So Sad
NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) -- The 5-year-old daughter of Grammy-winning Christian music star Steven Curtis Chapman was struck and killed Wednesday by a sport utility vehicle driven by her brother, authorities said. The girl, Maria Sue, was hit in the driveway of the family's home Wednesday afternoon by a Toyota Land Cruiser driven by her teenage brother, said Laura McPherson, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
The brother, whose name and exact age weren't available, apparently did not see the girl, McPherson said. No charges are expected.
"It looks like a tragic accident," she said.
Several family members witnessed the accident, which happened in Williamson County just south of Nashville. The girl died later at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, hospital spokeswoman Laurie Holloway said.
I've been a huge fan of SCC for years. I'll admit I'm more partial to his earlier stuff, but his voice and enthusiasm are contagious! I saw him live in Baton Rouge years ago and his voice is even fabulous live! Our thoughts go out to Steven Curtis Chapman and his family and especially his son, who has a very long road ahead of him as he deals with the tradgedy.

This Just Breaks My Heart
This just breaks my heart and is becoming an all too often occurrence as of late. I'm tired of these men deciding they don't want their child or they want to get back at their child's mother so they throw them off a bridge or otherwise kill them because they are selfish pricks! I've said it before and I'll say it again most women will gladly, completely remove themselves from your lives. We don't want our children exposed to such selfishness and hate! We'll move on, find a way to support our families and get what needs to be done, done. This just makes me want to scream!

The thing that seems to be in common in stories of this kind--it's not that the parent who kills the children (95% of the cases I've seen it's the male parent, but not always) doesn't want the children, it's that they don't want the other parent to have the children. Like a four-year-old breaking their own toy so they don't have to share it with a sibling. "If I can't have them, you won't be able to either! So there!"
It is so sick and wrong.
Posted by: cjmr at February 6, 2008 5:51 PM
Exactly. I can't imagine using a child as a bargaining chip or with holding them from a mother who loves them. In these guy's minds I think it's a if I can't have them then you can't either and I'm going to make you completely miserable in the process!

Brad Renfro Dead at 25
Actor Brad Renfro has died at age 25, PEOPLE has confirmed.Renfro died Tuesday at a Los Angeles apartment where he spent the night with friends, Craig Harvey, chief investigator for the Los Angeles county coroner, tells PEOPLE.
Renfro was heard snoring overnight, but found not breathing later Tuesday morning, and the friends called 911. Paramedics declared him dead at the scene at about 9 a.m., Harvey says.
A cause of death was not immediately determined, but Renfro had a history of drug problems.
Drug overdose is "obviously it's a possibility considering his history, but right now all we have is the history of his drinking the previous night," Harvey says. "All that we have is that he was last known to be alive during the morning hours and he was snoring."
The actor, who starred in The Client and Apt Pupil, had recently completed a movie with Winona Ryder and Billy Bob Thornton.
Film director Joel Schumacher discovered Renfro at age 12 and cast him in the 1994 John Grisham movie The Client (which also starred Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones). The following year, PEOPLE named the young screen hopeful one of its "Top 30 Under 30." The actor's other credits include Tom and Huck, Ghost World and Deuces Wild.
Brad was starting to make a name for himself as a child actor around the time I was thinking of leaving Knoxville. I actually knew some of his family, though I never met him. This is truly sad. He seemed like such a lost soul.

Truly Sad
RAWALPINDI, Pakistan (CNN) -- Pakistan's former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday after addressing a large gathering of her supporters. The suicide bomb attack also killed at least 22 others, doctors said. It was not immediately clear if Bhutto died from shots fired before the blast, or from wounds caused by bomb shrapnel.
Her body was removed from Rawalpindi General Hospital late Thursday night, about six hours after the assassination.
President Pervez Musharraf held an emergency meeting in the hours after the death, according to state media.
He said the killers were the same extremists that Pakistan is fighting a war against, and announced three days of national mourning.
Video of the scene just moments before the explosion showed Bhutto stepping into a heavily guarded vehicle to leave the rally.
John Moore, a photographer for Getty Images, said he heard at least two gunshots before the bomb was detonated.
Police sources told CNN the bomber, who was riding a motorcycle, blew himself up near Bhutto's vehicle.
Bhutto was rushed to Rawalpindi General Hospital -- less than two miles from the bombing scene -- where doctors pronounced her dead.
Chaos erupted at the hospital when former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif arrived to pay his respects to Bhutto less than three hours after her death.
Hundreds of Bhutto supporters crammed into the entrance shouted and cried, some clutching their heads in pain and shock. Sharif called it "the saddest day" in Pakistan's history. "Something unthinkable has happened," he said.
Tragic, simply horrible news. May she rest in peace.

