Oh How I Jinx Myself

Earlier when I mentioned Alexis would be in bed by 6 and I would be happily writing away I clearly jinxed myself. Here we are at almost 6:30 and my darling little girl is lying in the middle of the bathroom floor refusing to take her "purple medicine" (Dimetapp) which her runny little nose desperately needs. She has lost her bed time story and she is rapidly sliding into no songs in the rocking chair and straight to bed instead, but she refuses to take her medicine.

Up until last week Alexis was a perfect medicine taker. You'd give it to her, she'd take it, it was done in less than 20 seconds, but for some reason last week she decided she didn't want to take it and she nearly gagged herself in protest. This evening she has continued down this same path. She cries until she can hardly breathe and flat out refuses to let any of the liquid pass her lips, her snotty little nose getting snottier with evey cry.

As I type this I glance into the bathroom to find her lying on her stomach in the middle of the bathroom floor. I am not 100% sure, but I think my little screamer has fallen asleep. Can you tell she doesn't feel well? For those of you that know Alexis well, you know that she's not a fall asleep anywhere but her bed kind of kid. Her revolving cold has been bothering her for a couple of weeks, but it's nice to see her inner drama queen hasn't been squashed.

I think it's going to be a long night...

Update: 6:42 pm: Yep, she's asleep in the middle of the bathroom floor. If you have a Flickr invite hop on over to see her in all her glory. :o)

Update: 7:15 pm: Alexis woke up 15 minutes ago crying and remembered she still hadn't taken her medicine and proceeded to cry some more. I sat down in the bathroom floor with her, but that didn't help. Finally I just gave up and put her in bed without medicine, which I'm sure will come back and bite me later. She's currently asleep, but still whimpering.

I'll have to check that out. I've never seen those before.

I finally got her to take some by putting in in a doser syringe and puttin a littlt bit in her mouth at a time. Surprisingly she didn't put up much of a fight.

Writing Again

The week or so I've been bitten again by the writing bug! For a long time I just wasn't inspired to write much of anything and subsequently did not, but that changed while I was under the weather. I started having all sorts of ideas for different stories! I even wrote another scene for my children's novel in a notebook I carry around when I was waiting for my friend Jennifer the other day for lunch. I need to get that on to the computer with the rest of that story, but the writing is there! I'm very excited!

This evening Jamison is at another political meeting. Alexis didn't have a nap so it will be an early night for her. She'll be in bed by 6 pm given she's drooping massively as we speak and then I plan to jump back into the writing pool! I can't tell you how exciting this is for me. :O) Now if I could just finish a story...

QOTD: Pseudonym or Not?

I haven't actually written anything in ages! I had a schedule to write and just didn't follow it, but lately I've had the bug again! And this morning Alexis is playing in her sandbox and I'm outside on my swing with laptop in tow planning to start writing as soon as I post this blog entry.

Wanting to write again of course made me start thinking about publishing, which in turn lead me to the Question of the Day:

If you were to have a book published would you use your real name or go with a pseudonym?

Answer away...I'm interested to see what the consensus might be! :o)

Tough question!! Pseudonym gives you privacy and tackle tough topics. But using your real name gives you the ability to use the power of name in your day to day encounters. Mind you if the book is unknown it doesn't help you at all, but if it does become known it can help smooth out the personality conflicts with people. I'm a hermit, so privacy is always my choice.

I'd say go with a pseudonym. You can always put both names on your business cards. But I'm a privacy freak, too.

Up Late

Last night I got on a writing streak and I ended up staying up WAY too late! When I turned off my computer it was around 1:30 am. Luckily Alexis cooperated and slept through the night and she didn't wake up until around 7:30 this morning. And she woke up in a very good mood. She woke up singing and she's being a joy this morning! I'm hoping to get more work done when she takes a nap, plus I need to write up Environmental Wednesday. We'll see how the day goes. Have a great one everyone!

Writing Space

I spent the better part of the morning, up until lunch time, rearranging the living room. I wanted to move the desk my grandfather made into our "breakfast nook" (really it's such a small space I hesitate calling it that, but I guess that is its name) so that I could write with some natural light and be able to look out the window. My desk upstairs is next to the window in our bedroom, but I feel exposed there. It faces the street and every time I open the curtains I feel like I am being stared at, so I decided that will be my night time writing space, when I wouldn't have the curtains open anyway and my new daytime writing space is next to the French doors leading out to our deck. I also moved the couch in the living room and I must say, other than the fact that you can tell how dirty our carpet is from where the couch was sitting, I really like the set up. The room looks so much larger!

I spent Alexis' entire "nap" writing. (She laid upstairs and sang Wild, Wild West from Elmo's Wild, Wild West and I Know You from Sleeping Beauty instead of napping, thus the quotes.) I like my desk here. When I come to a pausing point I can look outside over the yard and my garden and think. It's going to work out very nicely I think. Now we'll just have to see what Jamison thinks about the new arrangement when he gets home. :o)

It's Done

I just submitted the Prologue of my children's novel to Indigo Leaf Magazine and I must say that I have a strange feeling of relief, mixed with complete vulnerability. While I think the story is fantastic and I am extremely excited about it, they might not be...they might think it sucks in massive proportions! Oh the joys of being a writer, but if you don't put yourself out there nothing will ever happen. That's what I just have to keep telling myself over and over again. Now if I can just convince this heavy weight in the pit of my stomach to go away...that would be something!

You only fail if you quit trying! I am thinking great things are going to come your way!

I know how you feel. I felt the same way when I submitted some of my artwork for a competition. But don't worry. Like Cindy said you only fail if you stop trying. I'm sure they'll love it.

I'm in awe that you are finding time to do it. I seem to never have any time for writing anymore. I get a few poems out here and there, but I've never put to paper the 3 novels that keep running round in my head. Maybe one day.

Good for you! Good luck!

Time for Writing

They say in order to finish a novel you have to make time to write and not just wait until the fancy strikes you, so I've bitten the bullet and have made out a schedule. I hope to have the novel finished by early March at the latest for editing and we will be publishing the book in late March/early April via BookSurge Publishing. I know this is an ambitious plan, but I'm nothing if not ambitious. I will keep you posted and I expect each of you to buy at least one copy! ;o)

Have a great day everyone!

I think scheduled-writing is a brilliant idea, I have just finished (on the 31st of December) my book that I planned to finish before X-mas I was one week behind my schedule, but that planning thing kept me going! Good luck with your book! I don't mind buying a copy as long as I can get your book in the UK. Ambitions make the dreams come true!

Posted by: carra at January 3, 2006 10:49 AM

Welcome Carra!

The book will be available worldwide. It's a children's novel. :o)

Posted by: Dianne at January 3, 2006 11:53 AM

Cool! I didn't know about book surge. I will definately be buying a copy :)
