That his "I'm not happy, and it's YOUR job to make me happy." face. The triggers for the face vary -- could be that you were singing, and stopped. Could be that you aren't paying enough attention to him. Could be that he's just bored and can't get his hands on anything interesting. Often it's because he's tired and all of the above have just happened. :oP

And Now The Fun Begins

About a week ago we realized we weren't going to be able to talk about just anything in front of Alexis anymore. I sometimes forget how intuitive she is and then she knocks me back into reality so fast it makes my head spin! The other morning Jamison and I were discussing some tests that Nelson had to have done later in the day and Alexis was in the room. Neither of us were paying that much attention to her because she was doing her thing and when she's doing her thing you let her do it and enjoy the quiet while it lasts. Later in the day it became very evident that we are going to have to watch what we talk about in front of her.

"Mommy is Nelson sick?"

"No. Why?" I asked her absentmindedly as I moved laundry from the washer to the dryer.

"You said dis morning that he has something in his throat. Is his throat sick?"

Dear Lord! She got that much out of what we were saying earlier this morning! I thought to myself as I wondered how to explain what was happening to her.

"Alexis, you know the kiss you have on your neck from God and the one Nelson has on the top of his head?" (Alexis has a Haemangioma on her neck, more commonly called a "Strawberry Mark" and we have told her it was where God kissed her on her neck before she was born and Nelson has one on the top of his head.)

"Yes Mommy."

"Well Nelson has another little mark like the one on your neck and the one on the top of his head that in his throat and they have to check him out and make sure he's ok. If it's too big it might cause problems when he eats or breathes. You know how Nelson breathes kind of loud sometimes?"

"Yes."

"Well that's because of that."

"Is he ok?"

"Yes."

"OK."

And with that she went off to play and I called Jamison at work to tell him what had happened. Shortly after that Katherine called and told us that everything had gone fine and that the spot wasn't that big and hopefully it would stay little and they wouldn't have to do anything about it. When I hung up the phone Alexis was right there at my feet.

"Was dat Aunt Nigh?"

"Yes and Nelson is ok!"

"I'm so happy!"

"I am too."

"I was worwied."

"Don't worry...He's ok."

"Mommy, what's it called?"

"What is what called?"

"The kiss from God."

"Oh it's a Haemangioma."

"OK...I can't say dat word!"

"You don't have to say it honey."

"OK. I wuv Melson."

"I'm sure he loves you too."

Alexis is very tender hearted and she was extremely worried about what was happening with "her Melson". On the flip side Jamison and I were very surprised that she figured out what was happening from our brief conversation earlier that morning. Apparently even when it appears she isn't really listening or even grasping what you are talking about she's soaking it all in. We're going to have to watch what we talk about in front of her. While we are very open with her about most things, and this would have been one of the things we would have been open with her about had we thought she would understand what was going on, there are other things we talk about that she doesn't need to know yet. They grow up so fast!

She is so sweet and so caring already- you really have been blessed with an angel :)

Posted by: Yolanda at April 6, 2006 10:12 PM

She does have a good set of ears on her. During my last visit she knew your and Jamison's location by your foot falls. The only time she had to look for you is when you two were not talking or moving. So all she will have to do is learn to keep track of the sound in the back of her mind.

Posted by: Royal at April 7, 2006 8:01 AM

Alex was like that--picking up on grown-up conversations and asking about them. Multi-syllabic words work for a while, as do obscure cultural references and foreign terms.

Posted by: cjmr at April 7, 2006 9:16 AM

Actually I've never met a kid who doesn't know exactly where their parents are at this age. It's a comfort factor thing.

Posted by: Dianne at April 7, 2006 9:52 AM

Two Sides of the Same Coin

Alexis gave Nelson a lot of her things that she no longer used when he was born including her old walker. As you can see it looks like Nelson likes it just as much as she did. :o)

Posted by: ManDrake at April 5, 2006 12:10 PM

You're just wrong! ;oP LOL

Posted by: Dianne at April 5, 2006 12:13 PM

And here I was thinking how different they looked! I think they both look like their respective parents.

Posted by: cjmr at April 5, 2006 12:37 PM

These are a couple of cuties! Mine really loved the johnnie-jump-up when they were babies. It's the bouncy seat that hooks onto the top of the door-jamb. My kids would bounce for hours.

Posted by: Kathy at April 5, 2006 1:29 PM

Alexis liked the jumper seat too. She wouldn't stay in it quite that long though. She'd go for about 20 minutes a stretch and then she got bored with it. I think she liked the walker so much because she could move around and go to other places in the house.

Posted by: Dianne at April 5, 2006 2:11 PM

Those things must be some kinda fun to generate grins like that. I could use one of those for myself!

Posted by: Qusan at April 5, 2006 4:27 PM

I think they look alike. Then again, I've always thought you looked like your parents & Katherine... and have to remind myself often that you were adopted.

Coexist

Today Alexis and Nelson merely coexisted on each other's periphery without much interaction. Occasionally Nelson would look at Alexis like, "How'd you do that?" or "You're a loud little thing!" Or Alexis would tell Nelson, "Get up!" or "Sing Melson!" But most of the time they simply coexisted in blissful ignorance of each other and this picture says it all:
