Ledger Could Win A Posthumous Oscar Nod

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Jack Nicholson's Joker was a blast. Heath Ledger's Joker is as dark and anarchic a figure as Randle McMurphy in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," the role that brought Nicholson his first Academy Award.

Ledger's performance in the Batman tale "The Dark Knight" is so remarkable that next January 22, the one-year anniversary of his death, he could become just the seventh actor in Oscar history to earn a posthumous nomination.

I have to admit the trailers look extremely dark and Heath looks brilliant. It will be interesting to see how this all turns out.

An Empty Chair For Russert

Today's Meet the Press was a tribute to Tim Russert. They left the moderators chair open in his honor as they remembered his contributions to the show and his life.

"Our issue this sad Sunday morning is remembering and honoring our colleague and friend," Brokaw said.

"He said he was only the temporary custodian," of this program, which he called a national treasure, Brokaw said. "Of course, he was so much more than all that."

Brokaw sat among some of Russert's other colleagues in the front of the show's set, including Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin and political analysts Mary Matalin and James Carville, who is also a CNN contributor.

Apparently NBC's Tim Russert collapsed and died today shortly after doing voice overs for Meet the Press. The early suspicion is that it was a heart attack. He was 58 years old. He is survived by his wife and a son. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Snoop Amuses Me

There used to be a Roscoe's in Oakland that I went to a couple of times when I first moved to the Bay Area. I admit, fried chicken and a good, hot waffle can be really good at any time of the day. BUT, Snoop lives in that place. I won't say it's not good - particularly late at night after being out. But, so far, he's had David Beckham and Larry King in that place and I can't stop laughing.

His appearance on Larry King was a hoot. Bill O'Reilly hates Snoop but, as he's matured, he's turned into a really nice guy and that is what growing up is all about.

I think Bill O'Reilly hates everyone. Snoop seems to have grown up a lot. I've been watching his E! show and he just amuses me. I thought the episode with David Beckham was hilarious! The other night with the ice skating was a hoot too!

The End of an Era

NEW YORK - Food Network is kicking Emeril Lagasse down a notch.

The celebrity chef's "Emeril Live," which has been on the air for 10 years, will cease production Dec. 11, Food Network publicist Carrie Welch told The Associated Press.

"However, Emeril is under contract with Food Network," Welch said Tuesday. "We love him, we support him and look forward to a long partnership with him."

Welch wouldn't comment on Lagasse's contract.

Asked why the show was canceled, she told the AP: "The only reason would be that it hit a ton of television milestones and, you know, all good things come to an end."

I must admit I haven't watched Emeril in the past few years, though I used to quite a bit. It's sad to think that his "Bam!" won't be out there except in reruns.

Merv Griffin dies at 82

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Merv Griffin, the entertainer turned impresario who parlayed his "Jeopardy" and "Wheel of Fortune" game shows into a multimillion-dollar empire, has died. He was 82.

Griffin died of prostate cancer, according to a statement from his family that was released by Marcia Newberger, spokeswoman for The Griffin Group/Merv Griffin Entertainment.

As a child Merv Griffin was my "imaginary" friend. I kid you not! I even made Mom set a place for him at the dinner table, though she insisted that since he was imaginary he could eat imaginary food! ;o)

My mom watched Merv's show and I adored him, so I brought him out of the television and into my world. When I read that he wasn't doing well a few days ago it made me sad. When I saw this headline yesterday that he had passed away, the sadness grew.

Rest in peace Sir. You were a big part of my childhood and I will always remember.

Perhaps She Should Go To Real Rehab This Time

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Five days after being booked in connection with a May drunken driving charge, actress Lindsay Lohan was arrested early Tuesday morning on five charges -- including drunken driving and possession of a controlled substance, Santa Monica police told CNN.

Lindsay Lohan was arrested on charges of drunken driving and possession of a controlled substance.

Police spokeswoman Calisse Lindsey said police got a call at 1:34 a.m. PT that a vehicle was chasing another vehicle in a parking lot in Santa Monica. When officers arrived, they found Lohan driving the vehicle that was chasing the other, the spokeswoman said.

The officers smelled alcohol and administered a field sobriety test, which Lohan failed, Lindsey said.

