much anymore. I do watch UT football once in a blue moon during college football season, but normally if I see one game that's about it and I usually stumbled upon it instead of actually seeking it out.
47. What were you doing at 12 a.m. this morning?
I was asleep.
48. What was the first thing that you thought of when you woke up this morning?
I have a bazillion and one things to do.
49. What song do you want played at your funeral?
Oh wow...That's a hard one too. Given I don't want a funeral at all to begin with probably nothing.
50. Does someone have a crush on you?
I doubt it...I'm an old married lady now! ;oP

Madeleine McCann's Mother Named as a Suspect
(CNN) -- Police on Friday named Madeleine McCann's mother Kate a suspect in her disappearance, and said the girl's blood was found in a vehicle the family rented 25 days after reporting her disappearance, according to a family spokeswoman.Madeleine McCann's blood was found in a car her parents rented 25 days after they reported her disappearance, Justine McGuiness told CNN.
Kate McCann was seen going into the police headquarters in Portimao, a town in Portugal's Algarve region, on Friday morning.
She was questioned for almost 11 hours the day before, and left looking visibly shaken and drained, according to CNN's Paula Hancocks.
Gerry McCann has also now arrived at the police station for questioning.
Portuguese authorities made no public statement on the latest developments.
Philomena McCann, Madeleine's aunt, said police were suggesting Kate McCann might have accidentally killed her daughter.
"They are suggesting that Kate has in some way accidentally killed Madeleine, then kept her body, then got rid of it," Philomena McCann told Sky News.
This story has really bothered me from the very beginning. How can a story about a missing child not get to you? But the thing that bothered me the most is the parents leaving their children ALONE in a hotel so they could go out and have a nice dinner alone.
Seriously...Who does that??!??!
What goes through your head that makes you think it's ok to leave your children ALONE in a hotel room so you can go out to wine and dine with your spouse? And we're talking small chidren here, not teenagers or anything like that.
Babysitters people! Ask the hotel if they have one or can recommend one and if not then STAY WITH YOUR CHILDREN!!
It's not rocket science.
But now the mother has been charged in the little girl's disappearance. A family spokesperson is saying that it is due to the fact that they want to ask more detailed questions and under Portuguese law that's how you have to do it, but the whole story stinks to me. The piece that just doesn't make sense in the family's story...How is it possible that Madeline's blood was found in a car the family rented 25 days AFTER they had reported her missing. And if the mother did "accidentally" kill her daughter how does that happen exactly? Something stinks to high heaven with this story and to be honest it didn't smell rosy to begin with.

I knew this was going to end up back on the parents. The search usually starts there but then they aren't in America. That story hasn't sounded right from day one.

Probably end up like Jon Benet Ramsey situation.
Posted by: mums at September 8, 2007 11:34 AM
what i think is what was found in the car which was hired 25 days later is fluids/dna from madeline. my simple question is with all that support and sympathy i guess there were more than 20 people willing to drive them around why did they have to hire a car for one day. as the theory suggest they were moving the body from one position to another. lets look at the amount of appeal they launched it might have been to take away attention from them on their guilty. there is no smoke without fire
Posted by: collet at September 8, 2007 1:38 PM
Since I wrote this up yesterday they've named the father as a suspect too. This whole scenario never really had a chance for a happy ending after a few days, but the possible involvement of the parents makes it that much more dire.

What A Message To Send!
So Nicole Richie spends 82 minutes in jail and she's done. The sentence is served.
And Lohan gets 24 hours in jail, of which I doubt she'll serve much more than Richie if any time at all, escapes felony charges and now her mother is making excuses about how it's an attack on her daughter as if Lindsay didn't take the wheel of an automobile while chemically altered.
Look people let's break this down. Drunk driving or driving while under the influence of drugs or both is serious business and these sentences they hand down do NOT stress the severity of the crime. These young "starlets" are getting behind the wheel snockered out of their gourds and could have easily killed someone! It's serious business!
And Lohan's mother, and Paris' mother before her, are not doing their daughter any favors. It's time to stop making excuses for your child and start owning up to the fact that your child has a serious problem, a problem in which you aren't helping by making excuses for her and making her think it's ok. Breaking the law is breaking the law. It's not ok to make excuses and then do whatever you want. It's time to teach responsibility, not excuse making, but then again she's likely too busy partying herself. True, Lohan is an adult now, but you still look to your parents for guidance.
It's overall a very sad commentary on our society.

8 Random Facts About Me
I've been tagged by Monica for 8 Random Fact About Me!
1. I hate shoes! Even in the winter I'm not much of a shoe person. In the summer it's barefoot all the way in and around the house. In the winter socks will do.
2. I have several unfinished books I have started writing just sitting on my hard drive waiting to be finished. I keep thinking I'll find time to write, but I rarely do.
3. I wear my hair up most of the time around the house, but I wear it down most of the time when I go out.
4. I'm not much of a dog person, I prefer cats.
5. I love sushi! I could eat it almost daily I think!
6. Since Alexis has been born I've taken over a hundred thousand pictures. What did we do before digital cameras? ;o)
7. I like grape jelly/jam on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and strawberry jelly/jam on toast, though sometimes I will switch them around.
8. I have an aloe plant that I forget to water for months at a time because it's in the guest bedroom and the door is often closed when no one is visiting, but it still keeps plugging along. I am convinced it is impossible to kill them, not that I am trying! LOL
That was fun! I'm not sure who to tag, but if you're reading this and you want to play along consider yourself tagged! ;o)

I'm with you on the shoe thing! I hate them! And I hate socks even more! I wear birkies/tevas all year round (it never gets very cold for all that long here in TN), and if I have to choose between cold feet and shoes, I choose the cold feet (Of course, if the choice were frostbite or shoes, I'd have to shod up)! I run barefoot every day (usually on the treadmill, but if I'm outside, I still eschew the shoes). Shoes suck.
Also, I have two unfinished screenplays on my hard drive. I suppose we all have something...

i'm not a shoe person as well, though i do like shoes as an accessory.

Optimash Prime
More than meets the eyes*There's a war going on, people, right under our noses. Highly advanced robotic life forms are battling each other, all the while hiding from human sight. But no more; it's time for us to spill the beans, so to speak. At first we thought these robots were only turning into cars and planes and 80's boomboxes, but now they have devised a new tactic. They are transforming (if you'll pardon the term) into vegetables. How a giant robot can turn into a semi truck and a potato, we'll never know. But it's a truth we must accept.
Optimash Prime - leader of the Autobots - has sworn to protect Earth from the evil Decepticons. Why? Because he's just that kind of spud. He's also leading a squad of highly lethal (and luckily on the side of good) team of robots searching for the AllSpice - the source of the Transformers' power. Will M-egg-atron and the Decepticons prevail? Will you help Optimash protect the universe from evil? Or will you just bring Optimash into your home because he's cute? Only time will tell....
Each Optimash Prime comes with one full size Mr. Potato Head Body (6" tall), a nice assortment of body/facial parts, and a mini transformed version (i.e. semi truck).
*Get it? 'Cause taters have eyes, plural? Get it? Oh, nevermind.
The folks over at Think Geek are my kind of people! Check out their website and get an Optimash Prime of your own! ;o)

DC Cherry Blossom Adventure
This morning we set off on one of our adventures. The plan was to drive into DC early, let Alexis see the cherry blossoms, take some pictures and then get out of there before lunch, which in reality we did, but a bit faster than we had expected!
When we arrived around 7:45 am this morning there were already NO PARKING SPACES ANYWHERE AROUND THE TIDAL BASIN!! Apparently we weren't the only ones with the bright idea to get in early. I have never in my life seen anything like it! Jamison and I went in to DC before Alexis was born to see the cherry blossoms and drove in early on a Saturday morning and it was nearly deserted! But today was much different.
We finally found an empty spot, that wasn't really a spot given it was a permit only space, next to the tidal basin and we parked for about 20 minutes and snapped some pictures. Then we high tailed it out of there! The estimated crowd today was supposed to be somewhere between 900,000 and 1,000,000 people! So given we aren't crowd people we knew we wouldn't be hanging around all day, but still!
Alexis enjoyed our little jaunt, we got some good pictures and we had a wonderful, if abbreviated time. You can't ask for more than that! Next time we'll take the train in! ;o)
Happy Saturday everyone!