Deborah Kerr Dies at 86
LONDON, England (AP) -- Deborah Kerr, who shared one of Hollywood's most famous kisses and made her mark with such roles as the correct widow in "The King and I" and the unhappy officer's wife in "From Here to Eternity," has died. She was 86.Kerr, who suffered from Parkinson's disease, died Tuesday in Suffolk in eastern England, her agent, Anne Hutton, said Thursday.
For many she will be remembered best for her kiss with Burt Lancaster as waves crashed over them on a Hawaiian beach in the wartime drama "From Here to Eternity."
Kerr's roles as forceful, sometimes frustrated women pushed the limits of Hollywood's treatment of sex on the screen during the censor-bound 1950s.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominated Kerr a six times for best actress, but never gave her an Academy Award until it presented an honorary Oscar in 1994 for her distinguished career as an "artist of impeccable grace and beauty, a dedicated actress whose motion picture career has always stood for perfection, discipline and elegance."
My favorite role of hers was in An Affair to Remember. Rest in peace Ms. Kerr.

The Last of the Rat Pack Joey Bishop Dies at 89
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Joey Bishop, the stone-faced comedian who found success in nightclubs, television and movies but became most famous as a member of Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack, has died at 89.He was the group's last surviving member. Peter Lawford died in 1984, Sammy Davis Jr. in 1990, Dean Martin in 1995, and Sinatra in 1998.
Bishop died Wednesday night of multiple causes at his home in Newport Beach, publicist and longtime friend Warren Cowan said Thursday.
The Rat Pack -- originally a social group surrounding Humphrey Bogart -- became a show business sensation in the early 1960s, appearing at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas in shows that combined music and comedy in a seemingly chaotic manner.
Reviewers often claimed that Bishop played a minor role, but Sinatra knew otherwise. He termed the comedian "the Hub of the Big Wheel," with Bishop coming up with some of the best one-liners and beginning many jokes with his favorite phrase, "Son of a gun!"

Madeleine McCann's Mother Named as a Suspect
(CNN) -- Police on Friday named Madeleine McCann's mother Kate a suspect in her disappearance, and said the girl's blood was found in a vehicle the family rented 25 days after reporting her disappearance, according to a family spokeswoman.Madeleine McCann's blood was found in a car her parents rented 25 days after they reported her disappearance, Justine McGuiness told CNN.
Kate McCann was seen going into the police headquarters in Portimao, a town in Portugal's Algarve region, on Friday morning.
She was questioned for almost 11 hours the day before, and left looking visibly shaken and drained, according to CNN's Paula Hancocks.
Gerry McCann has also now arrived at the police station for questioning.
Portuguese authorities made no public statement on the latest developments.
Philomena McCann, Madeleine's aunt, said police were suggesting Kate McCann might have accidentally killed her daughter.
"They are suggesting that Kate has in some way accidentally killed Madeleine, then kept her body, then got rid of it," Philomena McCann told Sky News.
This story has really bothered me from the very beginning. How can a story about a missing child not get to you? But the thing that bothered me the most is the parents leaving their children ALONE in a hotel so they could go out and have a nice dinner alone.
Seriously...Who does that??!??!
What goes through your head that makes you think it's ok to leave your children ALONE in a hotel room so you can go out to wine and dine with your spouse? And we're talking small chidren here, not teenagers or anything like that.
Babysitters people! Ask the hotel if they have one or can recommend one and if not then STAY WITH YOUR CHILDREN!!
It's not rocket science.
But now the mother has been charged in the little girl's disappearance. A family spokesperson is saying that it is due to the fact that they want to ask more detailed questions and under Portuguese law that's how you have to do it, but the whole story stinks to me. The piece that just doesn't make sense in the family's story...How is it possible that Madeline's blood was found in a car the family rented 25 days AFTER they had reported her missing. And if the mother did "accidentally" kill her daughter how does that happen exactly? Something stinks to high heaven with this story and to be honest it didn't smell rosy to begin with.

what i think is what was found in the car which was hired 25 days later is fluids/dna from madeline. my simple question is with all that support and sympathy i guess there were more than 20 people willing to drive them around why did they have to hire a car for one day. as the theory suggest they were moving the body from one position to another. lets look at the amount of appeal they launched it might have been to take away attention from them on their guilty. there is no smoke without fire
Posted by: collet at September 8, 2007 1:38 PM
Since I wrote this up yesterday they've named the father as a suspect too. This whole scenario never really had a chance for a happy ending after a few days, but the possible involvement of the parents makes it that much more dire.

Pavarotti Dies
(CNN) -- Famed opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti, who appeared on stage with singers as varied as opera star Dame Joan Sutherland, U2's Bono and Liza Minnelli, died Thursday in Italy after suffering from pancreatic cancer, manager Terri Robson said in a statement. He was 71."The great tenor, Luciano Pavarotti, died today at 5:00 a.m. at his home in Modena, the city of his birth," according to Robson.
"The Maestro fought a long, tough battle against the pancreatic cancer which eventually took his life. In fitting with the approach that characterized his life and work, he remained positive until finally succumbing to the last stages of his illness."
I had hoped when he was released to go home that he would bounce back, but it appears that was not what fate intended. He was truly a lovely opera singer. He will be missed.

Merv Griffin dies at 82
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Merv Griffin, the entertainer turned impresario who parlayed his "Jeopardy" and "Wheel of Fortune" game shows into a multimillion-dollar empire, has died. He was 82.Griffin died of prostate cancer, according to a statement from his family that was released by Marcia Newberger, spokeswoman for The Griffin Group/Merv Griffin Entertainment.

My mom watched Merv's show and I adored him, so I brought him out of the television and into my world. When I read that he wasn't doing well a few days ago it made me sad. When I saw this headline yesterday that he had passed away, the sadness grew.

Heart Breaking
MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (CNN) -- As many as 50 vehicles are trapped in the rubble of an interstate bridge collapse, and officials said Thursday it could take five days or longer to search the wreckage.Minneapolis police Chief Tim Dolan said Thursday bodies were trapped in the rubble.
"We know of several people who were pinned or trapped" that have died, Dolan said.
"There's an individual case where an individual was severely injured and was talking to a medical personnel and was able to say his goodbyes to his family [before] he passed on," Dolan told a news conference.
Oh my god! That just breaks my heart!
The article goes on to say that anywhere from 30-50 cars still remaining in the water and there are bodies trapped. I have a very bad feeling that this death toll is going to rise much higher than the four where it officially stands now.
More prayers and thoughts go out to the people involved.

Holy Cornflakes!
MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (CNN) -- Searchers in Minneapolis combed the Mississippi River Thursday looking for victims of an interstate bridge collapse. Four people were confirmed dead.Officials said at least 62 people were injured in the Wednesday evening rush-hour disaster. Twenty people to 30 people were missing, Minneapolis police Chief Tim Dolan said Thursday, and 30 to 50 cars remain in the river, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner on Thursday morning said the confirmed death toll was four, lower than the seven to nine deaths reported earlier. Officials said Thursday they expected the death toll to rise.
Security camera video showed the Interstate 35W bridge's center section collapsing into the river in less than four seconds. The northern end of the span appeared to drop first and the southern end followed.
CNN obtained the video from a source who asked to remain unidentified because they were not authorized to distribute it publicly.
Gary Babineau was driving his truck across the bridge as it fell.
"I could see the whole bridge as it was going down and as I was falling, and it just gave a rumble real quick, and it all just gave way, and it just fell completely all the way to the ground," Babineau said.
Search operations on the river were halted around nightfall for safety reasons.
A bridge collapsing with people on it! It's actually one of my worst nightmares! The video is horrible!! Can you imagine driving along and the road disappearing beneath you? The whole thing is just a terrifying event! How horrific!
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people who were on the bridge and those that lost loved ones.

I'm up visiting friends in MA right now. On the way up, we sat for 40 minutes on the Tappan Zee Bridge over the Hudson River due to an accident on the bridge. I spent the whole time thinking to myself, "I sure hope nothing happens to this bridge while we're sitting on it. It's a couple hundred foot drop to the river." I am almost bridge-phobic.
I'm glad Jerry is flying up and joining us here Friday, because there is no way I'll be able to force myself to drive over big bridges on the way back after this.

Tammy Faye Messner Dies
(CNN) -- Tammy Faye Messner, the former televangelist and Christian singer who battled drug addiction and later inoperable cancer, died Friday morning, CNN's Larry King said Saturday night. He said the family had asked him to make the delayed announcement. She was 65.
Messner was a guest on "Larry King Live" on Thursday. She told him she couldn't swallow food, and weighed only 65 pounds.
King said the family postponed the death announcement for a day so family members could gather. Messner was cremated and interred in a remote part of Kansas at the Kansas-Oklahoma state line, King said.
"The family appreciates all of the well wishes of so many people," the talk show host said on CNN.
"She wanted a party," King added. "They're going to schedule a party in two to three weeks in Palm Springs, California. Her friends will be invited. And she wanted it to be a celebration.
"She died peacefully. Anyone who saw her on our show this week knew that she didn't have long."
King asked her Thursday if she were "a little scared."
She responded, "A little bit," adding that she mainly worried about her family.
I can't say that I ever kept up with her evangelical career, but I had been keeping up with her cancer battle. Her attitude and spirit were so upbeat and her faith was ever present. She was bright, sunny and full of spunk! I saw her blog messages from time to time since she was diagnosed with terminal cancer and she always seemed to find the light at the end of the tunnel. May she rest in peace, finally escaping the pain of the disease of cancer.

Dead body is pregnant Jessie Marie Davis, official says
CANTON, Ohio (CNN) -- The body recovered Saturday in a northeastern Ohio park is that of Canton resident Jessie Marie Davis, who was pregnant when reported missing more than a week ago, the Summit County Medical Examiner's office said Sunday. In a phone recording, the examiner's office announced it had "positively identified the remains found," adding "fetal remains were also recovered."
The cause of death was pending, the office said.
Davis, 26, had been due to give birth in early July when she disappeared. She was last heard from June 13.
The examiners began the autopsy Sunday after the body was recovered in the area of Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Summit County.
Officials have been tight-lipped about exactly where the body was found and how it was discovered.
On Sunday, a source close to the investigation told CNN that Canton police patrolman Bobby Cutts Jr., 30, led police to the body.

Scientists simulate jet colliding with World Trade Center
A frightening, terrifying look at what happened from the inside out done by scientists from Purdue's Physics department.
NEW YORK (CNN) -- A computer simulation of the September 11, 2001, attack on the World Trade Center, posted on the Web site YouTube by Purdue University researchers, shows how hijacked planes crashed through the twin towers, stripping fireproofing materials from the steel columns and eventually leading to their collapse. The 3-D animation, part of a Purdue study that took two and a half years to complete, will hopefully help engineers design safer buildings, researchers said.
"When the developers of the World Trade Center first designed the complex, they did take into account of an accidental plane crash," said Christoph Hoffman, one of the study's lead researchers. "The only thing they didn't anticipate is the fire. If the crash impacts the water line, then a fire can burn for a long time."

Baby found miles from where pregnant woman vanished
CANTON, Ohio (AP) -- A newborn girl was found in a basket on a doorstep 45 miles from where a pregnant woman vanished, authorities said Tuesday.A DNA sample was taken from the infant and given to authorities investigating the disappearance.
Thomas Maurer, sheriff in neighboring Wayne County, said a doctor determined that the baby was less than 24 hours old. He said he didn't believe the baby was related to the missing woman, Jessie Davis, but that officials were using "every caution we can" to eliminate that possibility.
Davis, 26, who is due July 3 with a baby she planned to name Chloe, has not been heard from since last Wednesday evening when she spoke to her mother by phone.
This whole story is so tragic. From what her son has said in terms of what he might have seen and the fact that she hasn't turned up yet, I have a feeling this story is not going to have a happy ending. I just don't understand why people are drawn to do something so vicious and inhumane. The sad fact of the matter is that she has a son and a daughter on the way. If the baby does turn up then two children are without their mother and if the baby does not then a small boy has lost not only his mother, but his sister as well. How does someone sleep with themselves in terms of killing the mother of two children or for that matter killing a child? It's just sick!

'Tornado of flames' kills nine firefighters
CHARLESTON, South Carolina (AP) -- Fire swept through a furniture warehouse, collapsing the building's roof and claiming the lives of nine firefighters in a disaster the mayor described Tuesday as "difficult to fathom or quantify.""Nine brave, heroic, courageous firefighters of the city of Charleston have perished fighting fire in a most courageous and fearless manner, carrying out their duties," Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Twister kills 9, wipes out Kansas town
(CNN) -- A massive tornado killed at least nine people in southwestern Kansas on Friday night and destroyed nearly everything in its path."My town is gone," Greensburg, Kansas, City Administrator Steve Hewitt said after surveying the wreckage.
"I believe 95 percent of the homes are gone," Hewitt said. "Downtown buildings are gone, my home is gone, and we've got to find a way to make this work and get this town back on its feet."
By Saturday morning, the town was empty and structural engineers and the National Weather Service were assessing damage. Hundreds of residents were taken to shelters in schools and other facilities in nearby towns, the Red Cross said.
A town, completely gone! How utterly heartbreaking! If you've ever been through a tornado, it's something you'll never want to do again. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Greensburg, Kansas.
Now would be a good time to donate a little money to the Red Cross if you can.

Hate Group Coming to Disrupt VA Tech Funerals
The families of those killed in the Virginia Tech massacre may not be able to grieve in peace at the funerals of those they lost. An anti-gay religious group known for protesting at the funerals of American soldiers killed in Iraq is planning on appearing at services for those killed on Monday as well. The Topeka, Kan.-based Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), which is not affiliated with any national Baptist organization, announced plans to protest at victims’ funerals only hours after 32 people were killed in the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. They also may protest at other events on the Virginia Tech campus.
The organization, founded and led by Fred Phelps, believes the United States has condemned itself to destruction by accepting homosexuality and other “sins of the flesh.” Phelps’ daughter, Shirley Phelps-Roper, said the Virginia Tech teachers and students who died on Monday brought their fate upon themselves by not being true Christians.
“The evidence is they were not Christian. God does not do that to his servants,” Phelps-Roper said. “You don’t need to look any further for evidence those people are in hell.”
These people are among the most vile and disgusting people on the planet. It's likely since the rise of the Patriot Guard Riders that they've suffered slim pickings to capitalize on the deaths of the innocent to push their radical agenda. The Patriot Guard Riders have extended their offer of protection to the ROTC students, but they feel their mandate doesn't cover all students that died in the tragedy. Given that they have to protect large number of soldier's funerals as well, you can see how their resources could be stretched thin.

John Edwards Statement
"We are simply heartbroken by the deaths and injuries suffered at Virginia Tech. We know what an unspeakable, life-changing moment this is for these families and how, in this moment, it is hard to feel anything but overwhelming grief, much less the love and support around you. But the love and support is there. We pray that these families, these students, and the entire Virginia Tech community know that they are being embraced by a nation. There is a Methodist hymn that gave us solace in such a moment as this, and we repeat its final verse here, in hopes it will help these families, as it helped us:'In our end is our beginning; in our time, infinity;
In our doubt there is believing, in our life, eternity,
In our death, a resurrection; at the last, a victory,
Unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.'Our dearest wish is that this day could start again, with the promise of these young people alive. Knowing that cannot be, our prayer is for God's grace and whatever measure of peace can be reached on this terrible day."
Very well said Mr. Edwards.

Possibly 30
BLACKSBURG, Va. - A gunman opened fire in a Virginia Tech dorm and then, two hours later, in a classroom across campus Monday, killing at least 30 people in the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history, government officials told The Associated Press. The gunman was killed, bringing the death toll to 31.
Dear God! This is simply heart breaking! Keep the families, the students, the faculty, the campus itself in your thoughts and prayers. As this unfolds it just gets uglier and uglier and I can't even begin to imagine how the pieces will be picked up and put back together. They will need as much love and support as possible.

