Tooth Fairy Pillow For Miss G
Since we have our first loose tooth (even though it's not as loose now as it was two days ago, which is kind of weird, but still) Alexis wanted a Tooth Fairy Pillow!
It's just the perfect size for her and it has its own little pocket for a tooth and of course the treasure the Tooth Fairy will leave once said tooth has been taken:
And on the back a big old A for Alexis of course! ;o)
Not bad considering I freehanded the A. I guess I freehanded the whole thing truth be told given I just cut out squares and rectangles and put them together with no pattern. I'm talented like that! ;oP Alexis picked all the fabric out herself from my stash. She's beyond herself with glee at the results. I'm glad she's easily amused! ;oP Did you know these suckers sell for upwards of $40? Seriously! You've got to be kidding me!!
Anyway, I hope you're all having a good day. I'll get back to the "What's Happening Today?" stuff tomorrow...Today I'm trying to keep my toes warm! ;oP

Quilted Bag
Things have finally slowed down and I have had some time to be crafty once again! Alexis needed a bag for her dance/gymnastics class so she picked out the fabrics an I made the bag this morning.
Alexis thought since it's partly for a dance class it should have "dance shoes" on the fabric. Good logic if you ask me! ;o)
There is room enough for her tap shoes, her ballet shoes, her change of clothes, her coat, etc.
I started out using a pattern, but it rapidly devolved into gibberish as patterns often do, so I ad libbed the rest of the bag. I ended up adding Velcro to close the bag since it is easier for Alexis to open among other deviations. I like the way it ended up and more importantly Alexis loves it and that's all that matters. :o)
On to the next project!

It's Spring Break...Pull Out The Sewing Machine!
I haven't had time to sit down and do anything crafts or quilting wise since last fall, especially after I had the bright idea to go back to school. This week is my Spring Break and after finishing two midterms from hell in the past couple of days I was more than ready to do something crafty, so today I made up a quilt block:
I actually designed this block before we went to the beach in September and had hoped to work on a quilt while we were there, but I got side tracked with beachy things instead. Today I cut out one block and sewed it together to see how it looked together. I like it!
Click on the extended entry below to see some pictures of it coming together, a rough outline block I made on the computer last September and some fabric "swatches"!
This week I'm hoping to finally finish Alexis travel quilt this week and then cut out more of these blocks!
Each small block has nine patches, which are sewn into 3 strips:
The strips are then sewn together to make one of the smaller blocks:
On each side there are two small blocks that are sewn together with a strip:
And then the two sides are joined with a couple of strips and a square to make the final block:
And just for fun here is the computerized block I made up as a rough idea of how this would come together back in September of 2006:
I took a picture of each fabric and roughly pieced it together using paint. It's a nice way to get a very rough idea of how the block will turn out and as you can see it did give a nice idea.
Photos swatches of the fabrics below:
More to come, but who knows when! ;O)

Afternoon Project
Ever since we made a play area for Alexis in our basement a couple of years ago, which is unfinished, I've wanted to do something with the wall in her play area. Most of my thoughts about the unfinished wall have shaped themselves in the way of a mural, but I was open to other ideas as well. Since we started Alexis' formal learning process I also wanted an area where we could work and play. I wanted it to be a fun place to work and play, as well as looking fun too!
Yesterday I decided to have Jamison move my dry erase board to the basement so Alexis and I could utilize it during her lessons. I also put up an alphabet/number chart and a shelf to get the dry erase markers and other items up out of Alexis' reach. Once we did this it became very apparent to me that the wall had to have something done to it! The additions just made the bare insulation pop out even more and it just looked drab, boring and depressing!!
Last night I started thinking about the problem and I thought it would be neat to put up a cork wall that we could stick things into, but it rapidly became apparent that this wasn't going to work. 1) Cork is expensive as all get out in terms of the size I wanted (10' X 7') and 2) I couldn't find cork around here anyway. So my mind went back to the mural. Since the basement has no windows due to the builders lack of foresight I wanted something to make it feel like we were outside. And I decided it would be easy to use the wall joints and attach fabric to them to make a fabric mural, or as Alexis calls it "a wall quilt" and I did just that!
Click on the extended entry below to see the finished product.

I've been itching to knit lately! I don't know what it is, maybe it's the cooler weather, but I just have had the urge to knit! So I decided to knit myself a shawl to throw on to go to the mailbox on a cold day or just throw around my shoulders around the house.

Pinwheel Progress
I am working on quilting the pinwheel quilt now. Every time I start out machine quilting it makes me long for one of those quilting machines that take up half a room, but I digress! Alexis is now a bit under the weather so I don't see me getting to work on this that much over the next few days. We shall see, but hopefully I will be able to get it finished in time for her to use it with her air mattress at the beach!

Pinwheels: All To Do Now Is The Quilting!
Today I finished to top for the pinwheel quilt! I also put together a solution for the back since I was trying to totally work out of my stash and not have to buy any new fabric! I think that's the first time I've every done that! I'm forever buying fabric and never doing anything with it! ;o)
Click on the extended entry below to see the progress.
Earlier today I had thought I would put on a light border to sort of tone down the bright middle, but as I way laying various fabrics up against the quilt top Alexis insisted on the the bright green you see below! She said "Mommy I want gween! It's so pwetty!" So we went with green, given it's her quilt and she picked out the fabric for the top herself a year ago and now she wanted the green! What can I say...She likes bright, wild colors! :o)
I didn't have any extra wide quilt backing fabric that matched this quilt (and I use the term "match" loosely! ;o)) so I decided to take some other fabric that I had, that was sort of wild, but not quite as out there as the front, yet had some of the same colors and piece together as a back piece.
I decided to use the green in the middle and use the blue on both sides since this will come around the front and lay on the green border there to "bind" it all together. This way it evens out the tones a bit.
Here's a close up of the blue and green back fabrics:
It shouldn't take very long at all to bring it all together! It's all laying on my ironing board ready to go!
So we're moving along nicely! I plan to pin it all together and get started on quilting tomorrow during Alexis' "nap" since we are beginning our ABC unit in the morning and won't have time! And of course I'll post pictures when we're done! :o)

Shaking Up the Pinwheels
This afternoon I decided that it would be fun to alternate rows on the Pinwheel Quilt and have one row of pinwheels and then on row of squares and shake things up a bit so to speak! Since I've been cutting it out a row at a time as I go it was easy to switch gears.
Both the top row and the bottom row will be pinwheels to even things out, but I like the contrast in shapes from row to row...
And Alexis does too! :o)

More Pinwheels
As our departure for the beach gets closer (24 days!) I have been going over things in my head that we need to take with us. Groceries, clothes, towels, toys, etc. When we bought Alexis her air mattress when we thought we were going to Tennessee/Georgia before we found out Jamison had to go to Dallas for work instead, I knew that we'd be taking it to the beach with us as well. It's the perfect size for her and it's on her level. She can easily get in and out of it and that makes it easier on all of us! But today I had a thought...We don't really have a blanket or quilt that is the size of the mattress given it's a odd size. Sure she has her quilts that she sleeps with, but they are much smaller than the mattress so I decided to whip up a cute quilt to go with her travel bed that would fit and wouldn't be as easy to fall off! I dug into my stash, found the material and decided it would be fun to do some pinwheels!
And as you can see she's already thrilled with it!
It zips together quickly! You've gotta love straight lines and no pins except for the last step!
I expect to finish this by Saturday at the latest. I'll post a picture when I'm done. After that I'll tackle the beach quilt, but it's looking increasing unlikely that that one is going to make it to the beach this year! We'll see how it goes next week! :o)

I am envious that you're still at the point in life where you can go to the beach after school starts! It's too hot to even think of going to the beach during the summer -- I love to go in October or November. The quilt is cute.

We usually go the week after Labor Day. I love Hatteras Island and the lighthouses in the Outer Banks of North Carolina so we usually end up there. There is something about that island that speaks to me! :O) It's nice to go after school starts because it isn't as crowded. I don't do crowded! LOL
We actually plan on home schooling Alexis so we can still take vacations in the fall after she's of school age as well. We'll do beach themed lessons or mountain themed lessons or European themed lessons, depending on where we venture to. :o)

Beach Bag
OK, so let's call a pig a pig...This bag was a bitch to make! Or quite specifically the straps were a bitch to make! Each strap ended up taking roughly an hour and a half for each one! Don't look for a bag like this one on Design by Dianne anytime soon, until I have time to figure out a way to make the straps differently!
Anyway, the finished product turned out exactly as I had hoped, despite me wanting to throw it through the window due to the straps! The beach is the only place on the planet (well ok the pool too!) where I think big bags are acceptable! I just hate to see a big purse, but when you're going to the beach you need room for towels, sunscreen, toys, hats, snacks, water, etc! And you need a big bag to put it all in!
The finished dimensions are 20 inches tall, 22 inches wide and 10 inches from front to back. You could easily put Alexis in this bag! It would probably hold roughly 6 large fluffy folded beach towels, plus a few more things!
Now on to the beach blanket! :o)

I Can't Do Anything In That Room!!
The sewing room/computer room is seriously getting on my nerves! I can't find an effing thing! And I "clean" up only to get more irritated because I can't find a single flipping thing I'm looking for! It's just too small!! Jamison has joked about moving me to the basement and I have resisted, but something has to be done! There just isn't enough room in that space for me to be creative and it's hampering my muses!
I had also thought about moving the guest room down here to the main floor and moving my stuff upstairs into that bedroom. Because I need natural light! That has been my main issue with being shunted to the basement all along because the builder of this house didn't have the foresight to put in a few window wells down there to let a little light in! Don't even get me started about what an idiot that guy is and how many things about this house he messed up!!
So for now I'm at an impasse, because I can't function in that small space that is closing in on me with all the computer/craft stuff! I've got to think about this one for a little while and then figure out what to do from here. All this because I was trying to make a simple beach bag and can't find my 2 inch ruler! But this is just one of many such not finding what I need instances as of late and it's on my last nerve!! Ugh!!
I now return you to your regularly scheduled Daffodil Lane.

Beach Quilt Progress
I decided to work on the border first 1) Because it was easier and 2) to get a feel of this process since I've never done a ragged edge, quilt as you go quilt before. As I suspected it is zipping right along and it's very forgiving in terms of everything not having to be 100% perfect! Now that's what I call a quilt...Now if I could just keep Alexis from "helping" me I might get this done this week! ;o)
I also decided to add a fish to the polka dot blocks to make it even more beachy. Click on the extended entry below to see the afore mentioned fish, along with some finished border blocks!

Mr. Fish...He will most likely have "bubbles" coming out of his mouth too and I will quilt it to look like he's under the surface of the water.

The turtle block also quilted with waves.

Getting Back To Normal
Things with Alexis are getting back to normal. She's still a little grumpy, but her mood has improved 1,000% since Jamison got home last night! I was amused when we were getting her ready for bed last night and she was acting up a bit. Jamison turned to me and said "THIS is better than before?" I just laughed and told him "Which part of the past few days were hell on earth confused you?!!!?!?" I don't think he grasped the magnitude of her anger or her actions toward me up until that point.
Anyway, this morning we ran to BJ's to get some fruits and veggies. We came home and I cleaned out the fridge and got everything put away and then we ventured out for lunch. I spent the majority of the afternoon cutting out blocks for my beach quilt. I decided to go with a quilt as you go/raw edge flannel quilt with smaller crabs! I even threw in a few turtles on the corners via some flannel with embroidered turtles because I wanted to! It's going to be really cute! I actually hope to get the majority of it done tomorrow, we'll see how it goes!
There are 32 15 inch blocks (4 different fabrics, 3 make up the pattern and one helps make up the border). There are also 16 6 inch X 15 inch blocks (8 navy, 4 with turtles) that round out the border. And there are a total of 16 blue crabs, 2 per the 8 blocks whose material looks like waves. I also had to cut out 32 13 X 13 and 16 4X13 batting blocks. It's going to be cute and it should come together quickly! Click on the extended entry below to see a rough layout of the quilt and the various aspects of the blocks. Keep in mind this is a very rough layout given Alexis was walking all over it and the blocks were sliding around on the hardwood floor! I just spread it out on the dining room floor to get an idea of what I was working with!
But anyway, that's what we've been up to today. I've been working on the beach quilt, Alexis have been playing and "helping" me out, all while checking to make sure Jamison hadn't disappeared again and Jamison has been relaxing and playing a video game. It's very nice to all be back together! :O)
Now tomorrow all I have to do is start sewing! :o)

Quilt Block
Donna is working on a quilt for Alexis' big girl bed! I picked out the pattern and the material and she is doing the rest. She even enlisted my Mom's help so that Alexis would know that they both worked on it! It will be a very special quilt for Alexis and she'll treasure it always.
Anyway, Donna sent me a picture of one of the blocks today.

I Think I'm Going to Do This One Next Instead!
The more I look at this pattern the more I like it! I am still going to do the pattern I listed earlier, but I'm going to do this one first!
The pink squares will be the pink gingham I bought today. The green squares will use the green gingham. The yellow will use the yellow with the flowers. The blue squares will use the purpley blue polka dots I got today. And the outside border will use the pink with swirls.
I'm going to use 2 1/2 inch squares for the squares and go from there. This is just what I was looking for!