6 Weird Things About You Meme
Cheri tagged me for the 6 Weird Things About You meme. So here it goes:
1. I like mustard on my grilled cheese sandwiches. I don't know how or where I ever started this habit, or even got the idea that mustard would be good, but I tried it, I liked it and it stuck!
2. I don't think skunks stink. How's that for weird?
3. I like for all of the knives in my knife block in the kitchen to be pointed toward the wall. When Jamison puts them away he usually points them toward the refrigerator instead. This used to irk me, but I realized that just because I'm OCD, doesn't mean he has to be too. I am now just thankful that he helps me in the kitchen because many of my friends husbands do not, but I do sometimes go behind him and point them the other way! ;o)
4. The toilet paper roll has to be hung with the paper coming over the top, instead of under the bottom. When we have company and they hang it the other way, I go behind them after they leave and switch it back the other way. OCD yet again! ;o)
5. All of the light switches on a plate need to be going in the same direction when off. Unfortunately there is one set in my house that always has one light switch going the opposite direction due to the way the builder wired the house when it was built and the fact that it shares light duty with another plate for the same light fixture. I've come to terms with it, but I still don't like it when I see it pointing the other way! OCD anyone? Do you see a pattern forming here? ;o)
6. The way I knit, is not the way that most people knit, but the end result looks the same. I taught myself to knit from a book and somehow it translated differently in my brain. I do my stitches in a different direction/way. It's hard to explain, but if you're a knitter and you watched me knit, you'd see it immediately.
Well there are six sorts of weird things about me. I'm not sure who to tag, but if you want to jump in them feel free! :o)

Dandies By Alexis
We got Alexis a new Kid's Tough digital camera because she has been fascinated with taking pictures as of late. Obviously we weren't going to let her use my camera, but over the past several months she'll grab one of our cell phones and just take picture after picture. With our upcoming trip to Ireland in the fall we decided she needed a way to document her trip as well.
I found this camera before Christmas and Alexis liked the look of it, so we decided to give it a go. Obviously it doesn't make stellar quality images, but it works just fine for a child and Alexis is completely enthralled with the little thing! She immediately wanted to take pictures of the "Dandies" and proceeded to take quite a few. What's a 2 gig SD card for anyway! ;o)
Now we'll see what she ends up taking pictures of. So far she's taken a bunch of pictures of me and the wall and the celiling! ;o)

"Dumbo"
This is a sculpture that is in Jamison's office complex. Alexis adores "Dumbo" and today we had a little time to kill, so I let her actually get out of the car and take a look at him. Usually we just wave to him as we drive by. He's a water sculpture, but he wasn't spouting water today.

We pretty much covered East Tennessee (and North Georgia too!) My grandparents live in Greeneville and we were there Thursday night and Friday night, my parents live in Etowah and we headed there on Saturday after the funeral and stayed with my best friend Darlene, Jamison's parents live in North Georgia and we headed there on Sunday to spend a little time with them. His mom and I were in Chattanooga on Sunday for a little while and we made a stop in Cleveland for lunch too! It was a busy few days!!

They have been happily married for 66 years, so as you can imagine he's more than a bit sad.

Some People Just Have No Soul
PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A man angry his toddler daughter wouldn't go to bed knocked her unconscious and left her to die outside in single-digit temperatures, police said. The frozen body of Nyia Miangel Page, who was about to turn 2, was found Sunday at an abandoned playground about a 10-minute walk from the family's home.
Tiny footprints in the snow suggest she had gotten up and wandered around before she died, police said.
Unbelievable! I simply do not understand how someone could do something so terrible like this. There is a very special place in hell for this sort of person! Bless this poor child's heart! And the thought of her tiny little self getting up and wandering around in the snow obviously not knowing what was going on before she froze to death makes me see red! It makes me angry and it makes me want to cry! How heartbreaking! I just don't even know what else to say.
Rest in peace little Nyia.