At least 20 dead in campus shootings
CNN) -- The Virginia Tech police chief said at least 20 people were killed in twin shootings on the Blacksburg campus Monday morning."Some victims were shot in a classroom," Chief Wendell Flinchum said, adding that the gunman was dead.
"Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions," said university President Charles Steger. "The university is shocked and indeed horrified."
The attacks mark the worst school shooting incident since 1999 when Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris killed 12 students and a teacher before killing themselves at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.
A hospital spokeswoman told The Associated Press that 17 Virginia Tech students were being treated for gunshot wounds and other injuries.
Sharon Honaker at the Carilion New River Valley Medical Center told CNN that four patients had been transported there, one in critical condition.
One person was killed and others were wounded at multiple locations inside a dormitory about 7:15 a.m., Flinchum said. Two hours later, another shooting at Norris Hall, the engineering science and mechanics building, resulted in multiple casualties, the university reported.
The first reported shooting occurred at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a co-ed dormitory that houses 895 students. The dormitory, one of the largest residence halls on the 2,600-acre campus, is located near the drill field and stadium.
Amie Steele, editor-in-chief of the campus newspaper, said one of her reporters at the dormitory reported "mass chaos."
Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have lost family and loved ones.

Columnist Molly Ivins Dies
AUSTIN — Molly Ivins, whose biting columns mixed liberal populism with an irreverent Texas wit, died at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at her home in Austin after an up-and-down battle with breast cancer she had waged for seven years. She was 62.Ms. Ivins, the Star-Telegram’s political columnist for nine years ending in 2001, had written for the New York Times, the Dallas Times-Herald and Time magazine and had long been a sought-after pundit on the television talk-show circuit to provide a Texas slant on issues ranging from President Bush’s pedigree to the culture wars rooted in the 1960s.
"She was magical in her writing," said Mike Blackman, a former Star-Telegram executive editor who hired Ms. Ivins at the newspaper’s Austin bureau in 1992, a few months after the Times-Herald ceased publication. "She could turn a phrase in such a way that a pretty hard-hitting point didn’t hurt so bad."
Molly Ivans was a brilliant journalist and author. Her death is truly a great loss. Rest in peace Ms. Ivans. We here at Daffodil Lane are great admirers!
Found via the Star Telegram.
Update: 8:34 pm: CNN is now reporting Molly Ivan's death as well:
The writer, who made a living poking fun at Texas politicians, whether they were in her home base of Austin, Texas, or the White House, revealed in early 2006 that she was being treated for breast cancer for the third time.More than 400 news organizations, including CNN.com, subscribed to her nationally syndicated column, which combined strong liberal views and populist-toned humor. Ivins' illness did not seem to hurt her ability to deliver biting one-liners.
"I'm sorry to say (cancer) can kill you but it doesn't make you a better person," she said in an interview with the San Antonio Express-News in September, the same month cancer claimed her friend, former Gov. Ann Richards.
To Ivins, "liberal" wasn't an insult. "Even I felt sorry for Richard Nixon when he left; there's nothing you can do about being born liberal -- fish gotta swim and hearts gotta bleed," she wrote in a column included in her 1998 collection, "You Got to Dance With Them What Brung You."
In a column in mid-January, Ivins urged readers to stand up against Bush's plan to send more troops to Iraq.
"We are the people who run this country. We are the deciders. And every single day, every single one of us needs to step outside and take some action to help stop this war," Ivins wrote in the January 11 column. "We need people in the streets, banging pots and pans and demanding, 'Stop it, now!"' (Read the column)
Ivins' best-selling books included those she co-authored with Lou Dubose about Bush. One was titled "Shrub: The Short but Happy Political Life of George W. Bush" and another was "BUSHWHACKED: Life in George W. Bush's America."