While Alexis "Slept"...
When Alexis took her "nap" today I left her with Jamison and ran over to Cottonseed Glory to see if I could find some material for the border of this quilt, which I'm working on and should finish any day now, or would that is if I would just sit down and work on it! And of course me in a fabric store is like Jamison in computer store! So of course I bought some new fabric, not that I needed any, but anyone that is a fabricaholic knows where I'm coming from! (Click on the extended entry below to see what came home to live at my house!)
Anyway, when I got my new finds home I immediately started looking for a quilt pattern to put it to good use! I wanted something a bit more complex, but that remained in the straight line family. I'm all for any quilt that is intuitively straight, meaning it can be a triangle as long as that triangle involves being sewn together to become a square! I don't do curves or weird angles! That's not to say I couldn't do it if I wanted to, but I'm not going to stress myself out to the point of wanting to jump in front of a bus! Straight lines are good!!
Now, back to the issues at hand...So I decided to do something like this:
And then I plan on putting the individual blocks together to form something like this:
Keep in mind that's just a rough rendition of the final product and of course it will have a border around the edge when it's finished. And I'm not using all of the fabrics I bought today, just some of them mixed with some pieces in my current stash. I will start cutting it out when the quilt I am working on now is completed, which should be in the next few weeks. If I'd just sit down and do it it would probably take me an afternoon, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. Jamison has a political meeting/training session to go to tomorrow or I would make him watch Alexis and I would do nothing but work in the quilt, but it isn't meant to be. Maybe I can get a little quilting time in tomorrow anyway. We'll see how the day goes. Pictures of the quilt top to come as soon as it's completed.

Nice. Like the pattern. Does it have a name?
Posted by: mums at June 24, 2006 4:49 PM
It's called a "Four Patch Mock Log Cabin Block".
Posted by: Dianne at June 24, 2006 5:10 PM
I found it a long time ago and bookmarked the site, and then found it today when I was going through my quilting bookmarks.
Posted by: Dianne at June 24, 2006 5:10 PM
I like it, it looks similiar to a modified Rail Fence. Did the web site say anything about a scrap edition? I am currently moving the sewing room around and I seem to have plenty.
Posted by: mums at June 24, 2006 5:19 PM
Click on the words "Four Patch Mock Log Cabin Block" above and it will take you to the webpage. It's actually a scrap quilting page that I found it on. :o)
Posted by: Dianne at June 24, 2006 5:20 PM
Really a nice web site. It should move quickly. I am TRYING to get the room organized so I can use small blocks of time to sew. I am currently being distracted by the computer.

Oooh! Love the yellow gingham with purple flowers. Mind if I ask how much that was per yard? It would be perfect for curtains for Marilyn's bedroom!
Posted by: cjmr at June 24, 2006 7:32 PM
It was somewhere in the $8-9 range, but I don't know for sure how much. They don't give you a detailed receipt, but I got the last yard they had. They may order more. I can look and see if there is a brand name or something stamped on it somewhere if you want me to.
Posted by: Dianne at June 24, 2006 7:36 PM
Would you, please? I can always order it off one of the internet fabric stores if I have to.
Posted by: cjmr at June 24, 2006 8:00 PM
Here's what's on the selvage:
"Victoria's Scatter Garden by Debbie Beaves of the Violet Patch for RJR Fabrics 2004"
Posted by: Dianne at June 24, 2006 8:03 PM
Thanks!
Posted by: cjmr at June 24, 2006 8:06 PM
No problem! Hope you can find it somewhere. :o)
Posted by: Dianne at June 24, 2006 9:09 PM
Unfortunately, according to RJR Fabrics web site it is 'out of print' so to speak. So if anyone has some they aren't likely to have the 8 yards I'd need to do curtains. I suppose I might find 3 yards and I could do valances and tiebacks...
Posted by: cjmr at June 24, 2006 10:25 PM
I figured that might be the case when I saw the 2004 on the selvage. You should try EBay. They sometimes have a bunch of stuff in their quilting section!
Posted by: Dianne at June 25, 2006 8:40 PM
An hour of Googling later, I found two quilting stores that have some, and many more stores to try. I'm going to put off looking for more until we're at reno's parents--I should have some free time then.

Another View of the Blue Polka Dot Dress
Several people have emailed me and said that they didn't think the blue polka dot dress looked that big on Alexis. Perhap this will give you more perspective and keep in mind I have it pinned up in the back too.
Like I said earlier...Cute, but HUGE!!

Put belt loops and a attach belt on it? Like a bath robe has.
Posted by: Royal at June 12, 2006 10:42 AM
It wouldn't look right. She'll grow into. She doesn't have to wear it right now. Though she could. It's cute, even if it is big. :o)
Posted by: Dianne at June 12, 2006 10:56 AM
Really? I was thinking of one which tied in the back with an off white bow. Topped off with a straw spring hat with a light blue ribbon and a sun flower on the front.