Rob Fixed My Camera And Other Musings
Rob and Sam came over today for a playdate and I told him what was happening with my camera and he took one look at it and knew exactly what was wrong with it! He tweaked a dial and voila! It was fixed! I can see through the view finder and I can tell what I'm taking a picture of! Now that's what I'm talking about!
While Rob, Sam, Jamison and Alexis were playing, I went to Starbucks to catch up on reading for my classes since the local library is closed for remodeling. I have to say that there were some interesting scenarios while I was sitting there, but I was able to catch up on reading so that was good. Also to the gentleman sitting next to me humming, I would have loved to have heard you sing. I have a feeling you could have knocked the roof off!
Sam and Alexis had a good time playing as always. Alexis is about a year older than Sam, but they play well together and that's all you can hope for. We had an all around nice sort of day. You can't ask for more than that.

Rowling has said two characters die in the final instalment and fans will want to know if Harry is one of them.
The Potter books have sold 325 million copies worldwide, have been translated into 64 languages and spawned five blockbuster movies.
This is the 10th anniversary of the first book of the hugely successful series being published.
I'll ignore the 2 characters dying right now and worry about that when the book gets here. Yeah! I'm off to order my and Alexis' copies now!

It Went Well!
I talked to my mom about an hour ago and the surgery went well! So well in fact they were almost back home! She sounded a little groggy, but she was talking as normal. She starts physical therapy on Monday. Thanks for the well wishes and prayers! :O)

I talked to her again around 5:45 and she sounded even better. A little sore, but ok. Thanks for thinking of her. :o)

A Thought Or Prayer
My mom is having knee surgery this morning so send a little thought or prayer her way if you get a chance and you do such things. It's just outpatient, but they will put her completely under, which is always something to take seriously. She should be able to go home this afternoon. I'll post an update as soon as I hear anything from my dad.

Camera Update
It turns out my camera is taking pictures just fine, but there is something hosed with the viewfinder. When you look through the viewfinder to focus the picture all you see is a big blur, but it's actually taking a picture. The down side is that it gives you a headache when you take a picture and you aren't quite sure what you've got until you actually look at the picture itself.
Jamison took it and had a guy look at it yesterday, but he wasn't sure, so now we're going to have to take it to someone else. Hopefully we'll have it worked out soon. Not knowing what you're actually going to get until you see the picture is getting annoying!

Now He's Just Cool!
I came across a blog called Don to Earth that was posted about on 10,000 Monkey's & a Camera. Don to Earth is written by Donald Crowdis, who just happens to be 93 years old! How cool is that? He's witty, he's funny and he shows great depth of feeling in terms of looking back at his life.
Check out Don to Earth. It's a good read!
And also check out the Wikipedia entry for Donald Crowdis as well.

My Organic Market
When we went over to Katherine's on Wednesday she was telling me about a market called My Organic Market that she was going to check out the next day. She sent me an email after she went and told me how neat it was and pointed out that they had one near me in Jessup, or as they call it "Columbia East". This morning we ventured over to check it out and I must say even Jamison was impressed!
Here's their mission statement:
Our Mission, our reason for existing and our #1 priority is to restore the environment to the maximum extent we are able.Whether taking action as individuals (both employees and customers), as a company, influencing other companies, funding legislative efforts, or supporting environmental advocacy groups, we will work tirelessly towards ensuring a clean and restored environment for our children and many future generations.
My kind of company! They are also completely wind powered! How cool is that?? A proactive company is one I like to see!
In January 2005, MOM‘s began purchasing 1.2 million Kilowatt-hours of Wind Energy per year. This purchase represents our entire energy use for one year at all three stores. The benefits of this wind-powered energy are:
The elimination of the emissions equal to: 104 cars per year or Offsetting the contamination of the air produced by 120 average households or The positive value of planting 97,989 trees, which naturally remove harmful amounts of carbon dioxide from the air.
They are now up to 5 stores (4 are open, one in Frederick is opening soon) and they continue the same philosophy that they have had since the very beginning. Also I was highly impressed not only with their selection (they had Jamison's Rice cheese and they even had Rice cream cheese), but also their prices! Jamison's Rice cheese was a dollar cheaper per package than at Whole Foods as was Alexis' milk! Their products were comparable in price to my local Giant and they were even cheaper than Giant on organic products! (Which make up the majority of the store...if it's not organic it's all natural, or both!)! Their produce was beautiful and they had a HUGE selection of everything from flour to cheese to yogurt to whole grains to nuts to well you get the picture! They even had vitamins, bath products, etc.! And their staff was very friendly and eager to help if you needed anything, which we didn't, but it was nice to know they were there if we did need them.
Here's some more information on the "Columbia East" location:
MOM's - Columbia East, MD General Manager - Elliot Satin -- Since opening in Sept. 2006, MOM's is proudly serving the Howard County community with our most environmentally friendly location yet. We are truly "Walking the Talk", from skylights and energy efficient equipment to produce clippings and our bamboo service desk. Once again produce is the highlight of this location. We even decorated with photo's of our own beautiful 100% organic produce. Stop by soon and take in our incredible selection of organic, natural and specialty products.
If you live in Maryland or Northern Virginia check out the My Organic Market website and see if there is a branch near you and if you're interested in going to the location in Jessup then click on the map above.