Putting A Human Face On The Troops In Iraq
This affects us all! This could be you! It's time to put a face on the brave soldiers and what their families go through each and every day.
I believe that my husband will call me tomorrow.Tonight I'll say, "Have a great day," and "I love you" to my husband, who is 11 time zones away in Iraq. Then I'll hang up the phone. I'll fall asleep as I did last night, next to our baby daughter. We'll sleep in the guest bedroom downstairs — it's less lonely to sleep there for now.
First, I'll pet and talk to our dogs. I weaned them from sleeping with me a few months ago, but they still seem a bit disappointed when I go off to bed without them. I'll promise them a long walk tomorrow, and I'll make good.
In bed, I'll lay my hand on our daughter's chest several times before I fall asleep, just to make sure that she is breathing. I'll curl up in two blankets: one from Guatemala, one from Peru. I'll allow these souvenirs of past travels to warm the empty space in the bed. I'll get up three times during the night to feed our baby. Each of those times I'll tell her that she has a beautiful life to look forward to. I can say this because I believe that my husband will call me tomorrow.
In the morning after my cup of coffee, I'll change diapers and move around loads of laundry. I'll pour dog food, eat cereal, get dressed, and do the dishes — all with one hand, holding our baby in the other. I'll do the shopping, pay the bills, and stop in at work to see how my employees are getting by. Every three hours I'll stop what I'm doing to feed, change and play with our daughter. I'll make good on the promised walk with our baby strapped to my chest and a dog-leash in each hand. When people say, "Looks like you have your hands full," I'll smile and acknowledge that it's true, but I make the best of it because I believe that my husband will call me tomorrow.
If there is a letter addressed to me from the military, I'll open it because I believe that my husband will call me tomorrow. If there is a knock at the door, I'll answer it, because I believe that my husband will call me tomorrow.
And when he does, I'll talk to him and tell him again that I love him. I'll be able to hang up the phone, keeping my fear at bay, because I believe — I must believe — that my husband will call me tomorrow.
It's time to bring these brave men and women HOME where they belong! It's time for these men and women to be with their families, not off fighting for something that we never should have gotten involved in in the first place. We've been lied to long enough. We've lost too many brave soldiers. It's time to bring them home NOW!!

Faces Of The Dead
The New York Times has a very poignant interactive "picture" up on their website that lists the names of those killed in Iraq and provides pictures of those they could locate. Given we just passed the 3,000 mark on December 28th (And that doesn't included the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis killed as well) it's important to remember that these are real people, with families and friends, and not nameless, faceless droids half a world away. This affects us all. Take a look and say a prayer for those in harm's way and those who have lost loved ones.

I Had Hoped This Would End Differently
Lost dad found dead in wildernessMERLIN, Oregon (CNN) -- The body of a San Francisco man who had walked into the Oregon wilderness to summon help for his stranded family was found Wednesday in a steep ravine where he had left clues for searchers.
Officials confirmed that James Kim, 35, an editor at the Web site CNET, had been found dead.
Brian Anderson, Undersheriff of Josephine County, broke down and could not finish speaking as he announced that Kim's body was found at 3:03 p.m. ET. (Watch Anderson's emotional reaction Video)
Searchers were attempting to remove Kim's body, and his family members have requested that their privacy be respected, officials said.
Kim walked into the snowy Oregon mountains Saturday to find help for his wife and two young daughters. They were rescued by searchers on Monday.
Clothing and bits of an Oregon map turned up Tuesday in a steep canyon that drains into the Rogue River. Searchers said they believed he was marking his trail for them.
The clothing, which was wet, included two gray sweat shirts, a red T-shirt, a sock and a blue girl's skirt, said Lt. Gregg Hastings of the Oregon State Patrol. Family members said Kim carried the items when he left.
We didn't know them, but I feel like my heart has been punctured none the less. I had so hoped that there would be two happy endings to this story! Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Kim family.

Man jailed for putting puppy in warm oven
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (AP) -- A man who pleaded guilty to putting his wife's puppy in a 200-degree oven, crippling it, was sentenced Monday to six months in jail.Third District Judge William Barrett ordered Marc Christopher Vincent, 36, to serve six months in jail without the chance of early release. He must also pay a $500 fine and $986 in veterinary bills for the dog.
Vincent, 36, pleaded guilty September 18 to one count of misdemeanor aggravated animal cruelty for putting the dog in an oven for five minutes on May 25 during a fight with his wife, Rhonda. She has since filed for divorce.
The black Chihuahua mix named Henry suffered permanent damage to its front paws and now limps.
As part of the plea agreement, a second charge of animal cruelty was dropped. Prosecutors had accused Vincent of turning a leaf blower on the dog in a separate incident, damaging the dog's eye so badly it had to be removed.
Vincent was ordered to serve two years' probation after his jail sentence, seek anger management therapy, have no contact with his wife or any animals, and get a mental health evaluation.
This has to be the biggest WTF headline of the day! What in the world posses someone to put a puppy in an oven or attack them with a leaf blower!!??!? I just don't get people! This guy has serious issues, that will most likely manifest themselves in him harming another human being, if he hasn't already. Sick!