Blue Polka Dot Dress
After I straightened up the craft room this morning I decided to work on Alexis' dress. I cut the pattern out a few weeks ago and decided to finish it up today. I cut the pattern out on Alexis' current size, but I should have measured the pattern to her first! It's actually pinned up at the shoulders on the back in this picture, though you can't tell it from this angle. It's cute, but it's HUGE!! The pattern itself was easy, but the directions were sucky! So I stopped using theirs and made it up and I went along. And what do you know...It still looks like a dress! ;o)

I don't know what's up with the sizing on patterns. Little kids patterns almost always make things way bigger than you'd think based on the measurements given on the size chart. (The one notable exception being the vest I made for Alex for my mom's wedding, which I had to make twice because the first one was too small.) But grown up patterns make clothes smaller than you'd think based on the pattern measurements.
I've pretty much given up using pattern instructions, too. It's scary the instructions they give in the "Qwik and EZ" type of patterns--usually you have to have had considerable sewing experience to figure out what they're talking about, yet the patterns are marketed toward newbie seamstresses.

Sam and Sue: Finished With Pictures!

Alexis decided that ALL of the bugs needed faces, so this was a bit interesting on some of those small little faces, but I made it work! That means I had to add a face to the ladybug, so there are new pictures of her as well.

We just bought my daughter an adorable canopy bed (do you know how hard those are to find???), and I've been searching for a pattern to make the pretty fabric canopy for the top (also hard to find). Somehow, your blog came up in my google search. Being a stitchaholic myself, I've taken way too much time looking at your work, and it's gorgeous! This quilt, with the little buggy faces and the tree and the backside... well, it's all gorgeous. Since we're supposed to pick up my daughter's bed in a few days, I decided to quit with the hand sewing on her new quilt (besides, hand-stitched quilts on kids' beds = bad idea, anyway), and seeing your quilt gave me inspiration for the stitching on hers. So, thanks! It's a lovely quilt. And Alexis is adorable, too!
Posted by: Rayna at July 7, 2006 2:48 PM
I made a "canopy" for Alexis' bed, but it ended up not working because she tried to swing from it! LOL :o)
Thanks! I was very pleased with how this one turned out. I also am a firm believer that anything that is on a kids bed needs to go into the washing machine! This one has already been washed many times and it holds up just great! I like to make baby and toddler quilts that do that. :o)

Sam And Sue: It's Done!

Saturday What Not
Jamison has made us a political widow and orphan today by going over to Towson to attend a political seminar/training session. Alexis is currently watching Monster's Inc. and I'm getting ready to get back to work on her quilt after catching up on email and such. I'm sure he'll have a lot to tell you when he gets home late this afternoon/early this evening! Until then I may post a few things now and then, but I'm hoping to push through on this quilt and make significant progress toward finishing it!
Have a great Saturday everyone! :o)

Sam and Sue: A Ladybug and a Snail
The Sam and Sue quilt is going to kill me! Well maybe not the quilt, but my sewing machine sucks! But I did manage to get the ladybug and the snail done today. They aren't as neat as I would like, but they are still cute and Alexis is over the moon with them!

The bumble bee is also on the quilt and is halfway finished. I'm hoping to get the other bugs on tomorrow and start the rest of the quilting process. At the rate it is going I am hoping to finish it up this weekend! Once the satin stitches are finished (which are what the sewing machine is not liking!) the rest of it will be all downhill! Fingers crossed! :o)

one little girl is going to be so happy with this quilt. you are doing a great job.
Posted by: grams at June 9, 2006 9:39 PM
She's already thrilled with it! She tries to get under it while I'm working on it! I told her it was almost finished and she said "Well hurry!" Not a patient one my daughter! ;o)

I've got to say, I am totally impressed with this quilt! it's just beautiful!

oh, no. What is it doing??
Posted by: katherine at June 9, 2006 5:53 PM
It just doesn't do satin stitch as well as the other machine. Or I guess I should say it doesn't do satin stitch as well as the other machine most of the time. If it's doing the right thing the satin stitch is just as good as old Bertha, if not better! But this is the most persnickety little pain in the butt machine I've ever seen!!

Sue and Sam: The Sunflower!
The sunflower is done! The snail is also cut out and stuck to the quilt, but I haven't gotten him stitched on yet. I've been having too much fun playing with Nelson! I'll work on him and the rest of the bugs this evening or tomorrow.

Sam and Sue: And A Bumble Bee!
Alexis says "And a bumble bee!" for the quilt. I figured out how to get them all on there, but I told her that was it! We're out of room! But then again I told her that before the bumble bee too! She said "OK Mommy, but you have to have a bumble bee or else the other bugs will be lonely!" It's her quilt, who am I to argue? :o)