I love organic markets and wish more people would shop them. This kind of market might become more popular if people spread the word and donated money to the cause. OrangeClouds' Organic Market is selling really cool tee shirts on goodstorm.com, http://www.goodstorm.com/item/orangeclouds115/vegetables_of_mass_destruction_0, where 10% of profits go to progressive causes. Organizations like Union of Concerned Scientists!

My Camera Is Wonky
Something is up with my camera and it won't focus even on manual or auto focus. I am going to give it a good cleaning this weekend and see if I can't figure out what is happening. So for the next few days or so there won't be any pictures or recipes. Hopefully I'll be able to figure out what I'm dealing with and fix the problem. If not I'll have to dig out my old camera and see if I can get it to work, but given it was having issues which led me to buy the Canon in the first place, that might not work either. Either way it's much easier to work on such things when little hands aren't trying to "help". I'll keep you posted.

How is it going with the camera? I had what I think might have been a similar problem--I took the battery out for several hours and also the lens, and when I put it all back together it was working again. Hope it's working again soon. (It's probably just off warranty, too, isn't it?)
Posted by: cjmr at January 27, 2007 10:29 PM
I cleaned it thoroughly today and couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. I tried the battery thing the other day and that didn't work. I'm not sure if it's still under warranty or not, but since I never send them in I guess it wouldn't matter anyway. I'm going to have to find a repair place and have them take a look at it. Hopefully it won't be anything to major. I miss not having my camera available!

Busy Day
Not only do graduate classes begin for Jamison and me today, but Alexis and I have ventured over to Katherine's house so that I could watch Nelson while she goes to the dentist. Alexis and Nelson are playing and having a grand old time. They do so well together! And now that Nelson is walking he likes to follow her so they can plot together. He's wanted to do that since he first realized that she was up moving around and now he can! So posting will most likely be light today since we'll be in transit back home this afternoon and I have some school things to do once we get there.
I hope you all are having a great day!

Oscar Nominees Announced
You can read the entire list of nominees here, but I'd like to point out two that I was very thrilled with:
Jennifer Hudson in "Dreamgirls" for Supporting Actress
and
"An Inconvenient Truth" for Best Documentary Feature.
"An Inconvenient Truth" also got the nod for Best Original Song for "I Need to Wake Up" from "An Inconvenient Truth" by Melissa Etheridge. It's a beautiful song if you've never heard it, then pop over to iTunes and give it a listen!
Congrats!

For The Bible Tells Me So
For Hundreds Of Years...The Hebrew and Christian Bibles have been used to sanction discrimination, repression, and injustice around the world. They have justified slavery, empowered segregation, and excused the subjugation of women -- and the tradition continues.
Today, a handful of religious passages are commonly exploited to justify condemnation of and violence against homosexuals.
FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO (working title) is a new feature-length documentary film that will look at this phenomenon and will directly confront the use of scripture by the religious right to deny gay and lesbian people basic human rights.
We will tell the story of V. Gene Robinson, a man from New Hampshire, whose consecration as the first openly gay bishop in the Anglican Communion (indeed in Christendom) has sent shock waves throughout the world. We will also feature Chrissy Gephardt, the lesbian daughter of Congressman Dick Gephardt, as she and her family struggle to deal with her very public coming out. (In addition, an undecided third story of theological transformation on this issue will be featured.)
Throughout the unfolding of three very human journeys, clergy and major Biblical scholars will also weigh-in on what those oft-quoted scriptural verses, so often cited by religious conservatives, really mean. Among those voicing affirming interpretations of scripture are Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Harvard's Peter Gomes, openly gay Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and Reverend Jimmy Creech.
I was reading a story yesterday about a documentary called For The Bible Tells Me So which is based on the same premise as this book. It promises to be an interesting film and I'm looking forward to it being released on DVD so that I may see it too.
Check out the website for the documentary here and find out more about Sundance here.

How Do You Lose A Knife?
I'm missing a knife out of my kitchen and my favorite knife at that!. How does a large knife disappear? Alexis says she didn't take it (and she'll tell you if she did...She's forever taking my camera cord and she always owns up to it and tells me where she hid it even though she knows she isn't supposed to touch it!) and the kitchen has been completely cleaned several times since it went missing, but it has not resurfaced. I don't take things out of the kitchen, especially not knifes because I'm very conscious of keeping them out of the reach of Alexis and she knows not to touch them if she sees them! Alexis knows the only knife she's allowed to use is her safety knife.
So how does a whole knife disappear into thin air? Is there a knife fairy? Or did it get thrown away? (This is the theory I'm leaning toward, but I have no idea how!) I guess I'll have to make another trip to IKEA soon and get another one. I LOVED that knife!!

Posted by: cjmr at January 22, 2007 10:53 AM
That's one of the beefs about this kitchen. It only has one drawer and when you open it you can readily see everything in it. I think Qusan's ghost idea is a good one, or the afore mentioned trash can! LOL

My Take On Going Back To School
You may have read Jamison's excited post about returning to school and I would love to say that I share that enthusiasm, but I decidedly don't. I know that it's what I must do right now, but do I want to? No. I also know once classes get into the swing of things I'll excel because well that's what I do, but I still am not all that thrilled about the prospect at the moment.
One thing I've noticed from looking over the syllabi for my classes is that there is much less physical work involved in graduate level classes. This worries me because I'm sure that the illusion is just that, an illusion. I've heard it both ways...I've heard people say grad school is much lighter in terms of work load and I've heard those say it's much more work. Right now it appears to be the former and not the latter, but only time will tell.
Books! Books suck! I just paid $125 for one text book and the school actually wanted $165 for a used copy! I got it from Amazon instead, but $125 for a textbook? That's freaking nuts! My other text book was $95. Are these books plated in gold? It's ridiculous!
Another thing that really has me down is the fact that both major classes have group projects. DEAR GOD IN HEAVEN I FREAKING HATE GROUP PROJECTS!! I hate them with a passion that outshines all other passions! Group projects are the bane of my existence! You always have the person or people that don't do a damn thing and then you are graded on their ineptitude. Or you have the person that does as little work as possible to skate by and you end up doing everything yourself. I had a professor argue one time that this is how real life is, to which I told him that that was the problem with our society...No one wants to do the job, they just want to do what they can to get by and that is why American businesses flounder! He said he had never thought of it that way before, but I bet he's still giving group projects!
But I digress.
So I know going in I'll end up doing the brunt of the work, because well that's how it always ends up. I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised at the graduate level and have other people actually chip in. I can always hope right? For one of the classes the group project is the majority of the grade. There is no final, so that just makes me all the more tense about the whole thing. I take my grades seriously and some people don't!
Anyway, so the march to classes begins! I'd much rather it be a march to the beach instead! ;o)

My Peeps!
I literally have to get up and leave the room if someone insists on watching Rachael Ray when I am around! She is like nails on a chalk board to me! Her fake laugh, her inane blather, her two sizes too small clothing, her made up words! It's all too much! EVOO! Yum-O! Dear God that woman is annoying as all hell! And the few time I've tried to make one of her recipes it doesn't work unless you do some major tweaking!