'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin dead
SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Steve Irwin, the TV presenter known as the "Crocodile Hunter," has died after being stung by a stingray in a marine accident off Australia's north coast.Media reports say Irwin was snorkeling at Batt Reef, a part of the Great Barrier Reef about 9 miles (about 15 kilometers) from the town of Port Douglas, when the incident happened on Monday morning.
Irwin, 44, was killed by a stingray barb that pierced his chest, according to Cairns police sources.
Irwin was in the area to film pieces for a show called "Ocean's Deadliest" with Phillippe Cousteau, grandson of Jacques, Irwin's producer and friend John Stainton told CNN's "American Morning." But weather had prevented the crew from doing work for that program, said Stainton, so Irwin decided to do some softer features for a new children's TV show he was doing with his daughter, Bindi.
"He came over the top of a stingray that was buried in the sand, and the barb came up and hit him in the chest," said Stainton.
I can't say this is really a big surprise. This guy took way too many chances with dangerous animals for a man who is the father of two small children! He was a complete yahoo! And when you have children you have to keep that in mind before you go off doing crazy stuff! The part that surprises me is that it was something as innocuous (or for what he usually dealt with anyway) as a sting ray! My heart goes out to his family, especially his two little girls.

Comedian Red Buttons dies in L.A. at 87
LOS ANGELES - Red Buttons, the carrot-topped burlesque comedian who became a top star in early television and then in a dramatic role won the 1957 Oscar as supporting actor in "Sayonara," died Thursday. He was 87.Buttons died of vascular disease at his home in the Century City area of Los Angeles, publicist Warren Cowan said. He had been ill for some time, and was with family members when he died, Cowan said.
With his eager manner and rapid-fire wit, Buttons excelled in every phase of show business, from the Borscht Belt of the 1930s to celebrity roasts in the 1990s.
His greatest achievement came with his "Sayonara" role as Sgt. Joe Kelly, the soldier in the post-World War II occupation forces in Japan whose romance with a Japanese woman (Myoshi Umeki, who also won an Academy Award) ends in tragedy.
Josh Logan, who directed the James Michener story that starred Marlon Brando, was at first hesitant to cast a well-known comedian in such a somber role.
"The tests were so extensive that they could just put scenery around them and release the footage as a feature film," Buttons remarked.
Buttons' Academy Award led to other films, both dramas and comedies. They included "Imitation General," "The Big Circus," "Hatari!" "The Longest Day," "Up From the Beach," "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" "The Poseidon Adventure," "Gable and Lombard" and "Pete's Dragon."
And another legend passes into the beyond. Generations of people laughed with you. Rest in peace Mr. Buttons.

8 bombs on India commuter trains kill 147
BOMBAY, India - Eight bombs hit Bombay's commuter rail network during rush hour Tuesday evening, killing at least 147 people and wounding more than 400 in what authorities called a well-coordinated terrorist attack. There was no immediate claim of responsibility in the bombings, which came in quick succession — a common tactic employed by Kashmiri militants. The blasts came hours after a series of grenade attacks by Islamic extremists killed eight people in the main city of India's part of Kashmir.India's major cities were put on high alert. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called an emergency Cabinet meeting and said that "terrorists" were behind the attacks.
Pakistan, India's rival over the disputed territory of Kashmir, quickly condemned the bombings.
Chaos engulfed the crowded rail network in India's financial capital following the blasts that ripped apart densely packed carriages on trains that police said had either pulled into stations or were traveling between them. Doors and windows were blown off the train cars, and witnesses said body parts were strewn on the ground.
After meeting with his Cabinet, Maharashtra state Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said Tuesday night that the death toll was 147, with another 439 wounded.
Deshmukh, the state's top elected official, also corrected initial reports of seven blasts, saying there had actually been eight, including two at one station.
How horrible! Unfortunately I think it's just a matter of time before this happens in New York or DC or any other city with train service in the US for that matter! It's no longer an issue of if, it's an issue of when.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims.