When taken to the police station, the 21-year-old actress registered 0.12 and 0.13 in blood tests for alcohol levels, the spokeswoman said. In California, the legal limit is 0.08, according to the state's Department of Motor Vehicles.

Officers also found a white powdery substance in Lohan's possession which was determined to be cocaine...

Just a thought, but maybe she should go to a real treatment program instead of Promises this time. I don't see how this ends up anywhere, but with her in jail. The thing that bothers me most is that these young stars, male and female alike, all seem to think nothing of hopping in a car when they are chemically altered. Is it a sense or entitlement they think they are due? Do they think the rules don't apply to them? Is it simply arrogance? Regardless she needs help and hopefully she'll get the help she needs, though if Hollywood's track record is anything to go by she doesn't have much hope.

Yes, What They Said!!

And so it "ends"...

If you watch The Sopranos and haven't seen the last episode don't click on the extended link below!

Spoiler Alert: Spoilers Below The Fold!! Click Only If You've Seen the Finale Or Don't Care To Know What Happens!!

In the end, it was Tony Soprano, Carmela, Meadow, A.J. – and Journey.

HBO's The Sopranos ended its 8-year-run Sunday with the New Jersey gangster very much alive, eating onion rings with his family while "Don't Stop Believin'" played on a restaurant jukebox.

And despite fan predictions, there was no bloodbath, no redemption, no closure – only Brooklyn mob boss Phil Leotardo met a gruesome demise, in a gas station parking lot.

Fans were almost unanimously outraged by the ending. Among the posts on the HBO message boards, Mamamia22 writes: "These characters deserved to go out with a bang and this finale was pathetic." Seconds Bergin77: "There should be some sense of closure and a tying of loose ends. Last night's ending left too many questions unanswered."

What the H - E - Double Hockey Sticks?? Seriously!?!? What is it with show creators and these ambiguous freaking endings? I'm sure David Chase thinks he did the "right" thing, but he is seriously deluded!!

Recently we got sucked into reruns of the show Angel on TNT. I had never watched the show before, but I saw an episode one morning and actually liked it much to my surprise given it was a Buffy spin off and the title character of that show irritates the living day lights out of me! Anyway, after that I added it to TiVo and got Jamison hooked too. All of that to say that Angel ended much like The Sopranos in that you don't know what actually happens to the title character.

There is a reason America "hates" Hollywood...We need definitive endings! If you know that a show is going to end or even think that it might (*cough*cough* Veronica Mars!!) and in the case of Angel and the Sopranos who knew they were going, then freaking END the show! Wrap up the loose ends. If that means killing off the title character then do it, or if it means letting them live that's ok too, but put forth a definitive ending and don't leave it up to speculation! These non-ending did they die or didn't they suck!

I'm sure they are possibly thinking of spinning out a major motion picture or some such nonsense, but seriously a series finale should be FINAL!! Loose ends should be tied up, story lines should intersect and ultimately END. That is the very definition of FINALE! In short Mr. Chase and many other creators like him need to realize that the reason your show is on the air is because of the fans, loyal fans, and in the case of Mr. Chase and the Sopranos fans who waited somewhat patiently between large gaps in between seasons only to tune back in and watch once again. You owe those fans some closure, not this sloppy, almost half thought ending that appeared to take you five minutes to scribble down on the back of some bar napkin while you knocked back one too many drinks. It's simply unacceptable.

Tom Poston Dead at 85

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Tom Poston, the tall, pasty-faced comic who found fame and fortune playing a clueless everyman on such hit television shows as "Newhart" and "Mork and Mindy," has died. He was 85.

Poston, who was married to Suzanne Pleshette of "The Bob Newhart Show," died Monday night at home after a brief illness, a family representative, Tanner Gibson, said Tuesday. The nature of his illness was not disclosed.

Amazon's Unbox??

I sat down at Dianne's computer yesterday for some reason that I can not recall and she had Trent's Pink is the New Blog up on the screen. I forget what gossip was on the screen, but there was an Amazon advertisement about renting movies for the TiVo. Now one thing I'm always interested in is new ways to utilize my TiVo. I guess I should have started with the TiVo version of the Unbox icon.

Now I'm excited to finally have a feature that I've thought I should have had from the start, but I wanted it to be from NetFlix and not from Amazon. In fact it's been two years since they said they were about to release the NetFlix download option. If TiVo had to pick a partner Amazon is definitely the better choice, because of pure financial power and given that they are trapped between a rock and hard place, it's really the only way to save their business.

I guess I should have started with an overview of the service. Basically you have two choices, you can rent a movie for 2 to 3 bucks and download it to your TiVo or your computer to watch with their proprietary viewing software. You have 30 days to watch the movie or 24 hours after you start watching the movie before it is deleted or you can choose to delete it yourself. The other option is to buy a movie and download it to your TiVo or your computer. The good thing about this choice is that Amazon keeps up with the fact that you own it so you can delete it whenever you need the space and download it to watch again whenever you have the urge. The bad part about this option is that they charge you about 15 dollars a movie. Given that they have very little of the overhead of a DVD you purchase at the store, it's hard to imagine paying this much for a movie, but I guess if you never had to worry about the DVD again and it guaranteed that you would have the HD version later on without any additional cost, I could see it, but there is no indication that is what you're getting for that extravagant price. It also has a feature where you go onto Amazon's website, do a one click purchase which will send it automatically either to your computer or your TiVo, even if that's not the computer you're on, which I don't know how that would work for your computer, but I can already do that with shows scheduled remotely to my TiVo.

So now as you've probably already figured out I'm divided on the service. The video rental fees are way too high for my taste. I'm used to getting two or three times as many movies for the price they want to charge me. Secondly the restrictions on the amount of time you can keep a movie are way too draconian. Alexis sometimes watches a rented kids movie several times before we send it back. So needless to say I'm completely unimpressed with their offering on the rental side. In fact I think they need to take that aspect back to the drawing board. If you are a Blockbuster customer unaware of the Internet, well let's be honest, you probably wouldn't use this service, but if for some reason you were slightly web savvy you would already be a better plan and a three dollar rental fee with so many restrictions would look like the joke that it is.

On the movie purchasing front the price is just too high, but I can see more of the merits of the system there. There are several movies that we've had to rebuy because Alexis tends to be rough on them if by chance she gets a hold of them, so the merits of actually having a virtual copy that I can download is extremely appealing. The problem I have to worry about is the bandwidth required. We all know the listed speeds of Internet connectivity are not real world values...They are dream values for a network that lives in a single room. In the real world those numbers are never even approximated by a computer network. So that doubles all the download times listed and then we don't know how popular this service will be in the future, so there might be server side restrictions that slow you down even more. They also mentioned in the FAQ that you can't start watching a show downloaded to the TiVo until it's completely downloaded, which is not my experience with TiVo, but assuming that's true it would be an extremely long wait for say a Blue's Clues episode for an unhappy child. Currently it takes 2 minutes for every 1 minute of a programs listed length to transfer a show with my current network. So a two hour movie would take four hours to transfer on my internal network. Of course my TiVo's are all using class B WiFi because the class G WiFi was not yet supported when I bought the boxes. Now they will sell me the WiFi-G for my TiVo and if I were to try this service I would almost think I would need it.

So where does that leave me? Well Amazon is offering $15 dollar gift certificate for people that sign up their TiVo (class 2 or 3, this is all restricted to them and no DirectTV either) before April 30th. I may give it a try, just to see how long the download times are for comparison purposes. Anyone out in world given this a try yet?

I've got to say, I'm totally intrigued. One day we had dozens of people come into the library asking for this and we didn't have it anywhere! Apparently the author was on Oprah that day..We finally did order it for the library and I can't wait to watch it!

I didn't realize she had been on Oprah. I saw the book on Sunday at BJ's and showed it to Jamison. We decided to get it and I read it Sunday afternoon. I then ordered the movie. The concept is very powerful, but it's also pretty straight forward and common sense as well. Basically you control your own destiny and negative thoughts only bring you negative things. It's one of those, "Oh yeah!" moments.

BSG: Season # 3

Have Battlestar Galactica taping on TiVo, and honestly don't really even care if I watch it. Is it just me, or have they destroyed that show this season. I suspect because they're preparing for the spin-off, and as they always do, they steal the good writers, or make them work double-time, but the thing has become one big, long, boring, overwrought soap opera. Best damn show on TV, and they've gone and ruined it. Again, just me?

UPDATE: Just watched tonight's episode. There's an hour of my life I'll never get back. I actually fast-forwarded through part of it, it was that bad.

I thought it was just me! I've found myself more and more fast forwarding through the long drawn out boring parts to find something interesting in BSG lately. Honestly, does anyone really have more than a remote passing interest in the stories of the love lives of the people on the ship? This is Science Fiction, no body cares at all. It's not important to the storyline in any shape, form or fashion. I really don't understand why people just can't use the Babylon 5 model for Sci-Fi shows, lay out the entire plot and execute it from day one. Of course I hated the last season of that show, more for the fact that yet again humanity left lose ends that would doom us for the rest of time sort of thing. I know it always happens that way, but it's freaking fantasy not every ending has to look like the Republican party's Iraq war "victory".

Earthstorm

Let me say first that I usually give the Sci-Fi channel a wide berth on what they show, because they have limited budgets to work with and sometimes they have to cut serious corners to make their TV specials. But somethings you just don't have the ability to take liberties with because they are such glaring errors the average 3rd grader is inspired to call you on it. Take this Earthstorm show, perfectly fine Sci-Fi channel fare. Earth is about to be destroyed by pieces of the moon. A dsperate shuttle mission ensues to try and mitigate the damage on the moon and save the planet from imminent destruction. All fine for a Sci-Fi channel plot, broken moon graphics very cool looking, very realistic. So you've got all the things in place for your story.

Now let's discuss the problems. You launch the shuttle in a hurricane. What?? NASA has a 45 mph wind cut off actually since it takes two days to move a shuttle to the pad from the VAB at maximum speed. And they made this move during a hurricane? Hmmmm...a little weak. Let's assume the best that it was sitting on the pad already waiting to launch. They'd still have to load the payload of nuclear bombs into the cargo bay before launch during a hurricane. So assume now that the shuttle was at the most optimized angle of hurricane force winds that it just didn't fall off the launch pad waiting to launch. Launching the shuttle causes it to sway because the engine force is being held back by the launch pad itself waiting for launch, but assuming that the sway occur in a moment of prefect timing with a few second lull at that point in space and time.

So we are launched into space. The part that totally annoys me is the repeat of the footage where the shuttle discharges both the external fuel tank and the booster rockets at the same time. This never happens. Booster rockets expire first and are released and fall back to the Earth to be reused. A few minutes later at an extremely high altitude the external fuel tank is released. Now this piece of information is also critical for another reason. The Shuttle's main engines (the three that are shown running the entire movie) consume fuel at the rate of a swimming pool per second (17,592 gal/min). Which is why they need to external tank. So ask yourself how do you fly to the moon using the main engines when you have no fuel tank to feed them? The nuclear pulse engines make sense as an engine choice. We've only tested nuclear thermal engine, but you run into the carrying along the fuel for power. But those should have been the only engines running, but then we have the problem in the storyline that they ended up with. They needed more fissile materials so had to dump the engines. But they were able to fly home no problem with the Shuttle's main engines. Just doesn't work.

After all that I like the shuttle footage that they used. I believe they are lifted from Armageddon. I love the metallic thermal-protected panels that they used. These are lifted straight from the SSTO program, but once again if I were running a secret government space program, I wouldn't waste a lot of time not developing the SSTO program, but I've lectured on the SSTO notion ad nauseam, so just read it from the past.

Buzz around the blogoshpere is that Britney Spears has checked herself into rehab. If she has I think it's the best thing she could have done. She has gotten way out of control! She needs to get her ducks in a row so she can take care of her children.

Oscar Nominees Announced

You can read the entire list of nominees here, but I'd like to point out two that I was very thrilled with:

Jennifer Hudson in "Dreamgirls" for Supporting Actress

and

"An Inconvenient Truth" for Best Documentary Feature.

"An Inconvenient Truth" also got the nod for Best Original Song for "I Need to Wake Up" from "An Inconvenient Truth" by Melissa Etheridge. It's a beautiful song if you've never heard it, then pop over to iTunes and give it a listen!

Congrats!

Catch and Release

It's no secret we here at Daffodil Lane are big Kevin Smith fans and it's going to be interesting to see him in a movie he didn't write or direct. He looks HILARIOUS in the trailer! This is definitely a must see!

The Celestine Prophecy

If you have read the book the Celestine Prophecy you should check out the movie version that is also written by James Redfield! It's very good.

And if you haven't read the book you should do that:

It's very uplifting and enlightening.

On Why Dr. Who Sucks And Why I Am No Longer A Viewer

Click on the extended entry below to see my rant since Jamison says I shouldn't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen the end of Dr. Who, Series Two yet.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know how the whole Dr. Who spiel works. You have a doctor that changes and companions that move in and out, but I am NOT happy with this whole Rose thing! So last season when Dr. Who changed I tried to take it with a grain of salt since the Doctor is the Doctor so to speak and even though I liked the first Doctor (for me) the new Dr. Who slowly grew on me.

But Rose? Really? Did you have to go and get rid of her? I didn't see that one coming at all! After the fact I see online that she was supposed to leave and possibly even chose to leave, but come on! You can't get people emotionally attached to a person or people, and by default a relationship between two people and then rip it away! And yes they left open a loophole so that Rose could possibly come back at a later point, but I don't think I'm going to go forward from here.

Entertainment is supposed to be about escapism and I personally can't invest that much emotional energy into characters only to have them ripped away. Life sucks and I don't want my entertainment to be life like. So for now I'm done with Doctor Who. That's the final straw for me. If there is no Rose with the Doctor I'm not interested and it's as simple as that.

Clerks II

We just got finished watching Clerks II and let me tell you it's hilarious! I'll admit the original Clerks is by far not even close to my favorite Kevin Smith movie (That would be Dogma, closely followed by Jersey Girl), in fact it ranks dead last, but this one is great! If you haven't seen it and you enjoy Kevin Smith's humor then by all means check it out. But for those of you who don't like off color slightly dirty humor then I advise you just move along.

Why debut in July???

cjmr points out: Friday the 13th.

Posted by: reno at November 24, 2006 7:38 PM

I hadn't thought about why it was coming out in July. I just assumed that that is when it would be done since they are still shooting scene retakes and such. I guess it would be cool to open on Friday the 13th though.

The Da Vinci Code

Great book and a great movie as well. Once again Tom Hanks impresses me as an actor. In the end I was left feeling they had really done a lot of hacking of the real face of the Opus Dei, which was pretty close to acturately portrayed in the book. If you haven't picked up the book make sure that you at least catch the movie.

Fast Food Nation

I had seen the book cover in passing, it's pretty hard to miss with it's French fry cover, but I never actually read the book itself. Jamison's mom mentioned the movie last weekend and I hadn't heard anything about it, but since then I've seen things about it everywhere!

The fact that fast food is bad for you is no secret. And we all (or most of us anyway) do eat it from time to time, some more than others. We here at Daffodil Lane average once every week or so. When Jamison and I first met that number was much greater and as time passes it's slowly diminishing, because quite frankly fast food sucks!! If I'm going to spend money on food I want something that at least tastes decent, but that's a rant for another time.

In short just because something is "easy" doesn't make it good. This movie is being lauded as a smack in your face in terms of what is actually in your fast food, as if we didn't get enough of a smack with Super Size Me! The thing to remember is these companies don't care if your healthy or not, all they care about is the almighty dollar!

Anyway, it looks to be interesting. Go see it!

i hate to admit it, for the sake of convenience on the road to somewhere fast in 60 seconds, we eat fast food, once or twice a week.

Posted by: gorillabuns at November 17, 2006 9:42 AM

We do every other week or so. It used to be more often, but after I saw Super Size Me and having struggled with my weight all my life I wanted to make sure Alexis didn't have that issue. It is so easy just to pop in and pick something up. That's what is so horrible about the whole thing. They make it too easy to give in to the temptation.

Posted by: Dianne at November 17, 2006 12:32 PM

just saw the movie version of Fast Food Nation, it's an impactful flick to say the least... earlier today i passed up a sausage mcmuffin because of it. Evidently it is worth passing up fast food for more than health reasons.

Yeah Right!

LOS ANGELES - A day after Britney Spears filed divorce papers, Kevin Federline counter-filed court papers Wednesday seeking sole custody of the couple's two children.

The former backup dancer and aspiring rapper is also seeking spousal support. He says the couple's community assets are "uncertain," though Spears said in her divorce papers there were none to speak of, suggesting the two had a prenuptial agreement in place.

No court in their right mind is going to give FedEx (Formerly known as KFed) Loser Extraordinaire custody of a potato, let alone two young children! He's just trying to get more money out of Britney, because he's a dead beat loser! Britney's not the sharpest tack in the box, but she was smart enough (or her people were anyway) to at least get a prenup and though she's made some very public mistakes in terms of raising her first son, haven't we all made a mistake at one point or another? Her heart is in the right place, and despite being a little "country" (her choice of words, not mine) she appears to adore her children. This is most likely her first experience with children period given she was taking the pop world by storm when most of us were babysitting. She's gotten her ducks in a row and as I mentioned above no court in their right mind is giving FedEx anything, especially two children!

So Britney, welcome back to the light! I just have one question for you...What the hell were you thinking??

Kevin as custodial parent? Puleese! He isn't taking care of the kids from his first "relationship". I guess he thinks that since he probably won't ever be gainfully employed, he can just stay home and raise babies. But if he abandoned the first two, why should he get custody of these?

Posted by: Qusan at November 9, 2006 11:00 AM

I think it all boils down to him trying to make more money. His "album" is a failure and he wants to keep living the big life.

Plus there is buzz that right before this went down he wents nuts at their house and tore up some furniture and threw some things around. I think she decided it wasn't worth risking him snapping and hurting her or the kids.

I also think he's pissed that she didn't tell him she was filing for divorce before she did it. She just sort of blasted him with it and I think he's trying to make her pay.

Now For Something A Little Unpolitical

Above you is the video of K-Ked's last moments as a happily married man. During his appearance on Much on Demand, where he was guest hosting and telling the world that Britney "believes in what he's doing" and that she's his "#1 fan," K-Fed received a text message informing him that his punk ass was getting divorced. Just like it was with her career, Britney Spears' timing was impeccable. I've never been burned alive and had my ashes launched into outer space then sucked through a black hole, but I imagine that's how K-Fed feels at this very moment. K-Fed had no idea. One minute he's sipping Cristal in the VIP room, the next he's renting a booth at the swap meet to pay for his legal fees.

I guess that's one way to do it! I will bet you anything there was some sort of fear of domestic abuse for her to do this behind his back and surround herself with several large body guards directly after. I for one never figured out what she saw in him in the first place! As my friend Joanne would say he's a dirt nuget! She better off without him and his kids are too!

Studio 60 Probably On The Chopping Block

I hate to see this. Apparently this show is widely panned as not good, but I don't see that as the case. Jamison and I have really enjoyed it so far. Sadly I think too many people are looking at it for things that it should never be. And regardless of what people are saying the acting is superb. I'm especially impressed with Matthew Perry. He shines.

So if you haven't seen it yet check out Studio 60. And if you have seen it, then watch with an open mind and give it another chance.

Olbermann Up 67% In October

NEW YORK -- Things are looking up at MSNBC, with the channel registering double-digit gains in viewers and adults 25-54 for October while Fox News Channel led all news networks for the 250th straight week.

Leading the charge was "Countdown With Keith Olbermann," which jumped 67% in viewership and 61% in the adults 25-54 demographic compared with October 2005. "Countdown" averaged 637,000 viewers (including 233,000 in the demo) for the month, according to data released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research. It's nowhere near "The O'Reilly Factor" (which led all of cable with 2.1 million viewers) but it beat CNN's "Paula Zahn Now" in the demo and narrowly missed tying it in viewership.

"Keith Olbermann is the right person at the right time, and doing it in the right way," MSNBC general manager Dan Abrams said.

Well done Mr. Olbermann! Well done! Keep speaking the truth, we're listening. We here at Daffodil Lane salute you.