Goodbye McAfee!
For over a decade Jamison and I have been loyal McAfee users. We long ago abandoned Norton after it let a virus through that decimated one of our computers and we've know several other people who have lost systems with Norton as well. We're computer savvy (and the other people were too) but Norton's product just doesn't hold water!
Anyway back to McAfee. A year ago when we updated our virus software McAfee started harassing us about not using their firewall too. We used Zone Alarm and were quite happy with it, so we weren't about to switch over. And then they started their annoying pop up ads disguised as virus alerts! NOT GOOD! If I'm paying you for a product you aren't going to advertise to me for free! But I digress.
When our virus software ran out yesterday we decided to just stick with McAfee, since although they were annoying me with their pop ups, they've been reliable to date. We purchased a copy and brought it home and they refused to let us install the virus software unless we used their firewall as well. They would NOT let us install with Zone Alarm, the software just flat out refused.
Jamison spent a couple of hours on their "help" chat trying to get them to provide some service and nothing! Their attitude was use our firewall or else. So we decided to take the or else route and we took the software back to the store and got our money back. We went with Zone Alarm's suite. My theory was that if the free product was as great as it was, then the paid product would be that much better and you know what IT IS!!
Zone Alarm is Awe-some!! AWESOME!! And their anti-spam email blocker is TO DIE FOR!! I literally get thousands of emails a day and the majority of them are spam. Microsoft's spam blocker that is built into Outlook is a complete joke. Even when you create rules it doesn't work, but this thing works like a gem! And if something gets through once, you add it to the junk thing and the next time it comes in Zone Alarm nukes it!
So for any McAfee users out there we highly recommend taking the leap to Zone Alarm. We have left McAfee in the dust and I can't say we'll ever look back! We even upgraded Jamison's laptop too! You should leap as well! Go to the Zone Alarm website and read more about their fantastic products!
Oh and a note to companies everywhere...Don't piss off people with blogs...We'll tell the world how terrible your customer service is, how bad you product is and how to replace it with something that is better!!

Beckham will play for MLS' L.A. Galaxy in $250M deal
LONDON (AP) -- David Beckham agreed to a five-year deal with the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer, leaving the Real Madrid club at which he enjoyed worldwide popularity but experienced disappointment on the field.Beckham, the former English captain who also starred for Manchester United, will join the Galaxy after his contract with Real Madrid expires on June 30. Los Angeles opens its season April 8 in Houston.
"I am proud to have played for two of the biggest clubs in football and I look forward to the new challenge of growing the world's most popular game in a country that is as passionate about its sport as my own," he said in a statement released Thursday.
Even though he's tattooed (and as I've mentioned before I just don't get into that!) David Beckham is seriously yummy! Welcome to the US! Try and find some new friends though, Tom Cruise is a freak!
That is all.

Things I Want In A New House
I'm going to keep a running tally of the things I want in a new house and then once we get one we'll look and see what we ended up with. I would imagine I'll keep adding to this list as I think of things. Jamison may even add some things too!
Things I Won't Compromise on:
A bigger kitchen...MUST. HAVE. SPACE. CABINET SPACE IS A MUST AND SO IS COUNTER SPACE. MY NEW KITCHEN MUST ALSO HAVE MORE THAN ONE DRAWER!!!
A back yard big enough for me to have a larger garden and Alexis to have her sandbox and a large swing set
A "play" room (I'm tired of tripping on toys!!)
A room big enough to hold my drafting table
At least 4 bedrooms
Things I Want:
At least 3 bathrooms
A coat closet on the main floor
Laundry on the main floor
A finished basement (possible "play" room?)
A kitchen island
A bigger tub
Hardwood floors!!! (I may move this one to a MUST, though we can always put them in ourselves!)
A deck or patio (I prefer patio, Jamison likes decks)
French doors
Room to put a shoe bench so I can stop tripping over shoes next to the door!
A fenced yard
Room for a rain barrel or two and a composter
A storage building or shed
More energy efficient
A kitchen pantry
Things Jamison Wants:
A two car garage (We may move this to the MUST list too!)
That's all for now, but as I said if I think of anything else I'll be back and Jamison may have some things to add too. :o)

We've got a place to put shoes. cjmr still doesn't have me trained to put my shoes away, though.
We have three playrooms: the two kids' bedrooms, and whatever room they are in.
We found a good way to keep the laundry room out of the basement: we have no basement. It's not as important as people think, and our basement never floods. My sister, on the other paw, has her laundry *upstairs*.
Posted by: reno at January 10, 2007 12:50 PM
Our laundry is on the main floor, which is better than the basement, but ideally I'd like it on the same floor as the bedrooms given the majority of the stuff you wash is on that floor. I think we'd have to build a house to get it that way though!
Alexis isn't allowed to play in her room. Her bedroom is only for sleeping. But she has toys everywhere esle in the house! The basement works as a great play room in the summer and fall, but in the the winter and early spring it's just too cold to play down there given it isn't heated.
Posted by: Dianne at January 10, 2007 12:54 PM
A lot of newer houses have laundry on the same floor as the bedrooms (we have several friends whose houses are that way). While I totallly see your point about that being where most of the dirty laundry originates, I think I would get tired of always having to go up there to switch the laundry during the day, since I'm downstairs most of the time. That, and I really like watching TV while I fold the laundry -- so I'd end up just schlepping it all down here with the TV. :)
Posted by: katherine at January 10, 2007 1:49 PM
I fold clothes as I take them out of the dryer most of the time. I can fold an entire load in 1-2 minutes. Besides I have a TV upstairs too. :o)

I like the kitchen, dining room and the living room close so that I can cook and still be visually/conversationally involved with others in the house. That is because my first house had the living room seperated from the kitchen dining room. In every house we have had since that house, I made Darrell combine those three rooms enough for the cook to be involved with everyone on the main floor. I always wanted a laundry drop, but I never got one, Darrell always had some highly detailed reason it wouldn't work. I think he worked that out ahead of time, the highly detailed reason. I think you need a craft room, Jamison needs a room for all his stuff, and then of course the delightful Miss G needs a place for all of her jewels. You have a good list. Add to it as you find different things. But the one thing I have never solved was the shoe problem. Good luck on that one. You almost have to be a shoe "Nazi" who forces everyone to put their shoes at a certain place to solve that problem.
Posted by: mums at January 10, 2007 4:20 PM
I think I could easily be a shoe Nazi! >:o) LOL
Posted by: Dianne at January 10, 2007 4:49 PM
We call our laundry drop the "stairs". It only works if you pick up the clothes immediately afterwards, though.
Posted by: reno at January 11, 2007 8:19 AM
For highly varying definitions of 'you', all of which tend to mean me (or occasionally Marilyn), not reno.
Posted by: cjmr at January 11, 2007 12:08 PM
We toss our laundry over the landing. Just as good as having a laundry chute. You still have to carry it back up the stairs though. Oh well! :o)

A Busy Warm Saturday
When I saw the forecast for today called for weather in the 70's I knew at some point today we'd have to go outside and do something in nature. We had decided last night to take Alexis to the library this morning, since she had never been before and she's majorly into books now. When we left the library we decided to take Alexis over to Lake Waterford to see the ducks and to check out the path around the lake to see if it was conducive for Alexis and I to use on a regular basis so I could get a little exercise (turns out it isn't really for just the two of us, but the three of us had fun!) We looked at the ducks and walked around a bit then headed home for lunch.
After lunch we promised Alexis that if she'd take a good nap we'd take her to the playground. She was ecstatic and went right to sleep. I woke her up around 2:30 (on the days Alexis actually naps she usually takes a 3-4 nap and I knew if we waited too long we'd loose the sun) and we got ready to head over to the playground. When we got to the playground it was completely packed! We took one look at all those people packed in together like sardines and knew it wasn't going to happen. Alexis thankfully is very laid back and changes path in midstream pretty easily, so when we asked her if she wanted to go see the ducks again instead she said "Sure!" and off we went.
Lake Waterford itself had a lot of people milling about, but it was no where near as crowded as that playground! We decided to walk further around the path than we had this morning and we walked to the top of the lake and back. It's a nice little walk, with lots of roots, so sort of difficult, but it's a nice work out for your legs. Alexis and I had a ball and well Jamison tolerated it and that's about as good as you're going to get with Jamison and nature! ;o) We spent a couple of hours walking around the lake and then headed home.
When we arrived back home I decided to take a picture of my daffodils in front of our house, which have sprouted:
They are a little confused! It's been warm lately and today we reached 74 degrees...In January! And while it was nice to have a warm day to explore with, it beg
